sorry all i didn't like the song. maybe i need to hear it again properly . ed seemed like he was straining with his vocals. cigarettes and wine will do that to you. hopefully this was an exception to what are usually great performances. the review in the toronto sun was the song was a stinker.0

I must have no musical taste whatsoever though soulsinging since I iked the song, and I love Comatose. Big Wave I could do without though....maybe there is hope for me after all.
That's about right. A good chunk of the fanbase is still onboard and they are going to love this song because they love this style. Personally, I hate the style. If you're big on punk, you'll love PJ these days. I'm not. Nothing wrong with either side, and I'm allowed to hang around and keep hoping I'll hear them get back to what I consider their strengths... strong baritone vocals, soulful solos, and a great funky rhythm section.
From Vitalogy to Yield they managed to experiment and push themselves while still capitalizing on their strengths I thought... they combined that guitar crunch with great grooves for songs like Tremor Christ and In My Tree. I don't think they do that anymore. There's nothing new about this song, it's just another fast, short, punky riff-rocker. I can live with them, but there are more and more of them every album and they're pretty well throwaways. Used to be one per album (stbc, hail hail, brain of j)... now there are 3-4-5 each album and they're complete filler to my mind. If you've liked those songs off the last few albums, you'll love this. But personally, I hate those songs (and I think the fact that most of them disappear from the setlists permanently without notice is a solid demonstration that they don't have much lasting power). We've had fan campaigns for Breath, Leash, Deep... I rather doubt you'd ever see such a campaign for this song, or for Gods' Dice, or for Big Wave.
The most memorable moments of the last few albums have all been the slow burners... songs like In Hiding, Of the Girl, NAIS, All or None. I feel they're at their strongest when they use that dynamic tension they do so well and take their time to let a song breathe and build. Some people get bored by that and want all songs sharp, short, and rocking with no jams. I'm not of that latter persuasion. Give me an epic Inside Job or a mind-blowing outro to Immortality or Present Tense or a great groove-based breakdown in Even Flow. Take your short little thrash numbers and hand them off to Good CharlottePost edited by soulsinging on0 -
Did someone really say that this song didn't have 1/1000th the groove and soul of anything KoL has done? Really? No,no...Really?
Wow...get off Caleb's cock or actually stay on it. KoL is a joke and their sex is on fire HAHAHAHAHAHA. What a shit song that is.0 -

My wife and I were talking about this, we think that is the 7" single for that song and not the actual album art. it has 7 letters at the top and the name of the song is 7 letters.{if (work != 0) {

As much as I SO dont want to agree with what Soulsinging says, I have to agree with his assessment. Granted his assessment (and everyone's else's) is based off one solitary performance of one song. Within that context however-- and it could be a function of the bad sound and/or bad vocal night for Ed -- it was disappointing. Still my favorite band but I agree with Soulsinging...most especially his impression of the word-spitting/growling/indecipherable lyrics style which I guess some are passing off for a punkish-style with rock influence ...or vice versa. That is a lot of what I didnt like about Riot Act (at least the indecipeherable/mumbling of lyrics part). I hope vocals last night (if not due to technical issues) was not an intentional style thing ala word-spitting/grumbling...
Maybe the studio album will be nothing like my impression. I just think of Not For You on SNL or even Life Wasted on Letterman in 2006 and this was on the other end of the spectrum for me.
PJ without a pronounced vocal contribution from the true original himself would not be 100% PJ to me--regardless of the song type (ballad, punk, etc) . Whether Last Exit, Red Mosiquito, Untitled/MFC they all possess that ---despite somewhat different song style, genre, tempo, etc.
Will be flying to Toronto in August with bells on so not a hater...I hope we can chalk this up to bad sound and/or (unintentional) bad vocals0 -

I actually tend to agree with that assessment, although i still enjoyed the hell out of the new song, especially the mp3 version. but that being said, when have the slow-burners ever been the songs used to promote new albums? the most popular songs on most of the albums have been my least favorites for whatever reason, so if that trend continues here, the new album should be great."Ah, life is a gate, a way, a path to Paradise anyway, why not live for fun and joy and love or some sort of girl by a fireside, why not go to your desire and LAUGH..."0 -

And I would agree if this were 10 years ago, when these short tunes were one, maybe two tracks on an album loaded with great album tracks for fans to discover. But more and more, there are 4-5 of these short tracks to only 1 or 2 of those great buried album songs, so you end up with an album with a lot of repetitive punkish filler and a few highlights in between. It's a bummer.0 -
better than most of the stuff off their last one (with the exception of maybe severed hand).
i actually liked riot act better than their last one as it was more original to me......

