Believe me, when I was growin up, I thought the worst thing you could turn out to be was normal, So I say freaks in the most complementary way. Here's a song by a fellow freak - E.V
At the Springsteen shows, people only hold up signs (for the most part) during one part of the set, at which point he goes around collecting them. I think the signs are one of the best parts of the show. It ensures randomness in the setlist and some fun times. Although I do get tired of some idiotic covers (e.g. "Mony Mony").
I too enjoy the part in the show where Bruce grabs a sign from the crowd and busts into something from "Greetings From Asbury Park NJ" or say "Darkness on The Edge of Town".
However, not everyone in attendence of these shows understands or clues into when and where it is appropriate to take part in the sign thing.
I went to 2 shows this year...1 was awesome, the other...A FUCKING NIGHTMARE!!!
My seat was directly behind some overweight turd captain holding up a sign for "Dancing In The Dark" for the entire show.
WE WERN'T EVEN ON THE FLOOR!!! -we were 1st bowl behind the soundboard-
Now The Boss is in his 60's...I'm assuming that his eyesight probably isn't that good; Not to mention, you can hardly see anything from the stage anyways with the lighting.
Yes... Springsteen does go "out into the crowd" to pick up the signs...But did this guy really expect Bruce to walk to the very back of the arena, up to the 1st bowl, and pick up his fucking sign out of the hundreds of thousands in the arena?
C'MON!!!!
To make matters worse, this dumb clown and the half-bright cougar waterhead he was with, kept jumping up and down and wildly spilling beer over everyone in front of them and behind them.
Then when this fat fucker got tired of holding his enormous "Dancing In The Dark" sign, he passed it over to his girlfriend who -drunk out of her fucking sckull- kept dropping the goddamn thing on the head of the guy in front of them.
Anyways...It just a really foul scene and one that I'd like to forget.
I'd really hate to see Pearl Jam concerts morph into this kind of circus.
It's cool to hear rare songs like "Deep" every now and then...but do we really have to do this fucking sign thing every tour?
"Play Leash You Pussies" is one of my favorite EV quotes. I yelled that during a show once, and a girl next to me got offended. ugh.

Let's come up with something more original.
Dude I don't want to be a dick, because it really does suck to have those kinds of people around you at a concert, but that was fucking hilarious to read.
And I don't think Pearl Jam would morph into this. At a Pearl Jam concert, if someone consistently had an experience like yours, I'm sure there would be some major ass kicking.
we just heard deep in hershey. its not that rare yet. wouldnt tremor christ be more appropriate?
I think it's because that time in Hershey in 2003 was the last time it was played. Tremor Christ returned in 2006, albeit for one show. I would agree with you though, that it is more appropriate.

I agree, it's been almost 20 years and that song still hasn't grown on me
