But we all know except for you maybe that during an encore and when the come on stage after an encore would be an appropriate time and a respectfull time to put up a sign. I ask b/c I dunno, but have signs at PJ shows ever gotten in somebody's view at show when somethin was actually goin on? I think it's usually some pretty hardcore fans holdin signs, so I would imagine they're quick to let Ed see the signs, then pull them down.

As someone who has been behind a sign before I can tell you it is a huge piss off. If you think people don't mind if you "hold it up between songs" you're wrong again, a lot of hardcore Pearl Jam fans really enjoy the banter that goes on between songs and to be stuck behind a giant piece of bristol board while Ed is talking really puts a damper on the show.
But if you're the type of person who thinks it's more important for the guys to see your sign then to respect the sight lines of your fellow concert goers then I guess this doesn't matter because you'll just bring one anyways.

I guess it's just that from my personal experiences "respect" is where the sign holder doesn't get it. These people have a big unnecessary sign, a few beers in them then all of a sudden they're holding it up way too long/frequently...people behind them start getting restless, throwing stuff, you're stuck in the middle getting hit with empty beer cups, it's a snowball effect that I'd rather not be a part of...
There is a lot of stuff at shows that I just ignore because it doesn't effect me but when I'm at a show for my favorite band and I can't enjoy the full experience that's when I'll get a little moody...
Dead Man Walking, I totally understand what you are saying. Hopefully people change and other fans respect other fans and enjoy the show. I have been to many shows and have had shows ruined by other fans. Let's hope that fan club members respect there seating and others around them. Good luck right?? The last thing I want is for someone to not enjoy the show because of a sign in front of there face. Let's respect the fans and the band, and keep signs up during the encore and when there is a pause in music and entertainment. That is not asking for much.
No sorry don't recall, I do recall how annoyed he was when people were YELLING OUT LEASH to be played. Small venue so yelling would be very annoying compared to a sign being put up. Thanks anyway.

After all, why should I let this twisted bastard ruin this show for me? This is probably going to be my only chance of seeing the band this year, they are playing a bunch of new songs that I’m trying to listen to, and now this ignorant selfish prick is not only robbing me of a good time, but he is pretty much pissing all over my $75 ticket with his psychotic nonsense.
Having just about enough of this gibberish, I reach over, tap the asshole on the shoulder, and when he turns around…I grab the sign from his hands, rip it into a million pieces, and throw it in his face.
Naturally, He’s not pleased by what I’ve done. He starts pushing me, and threatening to kick my ass.
Security quickly notices the ruckus and comes over.
Since they’ve already been tipped off about this asshole from a couple down at the end of the row, they take one look at this jerk and deem him to be just another rowdy boozed up punk unable to hold his liquor.
To great pleasure of everyone around…He’s thrown out of the show.
We’re all laughing and cheering as Security forcefully drags him out by the arms and legs, kicking, screaming, and crying.
Pretty soon he finds himself out in the parking lot with the rest of the drunken perverts and useless trash.
He finds himself a curb and sits there for a while wishing he was back in the show.
The band doesn’t play “Deep” that night….but they do put on one of their best shows in years.

Besides...is there really a point to holding up a sign with a song request on it... DURING AN ENCORE?

At the Springsteen shows, people only hold up signs (for the most part) during one part of the set, at which point he goes around collecting them. I think the signs are one of the best parts of the show. It ensures randomness in the setlist and some fun times. Although I do get tired of some idiotic covers (e.g. "Mony Mony").
Indianapolis 2003. Ed says this one is for that guy. He was pointing to a guy a row ahead of me. They played Smile. It was what the guys sign said. I would not have heard it if he left his sign at home. I may be wrong, it might have already been on the setlist & he just pointed at the guy cause he had the sign. I say bring your fucking sign and fuck everybody else. Do what YOU want to do. But it should say Satan's Bed instead of Deep.

Seriously, Signs/flags are awful and should be left at home. They already have the set list written and it would take something a lot more than a sign to change their minds. As someone who has been behind a sign before I can tell you it is a huge piss off. If you think people don't mind if you "hold it up between songs" you're wrong again, a lot of hardcore Pearl Jam fans really enjoy the banter that goes on between songs and to be stuck behind a giant piece of bristol board while Ed is talking really puts a damper on the show.
But if you're the type of person who thinks it's more important for the guys to see your sign then to respect the sight lines of your fellow concert goers then I guess this doesn't matter because you'll just bring one anyways.

I guess it's just that from my personal experiences "respect" is where the sign holder doesn't get it. These people have a big unnecessary sign, a few beers in them then all of a sudden they're holding it up way too long/frequently...people behind them start getting restless, throwing stuff, you're stuck in the middle getting hit with empty beer cups, it's a snowball effect that I'd rather not be a part of...
There is a lot of stuff at shows that I just ignore because it doesn't effect me but when I'm at a show for my favorite band and I can't enjoy the full experience that's when I'll get a little moody...

The fuck they don't mind. Every attempted "campaign" since Breath has been met with quite a bit of exasperation from the stage.
Stop attempting to tell the band how to do its job. Nobody comes to your job with a sign that says, "Put extra cheese on it!" Enough already.

Well....After about an hour of enduring this useless waterhead and his vein and utterly irritating attempts to get the bands attention with his stupid goddamn sign, which has been blocking my view, and utterly annoying the living shit out Me, My Wife, and every single unfortunate soul seated within an earshot of this deranged fucker…I decide that I’m at my wits end.
After all, why should I let this twisted bastard ruin this show for me? This is probably going to be my only chance of seeing the band this year, they are playing a bunch of new songs that I’m trying to listen to, and now this ignorant selfish prick is not only robbing me of a good time, but he is pretty much pissing all over my $75 ticket with his psychotic nonsense.
Having just about enough of this gibberish, I reach over, tap the asshole on the shoulder, and when he turns around…I grab the sign from his hands, rip it into a million pieces, and throw it in his face.
Naturally, He’s not pleased by what I’ve done. He starts pushing me, and threatening to kick my ass.
Security quickly notices the ruckus and comes over.
Since they’ve already been tipped off about this asshole from a couple down at the end of the row, they take one look at this jerk and deem him to be just another rowdy boozed up punk unable to hold his liquor.
To great pleasure of everyone around…He’s thrown out of the show.
We’re all laughing and cheering as Security forcefully drags him out by the arms and legs, kicking, screaming, and crying.
Pretty soon he finds himself out in the parking lot with the rest of the drunken perverts and useless trash.
He finds himself a curb and sits there for a while wishing he was back in the show.
The band doesn’t play “Deep” that night….but they do put on one of their best shows in years.

As the audience cheers the band on, his stupid sign is still laying there in tiny broken pieces on the floor, getting stepped on and soaked from dripping beer.
When the show is over, we all walk out of building; Giant smiles on our faces, high from another amazing Pearl Jam show.
We walk to our cars, make plans for the next show, and go home; It's been an amazing night.
Meanwhile, the asshole goes home alone. Tucks himself into bed, puts on TEN and cries into his pillow.
Forever cursing the day he ever brought that goddamn sign to a Pearl Jam show.
