i can appreciate that its an extremely subjective pursuit, but recently it just seems that his impact both in terms of creativity, performance, and the emotion that comes through in songs is unique - i really can't think of anyone doing what he's doing with the same impact

I would say no. Eddie is great, and he is one of the best but there are too many other that I would add to that list.
I would say at the top of my list would be Maynard James Keenan(Tool, APC, and Puscifer), he is super creative, lyrically and vocally. And you cant top songs like Lateralus, Wings for Marie, Aedema, Three Libras, Pet or Brenna. He is very diverse in topics, vocal range, and just as a performer.
I will say he is not as raw as Eddie and that might be the one thing Eddie has over him. And honestly that is why I am always going back and forward between the two.
Also on the top of that list I would put Brandon Boyd. He is a poet and his verses are so inspiring and full of imagery. There really is no one else out there like him. and his voice is so unique. The only thing is I think Incubus came out in 96 and PJ and Tool in the early 90's, so I don't know if he qualifies to be in their generation. He is also 10 years younger than Eddie and Maynard.
So those are my top 3 and it depends on the mood I am in who is my favorite.

I knew someone would mention Tool, they always do.I've listened to all their albums and I can respect them but I can't possibly for one second understand how anyone could claim them to be better songwriters than Pearl Jam.
I think Eddie really is the greatest, others who normally win this acclaim would be people like Thom Yorke who I think get more praise than they deserve.Michael Stipe or Billy Corgan come closest.

Just a quick clarification: I don't think Tool is better than PJ, but I also don't think PJ is better than Tool; if that makes any sense.
Pearl Jam I love for the raw emotion their style reminds me a lot of storytelling. where as, Tool is very calculated, they are perfectionist, and you can tell. There is so many levels to their music and turn away from tradition. They treat song writing as if it were a fine art.
My favorite song ever happens to be a tool song, Lateralus. Well, I saw this on youtube the other day and it made me respect them 100 x more. Not to mention it made my favorite song a million times cooler; and I can use it in my classroom now. If you have the time check it out here is the link...

I find that I can just FEEEEEL the emotion when I hear Ed sing. I believe that he believes in what he's singing. He belives in his lyrics (even those of other band members ), and the way in which he delivers them, often touches me deeply.
I have been to many a concert in my time and I have only ever been brought to tears (and no, not those maniacal Fab 4 fan kinds of screamin' n' wailin' tears , just the ones summoned from the heart strings being played), by Ed. He moves me and to me, that makes him the greatest. That also makes PJ the only band I will pay to see umpteen times as well.

Well said, I have to agree.
Not my preference, but the songwriting of those 2 is staggering.
Ed's voice is my favorite in the biz.
In my humble opinion, no one else comes close.

He's definitely one of the top two or three IMO and possibly the best.
Please do.

Bono and Conor Oberst IMO are on the same tier of singing/songwriting as Ed.

There's a constant ringing in my ears
Sense of humor's void and numb
And I'm bored to tears.......
His last two albums definitely stand strong - a lot stronger than Ed's No More, at least.
I also want to throw the words "Mark Lanegan" out there.
