Achtung Baby is an incredible album, the only truly avoidable album for me would be Pop, that is well below par... :?

haven't read the whole thread (the suck comment is why) but that's a good selection you're off to get...but i would listen to joshua tree before getting rattle and hum...same with zooropa....listen to actung baby first...and if you have then ignore my post and enjoy.....they've made some pretty amazing music over the last 30 years

yeah i actually got war, achtung baby, the joshua tree, how to dismantle an atomic bomb, and no line on the horizon and i think joshua tree is my favorite with achtung baby a close second.
i went to a record store but alas.. they did not have rattle and hum or zooropa, only in vinyl form and since im in australia temporarily it makes no sense for me to buy another record player just to listen to those two albums. i did however get boy (cuz my mom insisted) and october mostly because it was there, plus the dvd zoo tv live from sydney.
i can't wait! i've never been so excited about another band before, it's always been pearl jam pearl jam pearl jam but now i can get excited for u2 and it's great because i like being a fan of a band that has a lot of merch out and is fine with super stardom and can be on the cover of a magazine without making a big deal or wiping their butts with the cover. don't get me wrong i love that pearl jam is like that, it's just fun to be on the other side for a change (and if i'm wrong about any of this or something, gimme a break i'm new at this )
I saw them do Hold Me Thrill Me on the POP tour in 97 at wembley Stadium London as one of their oncores.
it was pretty awesome and still has to be one of my favourite U2 track, wasted on a god awful Batman movie.
Can't go wrong with Achtung and remains my 2nd fav album of all time, easily their best Zooropa is a step forward if you enjoy that, not such a big fan of the earlier stuff, I don't hate POP like so many and will take it over the last 2 over produced efforts.
No lIne is a real return to form but Boots & Stand Up Comedy are real let downs.
i currently cannot stop listening to Zooropa. What a freaking great album.
"Get your head out of the mud Baby..."
Ive tried so hard, so many different times to get into U2, but I just cant. Zooropa is my favorite album by them, probably because its least like them. I just cant do U2.

That's one of the main reasons I love that album it just didn't sound like them. The tour was just as much fun too.

Yeah, I never got the hatred for Pop either, it's not a bad album. I don't mind dance music though, so songs like Last Night on Earth and Mofo are cool with me. It's not a classic, but it's not a bad album. And Please and Gone are great songs.
Boots might be the worst song U2 has ever done. The album outside of that is excellent though.
To the haters of U2, pull the stick out of your asses and concentrate your hatred on something else. Seriously. No one cares you suffer in their presence. Eat a cookie.
I really like U2. Their new stuff is only ok. I'm really digging the first two songs off of their latest album.
i've never understood the negative comments from PJ fans about this band ,i saw them yrs ago here on long island playing the college venues ...i don't have anything bad to say about them i just don't follow them at all anymore ..
So since my two favorite U2 albums, Achtung Baby and Zooropa, I'd rate the last four in this order:
No Line on the Horizon
Pop
All That You Can't Leave Behind
Atomic Bomb
I was so disapointed with Atomic Bomb I didn't even try to get tickets for the last tour, but No Line on the Horizon is a real return to form for me. I like all songs except for one. I agree with the earlier comment about Get on Your Boots - absolutely terrible, substandard, hacked attempt at a pop hit.
Pissing, moaning, complaining and just being all around negative seems to be the common theme of the PJ board...but I'm a newbie here so what the fuck do I know.

no you've summed it up....it's really just a vocal minority though...most of us love music...the rest are more concerned about image
Bullet the Blue Sky- Edge is the fucking best here
Mysterious Ways
One
Electrical storm Will orbit Mix
Elevation
With Or Without You/I Still havent found....classic
Desire
Bad
Sunday Bloody Sunday- energy on this tune...
New years Day- also an old but great song

some decent tunes on the new one too
DAMN STRAIGHT. they've tons of material that still, to this day, stands up against everything else out there. i dont suspect anyone who has seen them live thinks theyre overrated. altho despite all that, their most recent album is VERY lazy.
anyways, i think its a fucking shame that, even in Ireland, people seem too quick to forget all the incredible music theyve put out. and the fact that lyrically, Bono is a fucking legend:
Casepoint for lyrics: Miss Sarajevo, Running To Stand Still (and it's references to Dublin slums), Bullet The Blue Sky, North & South of The River, Wake Up Dead Man, All I Want Is You, 40, Bad, Kite, Please, If God Will Send His Angels.....etc
so, now that i've listened to them for a full 3 months i can safely say they are my second favorite band i knew since after i went out and bought pretty much every cd they had and immediately liked almost every song and getting a few of their dvds (i even bought batman forever just because my favorite song of theirs was on there ). i've never felt this way about a band since pearl jam! every song is new to me, it's fun to obsess over a band as popular as they are. i like going into stores and getting excited that one of their songs is playing, that doesn't happen often with pj. plus they like to give their fans a lot of stuff. i mean, the 10c is awesome and all but over on u2.com they have like, videos of them goofing around and having fun and i think that's cool! i like how their fans goof around with each other and have fun, it's getting kind of rare over here :? there isn't constant bitching over on u2.com, there's even a "bono's butt looks cute" thread! if there was a thread like that over here 20% of it will be "oh eddie vedder's butt looks cute in this picture!" and the other 80% will be people screaming "eddie vedder is not here for you to look at his butt he is a person not a piece of meat this thread is pointless it's about the music not how good looking he is      " bs that kind of gets annoying.
my favorite album has to be zooropa though the rest of their albums are up there with the exception of october, the unforgettable fire, and pop but that's mostly because i haven't really given those albums a chance yet. i'm thinking of getting a tattoo with some u2 inspiration (and pj of course!) it's getting me excited just thinking about it!
i also really need a ticket to one of their concerts pronto. it just sucks that i got into them this badly a full month after tickets went on sale. GRRR!

I really like U2. Their new stuff is only ok. I'm really digging the first two songs off of their latest album.
Word. It just cracks me up because if haters actually really knew anything about U2, they would see some similarities to Pearl Jam (off the stage) in the way they carry themselves as a band (charities, staying true to their morals).
to the original poster:
Joshua Tree, Rattle and Hum (dvd and CD), Achtung Baby are the essential U2 cds. I also highly recommend the Live in Paris 1987 live album on Itunes because it has songs from the first few albums but they are waaaay better live.
"Well, I think this band is incapable of sucking."

it IS funny. i see a lot of people say "oh the edge thinks he's hot shit because he gave himself a kick ass nickname what a douche" but i've been reading up on u2 (i bought u2 by u2, it just so happened to be on sale for $15!) and he's supposedly called the edge because he's ugly. plus so many people say "oh i hate bono he's such a douche and he thinks he's better than everyone" when i don't really get that vibe from him; even he admits he can be annoyingly preachy. ugh.
anywaaay, i just got my mom to get me rattle and hum. i think she was happy to get it since she actually got to see it in theaters and now i get to see it now all i need is a ticket to one of their giants stadium shows. and i guess i could get the live in paris cd. god it's good to be a fan of a band with so much shit to get!
