As much as I love PJ, I would have to say no. There are way too many artists out there.. that title can't be his unless every song was analyzed.

    That's a LOT of music. :/

can't help but think ed could be if he wanted to. he keeps trying to push the envelope into areas that sometimes don't fit.
not saying i'm not on board with him, but...if you want to be the greatest lyricist of his generation...you need to be much more populist.

It doesnt make you narrowed minded, but it does mean you need to check out Bright Eyes
Everyone needs to check out Bright Eyes. I cannot emphasize that enough.

I don't really agree with that. You dont' have to be mainstreem to be the best....

we're just a damn lucky bunch of fools to be privy to one of the greatest artists of our generation :)

Eddie Vedder is by far the best singer/songwriter not only of this generation but of all time in my opinion!

Like so many others have said, I'm not saying Eddie's the BEST. But he's certainly my favourite.

Might just throw in Elliott Smith for consideration as well. Genuis in my opinion.

Also always loved Gruff Rhys of Super Furry Animals. Nicky Wire of Manic Street Preachers once said:
"Gryff Rhys is the greatest lyricist of our generation".
Now he should know a thing or two about great lyrics having worked with Richey James Edwards!!
    Cymru Am Byth

PJ albums, at the moment!! -
    1,Vs 2,Vitalogy 3,No Code 4,Yield 5,Ten 6,Backspacer, 7Pearl Jam 8,Binaural 9,Riot Act.

"The Best" is up to each person. That person's best would be who speaks to them the most. For me it is Ed and PJ.

i don't think you can say anyone person is the best. i like ed's musical choices and lyrics, but there are a lot people out there that are equally talented. Ted Leo for example . . . he doesn’t have a voice like ed, but his songs are amazing.

I really really love Bright Eyes,I'm a huge fan.....but 'When the President Talks to God' is the worst thing I've ever heard in my life.Honestly,I've never heard anything more cringe inducing,it was way worse than 'Rock around Barack'.I started supporting the war in Iraq when I heard it,that's how lame it is.

We should always support war. It is the best form of crowd control.

Assuming he is in this generation, and already mentioned once here, Kurt Cobain was the best. Constantly compared to a modern day Bob Dylan as far as his writing went, I think it's gotta be him. Just an opinion of course...

yes! thank you! thats what i was trying to say! whats really amazing is the lack of recognition for gord around here...especially on a singer/songwriter thread.