That's another good point. PJ has hands down one of the best rock vocalists EVER. Why do they insist by squandering it with all these songs where he's reduced to doing little more than rapping essentially? Seriously, listen to the delivery. He's not singing, he's basically just speaking rhythmically twice as fast as some girl from The Hills, and throwing in a few growls or shouts to make it sound like it's rock singing. This is the guy that can silence a room with the power of his voice in songs like Black, or even All or None... why is he not singing!? Even in the earlier punk rockers... Brain of J, STBC, Last Exit... they managed to let Ed show of his voice a bit and get some real singing in around a fast, punchy riff rocker. That's fallen by the wayside lately :(0 -
Sound was terrible, Ed didn't sound good either. He struggled through the whole thing. From what I can tell though, I loved the song and can't wait to hear a studio version of it.
More importantly:
Does anybody else find it UNBELIEVABLE that the album is 100% finished, has album artwork, and a title and we knew very little about it? I find that pretty amazing. Why the ten club can't announce shit like other bands I will never understand. The Official Matt Cameron appreciation signature!0 -
seems like conan is a big PJ fan...he seemed really honored to have them playing...0

On the whole I like the song. great drive. will enjoy running to this one. I think there is a lot of wear and tear on Ed's vocals but the enthusiasm is there. Nice to see Stone so animated.0

Agree 100%. I'd much rather hear Ed sing than shout--seems indulgent. Someone like Ed can sing and express a whole range of emotions before he needs to resort to shouting. The band decides what makes the best music, but but I feel like Ed's vocal last night was a bit thin.0 -

The artwork isn't done. That was the cover for the single.
The mix was terrible and I thought Ed sounded better the longer the song went. Also don't think it'll sound so punky on record.0 -
Although I may be to positive about Pearl Jam, I really thought the song was great. I`m much more excited now compared to when I heard World Wide Suicide for the first time.. And that turned out to be the first single from one of the best albums they`ve ever made..
Eddie sounded a bit off, but the sound really wasn`t good. Typical tv performance.. Have you ever heard Springsteen sounded good on tv? Me neither.
Can`t wait for the album!we were but stones, your light made us stars

I liked the song, it's hard to have a solid opinion after one quick listen with such bad audio. I can't blame Ed at all for having an off day, although I worry about his voice in general.
It pisses me off to see fans saying "the song is shit" or whatever, just because they don't like it. That's because I have an immense amount of respect for the band as individuals and for all they've done and stood for the past 18 years. They've put out plenty of songs that I never listen to, but I don't call them "shit" songs. That's totally disrespectful.
I'm grateful they've been around and experimented long enough that they have a wide range of material for all of us to choose from. As much as I LOVE Avocado, I really only listen to it now when I'm exercising or if I'm really high-energy. I find myslef throwing Benaroya on most of the time and I guess I do tend to like the songs where Ed sings rather than shouts and screams. But if they decide to head in that direction, who am I to tell them it's no good. They're artists and should do what they feel is right for them. And I've always got Benaroya if I don't like the new albumI have a feeling that if it turns out to be similar to Avocado that I'll really like, but I just may not listen to it as much. I'm kind of hoping they'll have more slower songs in there, as well.
Selfishly, my main concern if they pursue this direction is Ed's voice and how long they'll be able to keep touring :(Post edited by michelleelise on0 -
About Eddies voice. I really don`t think it`s a problem. He knows his limits. Sure, he isn`t 20 anymore, but he`s good enough to sing the hard rocking songs for years to come. Sure, it might sound as "angry" as it did in the early 90s, but that doesn`t mean that it`s bad.
And you can`t base anything off a tv performance. Did anyone see the band live on the avocado tour? IMHO Eddie didn`t sound that good since the 98 tour.we were but stones, your light made us stars
