and i'm starting to really like them. i've been listening to them for years, but i just never actually.. listened. i know some people on here say bad things about them being a corporate band and whatever, but i still started listening to them now more than ever, really paying attention to their songs... i'm starting to really get into them :) i can't help it, i just have this newfound connection to them and it makes me feel good! i've actually listened to this one song and seen the music video about 25 times today... (it'd be more but i'm forcing myself not to listen to it before i play it out and stop liking it :o  ) i only have 8 songs from them and was wondering if anyone knows of which songs were really good that i could listen to? please tell me there are still people who like U2! i've seen so much negativity on the porch i'm a little scared to ask here! :P

  • Put down the Joshua Tree and walk slowly away from the album. Trust me, no one will get hurt if you just put it down now. Your eardrums will thank you.
  • sooooo i take it you dont like that album or what :P any particular reason for your post? it just seems i hear a lot of negativity about u2 but never any specific reason why...

    A) I'm really not a fan of their sound in general. I tried to get into them in High School but I really just kidded myself around for a couple months. The only cd I can really listen to by them is Rattle & Hum.

    B) Bono drives me up a wall. He thinks he is God's gift to the world.

    C) I had an ex whose mom was their #1 Fan.

i seeeeeeee... yeah i guess C can pretty much ruin a band for anyone.. i like their sound and i think bono's voice is sexy ;) as for B, i don't really pay attention to what he does so i wouldn't know about that, plus stuff like that doesn't bother me too much.
i'm gonna go listen to rattle and hum now just cuz it's the one you tolerate :D

Which 8 songs do you have and what is your favorite song of their? I think I see a screen shot from the video from 'hol me thrill me kiss me kill me' in your avatar... that the one you're addicted to? If so, you need to go buy Achtung Baby right now. It's a classic album and more in line with that song. Then you can get the Joshua Tree and War. Those 3 albums are kind of their classics and in some sense give a good guide to all the different phases of the bands.

yes i'm completely obsessed with hold me thrill me kiss me kill me! it basically has everything i've ever wanted in a song. i've actually liked it for years but for some reason today was just like, oh goodness i'm in love! (it beat out my favorite song of 10 years, kiss from a rose, which happens to be on the same album) i've been listening to some achtung baby and i really like it, especially mysterious ways. i'm going into the city on friday so i'll hit up a record store while i'm at it. thanks for the input! :)

Np, and thanks for the compliment. I've loved Hold Me, Thrill me, etc for years... one of my fav U2 songs and I never could figure out why it kinda went under the radar. Such a great tune! Achtung will be right up your alley... the first half of the album is stunning. Let me know what you think when you get it!

    Hi there!

I used to love U2. I think their first albums War, Boy, October, The Unforgettable Fire, and The Joshua Tree are masterpieces. I have just fallen out of love and not really liked anything since. But I think you can't go wrong with anything from those five albums.
... and the will to show I will always be better than before.

Interesting. Boy, War, and Joshua Tree I agree with, but I never much liked October and for some reason the Unforgettable Fire never sounded like a complete album to me (though the singles are among their best).

I actually agree on Unforgettable Fire. And October for me revolves around that short song. For some reason, it means immensely to me, and really carries me over and evens me out. It didn't hurt that they unexplicably played it the only time I saw them live... 22 years ago

The easy thing to do would be to get their best of the 80's and best of the 90's cds and go from there. Figure out what other songs you really like. I was always a tepid fan through the Rattle and Hum album, and then became a huge fan after Achtung Baby. Like an earlier poster said, if you like their kind of electro type stuff you'll surely enjoy Achtung Baby. And if you really like that you'll probably like Zooropa as well. Yes, there are plenty of haters on this board, but they didn't make any bad or boring albums until at leaast Pop. Boy, October, The Unforgettable Fire, The Joshua Tree, Rattle and Hum, Achtung Baby, Zooropa - all solid albums, some more than others.

i currently cannot stop listening to Zooropa. What a freaking great album.

Hey there I've been a fan since the Boy Tour in Boston which I saw by mistake when I thought I was going to see the B52's and the J Geils Band. I saw them then and every tour till ZOO TV World Tour. By The Joshua Tree Tour everybody jumped on their band wagon and my love for them has faded some. Their ticket prices has gotten outrageous to say the least but through connections I can now see them for free IF they play the Verizon Center in DC.

I really got hooked on them though after this performance at The US Festival 1983 truly amazing. Back then Bono did whatever it took to gain the audience's attention and he surely did so in front of 500,000 people.

    Achtung Baby is classic.

