    It's too hard.

Conner O, Ryan Adams, Reznor, and Vedder are ALL amazing, as well as many others!

But hey, that's why music is beautiful, it's not a competition!

Absolutely. I tend to think of him as the John Lennon/Bob Dylan of this day. Of course, there's not THAT much competition out there compared to Lennon/Dylan's time, but that doesn't take away from his greatness.

Definitely. And he's probably already released as many songs as anyone else mentioned in this thread. He's got just a shit load of music out there. Cassadaga is one of my favs for sure.

Conor Oberst for me too, Best song writer since Dylan

As much as I love PJ, I would have to say no. There are way too many artists out there.. that title can't be his unless every song was analyzed.

    That's a LOT of music. :/

can't help but think ed could be if he wanted to. he keeps trying to push the envelope into areas that sometimes don't fit.
not saying i'm not on board with him, but...if you want to be the greatest lyricist of his generation...you need to be much more populist.

I don't really agree with that. You dont' have to be mainstreem to be the best....

we're just a damn lucky bunch of fools to be privy to one of the greatest artists of our generation :)

Like so many others have said, I'm not saying Eddie's the BEST. But he's certainly my favourite.

Might just throw in Elliott Smith for consideration as well. Genuis in my opinion.

Also always loved Gruff Rhys of Super Furry Animals. Nicky Wire of Manic Street Preachers once said:
"Gryff Rhys is the greatest lyricist of our generation".
Now he should know a thing or two about great lyrics having worked with Richey James Edwards!!

"The Best" is up to each person. That person's best would be who speaks to them the most. For me it is Ed and PJ.
