Matt should pack up his crappy drums and find a new profession. Clearly he is not meant to be a drummer. Man I wish Matt Chamberlain said Yes

    Bunch o'fuckin idiots.

Wow, you love calling people names. In another thread you called me "retarded". In this thread you're calling people a "bunch o'fuckin idiots".

Can't you engage in a discussion without name calling? You seem to enjoy doing it unprovoked. :|

yeah, Matts a great drummer, but there have been times when I wondered if it was the mics or if those smaller tom-toms were tuned a little funny. Everytime I hear grievance I think those toms need a slight adjustment. There are a few more that I hear the same thing too.

  • The Beatles were so much better when Pete Best was the drummer.
Ringo was okay when he was with The Hurricanes, but he just couldn't play Beatles music like Pete B.

(p.s.: imho, Matt is one of the best live drummers out there, and it sounds to me at the shows I've seen with him playing that he propels the band into a higher gear. PJ is lucky to have him.)

what i should have said was, i don't know how to play the drums. and you certainly don't have to know how to play the drums in order to know an amazing drummer(dave a.) from a lesser talented one (matt c.). it's pretty obvious.

This has got to be the stupidest post I've read on this board. Again, have you ever listened to Soundgarden?? Odd time signtures, shifts in time mid song, mid verse, singing backup while drumming. Matt Cameron is an immensely talented drummer, and Dave A could nver hold a candle talent wise to Matt C. Debate whether you think one drummer is better suited for Pearl Jam, but do not debate drumming merits of Matt C to Dave A.

    I don't think he's completely off.

Dave was amazing at doing what he does, which is tight rudiments, riding tight on the hihat and slowly loosening to release the tension, and the timing that worked with the guitar changes, and hitting crashes that keep a song fluid. Matt does not do this (though he will cram a tom fill anywhere he can).

Matt is an amazing drum talent. Listening to his playing on Sleight Of Hand and Grievance is evidence of this. But Matt is either unwilling or unable to play the music the way Dave and/or Jack played, like on songs such as Blood, which I've gone into high detail in another thread.

I think Dave CAN hold a floodlight to MC. ...but regardless of my preference for Dave on the early stuff, MC's music that he's written and played with the band holds up very well on it's own. Both are amazing drummers, just on two different wavelengths of playing.

his drums sound like crap! i don't know much about drums other than i know a good drummer when i hear one. and matt's pretty good, but his drums sound horrible. i don't know if it's the brand or the tuning. they sound very weak and dull and flat. the snare sounds like he's hitting.. i don't know.. like a piece of ply wood or something and the toms sound like he hitting a gym mat!! doesn't anyone else hear this?(or barely hear this;) i know he using skins now rather than.. plastic, i guess? i know back in '98 he was using the plastics and they sounded so much louder and better. now, they sound very drowned out. they not bad when you're at the actual concert, but on the bootlegs they're crap. maybe he just needs to tighten them up a little.... and start playing as hard as he used to! and hopefully ed will singing on the new album with the beauty and effort he sings with when he performs with artist other than his bandmates.... think about it.

    Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaawn.
We need another thread like this?
I hate to be the teacher on summer vacation here, but if you can't say anything positive don't say anything at all. Especially if you can't spell check or use proper grammar.

Matt should only be allowed to drum if he never writes another song again. His songs are gaping black holes of suck in every album.

You better rush to the hospital. You have an obvious brain injury.

"Evacuation" - worst album song in the PJ catalog

"Save You" - i can tolerate it.

    "Cropduster" - boring

"You Are" - somewhat interesting, but only because of the Smiths guitar

    "Get Right" - awful

"In the Moonlight" - worse than awful

    "Unemployable" - zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

"The Fixer" - are you fucking kidding me?

    and soon,

Johnny Guitar - Stone already sounds like he is apologizing for this one. i expect nothing but the worst.

i dont care who drums, just keep his songs out before they spread like cancer!

your name makes baby Jesus cry!
  • the thing about this thread is that people aren't understanding the drum sound.
do you blame matt or the guy mixing the boots.or the guy soundchecking levels beforehand?

and on a semi side note, if you asked accomplished musicians today who they'd rather play with
9 out of ten will say matt over dave.
looking to hear of the earth
  • Dave A's kit sounded like shit. All those cymbals and that tinny sounding snare ..

i read somewhere once that Ed or the band asked him to 'tone it down' after or during the '98 tour. does anyone else remember this?

i keep listening to Reach Down from Santa Barbara, and he's drumming on that song is far better than anything else played that night.. and you can hear how he CAN play when not restricted or 'toned down'

what song specifically does Dave sound like shit on? i think he sounds pretty awesome.

i feel the opposite about toning it down, i always thought Matt should tone it up.

i feel like they kept Matt on a tight leash, or for whatever reason (Ed) they wanted to keep the drums and bass in the background. that was a terrible mistake IMO. last year was the first time i could finally enjoy Matt. He seemed to finally come alive and just bang away.

Dave was asked to "tone it down" four years after he was fired? ...man, PJ has some reach!!

PJ sounded best with Dave, on the first three album material (as opposed to how other drummers played the same material). I think they wanted a different personality in the band than Dave, and with the huge differences in their future drummer choices came a huge difference in their future music. Frankly, I don't think PJ cared how it affected the sound of their music. I think they wanted a close friend as their drummer, and that was their first requirement. For me their first three albums (particularly VS and Vitalogy) are my favorite, and I miss those songs tremendously.
