I like it. There may be some needless wankery in there but it is loads (pun not intended) better than St. Anger.

Sounds like some kind of weird cross betwee the Load albums and Justice.

Happy with it on first listen.

The riffs are boring, the lyrics are boring, the vocals are half-assed, and there are no hooks.

Maybe they should hire Timbaland, I hear he's always good at producing good catchy songs..... :D

I dont think its that bad.....I mean after St Anger, having a shit on your own Gran is a step forward.....

It wouldn't be too big of a stretch. They did use Rick Rubin for this, the guy who produced more 80s rap records than anyone.

    Wow.
Beavis: All my friends are brown and red? What does that mean?
Butthead: It means that his friends are like turds and that they like suck.
Beavis: Heh heh. Oh yeah. Yeah! Get those spoons out of my face before I shove them up your butt!
    Butthead: Huh huh.

Come on now, be fair. Rick Rubin and Timbaland are nothing alike. Also, Rick didn't produce SO many rap records...just a handful of extremely important ones, again separating him from Timbaland.

    Basically my thoughts.

Of course it's a more enjoyable listen than St Anger but really, it's a generic and lifeless retread of AJFA. Even the "thrash" section, while fast, sounds like James practising in the studio to a metronome.

The only absolutely positive thing I can say is that the leads are better than those on the Black album because there's no fucking wah on every note.

Everyone whinged that they wanted old Metallica back, that they stopped being good after the eightes and thats what they're getting.
I'm not saying you did by the way Jeremy, just stating what the feedback has been like from the fans regarding their material for the past umpteen years, now there is gonna be so many whinging that they sound dated.

I really like that. And thats coming someone who would have to say that St Anger was the biggest piece of cack thats ever hit my eardrums. Sounds like a return to some sort of form to me. Still not sure about the drum sound though

I'm on board here. The tune rips!

I was quite a doubter as well and I really don't care for the band. I like what they've done here.

one problem - did they auto-tune Hetfields voice in some places? I think they did

Would just like to say that Masters of Reality's s/t is one of the best albums out there, not just on this list but out there in general, being really getting intop the music of Chris Goss lately and this album kicks some serious backside.:)

The new Metallica song is rocking, I'm digging it, not as much as the Noisettes album I'm listening to as I type, but on the strength of that one song the album is already better than St Anger.

  • Finally had a chance to listen...I'm really into it. Once all the instruments get going in the intro it has a similar feel to the original Unforgiven with vocals that are reminiscent of the Load era. And then then there are clear elements of Justice creeping in...leading to that Kill/Ride/Masters thrash section at the 5-minute mark, leading back into Justice era drums and a kick-ass Kirk solo!

All in all, it's sort of like a career retrospective, taking only the best parts from each era. Although, like others have said, Lars' kit sounds very odd (specifically at the very start - I guess it really does draw from ALL parts of their career, lol).

Wow...that sort of sucked. I'm not disappointed because I had ZERO expectations for the album but I wasn't impressed.

The first half sound like Nickelback.

Finally when they kick it in to full gear, the riffs sound dated and tired. Compared to other good metal bands out today..see MASTODON...this just sounds ameturish.

However, it was good to hear Kirk solo again, but the solo isn't even memorable or has a great hook.

Also, this was one of the worst drumming performances I've heard Lars do in a long time (his kit still sounds horrible!).

well ur head is def in ur ass

Lars Ulrich fucking sucks man. He drags the whole fucking thing down. The fact that his drums sound like shit doesn't help either.

However, I must say, that was pretty cool. Very reminiscent of the Kill 'Em All days. Glad to hear some nice solos, too. This song alone puts all of St. Anger to shame.