"Ultraviolet" and "Tryin to throw his arms around the world" are in a class of their own

I put Trying to Throw Your Arms Around the World on my son's night night music playlist. I'm not sure if it relaxes him but it's a favorite track of mine as well. I love the rhythm and flow. So underrated.

Love them. I made whole-hearted contribution to a similar thread a few months back, and after it, i realised that i just love U2. i used to try convince myself that they had songs i didnt like. It turns out thats not true! :D

I had exams the mornings that the 3 Croke Park gigs went on sale, and im very disappointed. Wouldve preferred an indoor arena show anyway, but in Ireland that doesnt exist. Maybe ill score tickets closer to the time.

Id love to hear Hold Me Kiss Me live someday.

I do think there are songs I don't care for... I feel like a lot of their albums tend to fizzle out rather than finish strong. And I can't stand 'the Sweetest Thing' anymore ;) But when they're on, nobody can touch them for what they do!

I have tickets to their second show at Soldier Field in Chicago, but it's on a Sunday and my first day on my new job is the Monday after... hopefully I can work something out because they're the only fav band I have that I've never seen... for some reason I missed both the last two tours :( I think the cost was prohibitive at the time.

You'd think of all places in the world, Ireland would have indoor arenas?

i would really love to hear them live! if i had known about the 360 tour i would have tried for tickets at giants stadium but i wasn't this obsessed with them 3 months ago so i wouldn't have really bothered or cared. it sucks! "if i had known then what i know now.." but whatever, i'll be better prepared for the next tour.
and i read on wikipedia that they only played hold me thrill me... during that 95 tour or whatever, and then never played it again :( if they ever suddenly decided to play it at a concert i was at, i swear i'd cry.

i agree. totally. i've fallen in love! the fly, mysterious ways, one, so cruel, they're all incredible songs. i never thought i'd find another band i could listen to all the time like i do with pearl jam (though, of course, not to the same degree.. i think pj will always be my one and only true love ;) )

i'm an obsessive person and, being from NY, an impatient person so i couldn't wait a whole extra day to get my hands on some music  :ugeek: i've always liked u2 ever since i was little, my mom tried to get me hooked on good rock music ever since i was in utero. she made me listen to aerosmith and police when i was just a fetus (my first favorite song was janie's got a gun, i remember rocking out to it when i was 3) so i've always liked songs like, sunday bloody sunday and with or without you, but i never actually took the time to sit and listen to and digest each song and now i've fallen in love. i can't believe there are people out there that don't get the same satisfaction and joy and just pure bliss just from listening to a good piece of music, i feel bad for them. listening to these albums is just pure joy for me. think im gonna get rattle and hum and zooropa tomorrow... i was gonna take it easy but fuck it! :D
i'm off to bed.. (well after this album is over) peace!

oh and i love sweetest thing more now that i know it was written for his wife as a sorry for forgetting her birthday. i think it's really cute and (for lack of a better phrase) a really sweet thing for him to do :)

Going against the grain here, Unforgettable Fire, Rattle & Hum and Boy (the Deluxe edition, please) are my faves....despite really being tired of hearing "Pride (In the Name of Love)....which is on both Unforgettable Fire and Rattle & Hum....and if you know anybody with the Live Aid dvd...it's worth checking out their set there.

Oooh, make sure you get to Soldier Field...i dont mind to much missing them as ive seen them twice, but get yourself there, and get home for a good/great/amazing nights sleep before work?

Logically, we should have plenty of indoor arenas. But that would require forward planning, focused investment, and common sense. Like i said, there are no indoor arenas!.....ah no, theres the O2, but its more like an indoor amphitheatre than an "arena" as i see them (you know, like all the cool venues in america - basketball/hockey stadiums). i would really love to hear them live! if i had known about the 360 tour i would have tried for tickets at giants stadium but i wasn't this obsessed with them 3 months ago so i wouldn't have really bothered or cared. it sucks! "if i had known then what i know now.." but whatever, i'll be better prepared for the next tour.
and i read on wikipedia that they only played hold me thrill me... during that 95 tour or whatever, andthen never played it again :( if they ever suddenly decided to play it at a concert i was at, i swear i'd cry.

Theres some footage of it on youtube, (the 95 Hold Me Kiss Me performances) and i dont know how i like it...but like u said - if i was there when they played it, I would cry, shit myself, and do a sexy little dance all at the same time!

They busted out a few songs they hadnt played much in decades on the last tour (Party Girl, Tick Tock, The Electric Co, An Chat Dubh, etc), so you never know. When i saw them first they played Wake Up Dead Man, i was genuinely stunned because it was so unlikely. (And because the live performance of it pisses all over the recorded version). Point being that at a U2 show there will always be a song that takes your breath away, even if its not the one you expected.
