There are some people being posted who aren't exactly underrated. Prince's guitar-playing and general musicianship has been raved about for as long as I can remember. John Entwhistle was called the Hendrix of bass players. John Mayer's guitar skills have never been in question, just the songs he writes/sings. When I think underrated, I think of people who are always neglected when people create their lists of great musicians.
I already mentioned Lindsay Buckingham, who never appears on anyone's greatest guitarists lists, and yet he can play circles around most of the people who are listed. His finger-picking style is so difficult, and at times, he makes his one guitar sound like several.
Jon Theodore, formerly the drummer of The Mars Volta, is another example. I have never, ever, seen a better drummer than him. But if someone starts a "great drummers" thread, he might be mentioned once or twice.
Or how about Ben Folds? Do people have any clue how good of a piano player he is? That he does things like put altoid tins on specific wires in the piano to creat unique sounds?
It makes much more sense to live in the present tense.

Yeah, I only posted that list because someone said Mike and Stone never make any lists.
I'm sticking with Bob Mould for his playing and writing and McMurtry for his writing (me, I'd love to have his guitar skills but they're nothing special in the grand scheme).

Mike McCreardy & Stone Gossard (Pearl Jam) : Four-Armed Monster
Ed O’Brien & Jonny Greenwood (Radiohead) : Dark Side Of The Moon Explorers
good list! "Four-Armed Monster" ...never heard that before but i love it!
Kaki King is great too. saw her open for John Butler few years back, quality stuff. several solid albums.
Besides his Radiohead writings, Johnny Greenwood composes classical music scores & soundtracks, he's a musical genius. And i love Ed O'Briens voice, and he wrote the guitar neck-played intro to Lucky, so that alone makes him a legend.
I gotta throw Jeff Buckley into the mix. I know a lot of people here know him, but most people I know have never heard of him. I just finished a book on him called "A Pure Drop" and apparently, his mind was literally a jukebox. He could play ANYTHING at the drop of a hat. (some examples are on his Live at Sin-E Deluxe Edition album) And he was a very underrated guitar player.
I'll also second Lindsay Buckingham. Simply an amazing talent all around. Incredible guitar player.
Also, I'm adding Stephen Stills. His bass work with CSN is awesome.

Buckley's an oddity ... I'd say the people that loved him probably overrate him ... and the people that don't know him or only heard one song (Last Goodbye) severely underrate him.

For sure. Lyrically brilliant. I think he defines Americana, in the best way possible. The Animal Years is one of the best albums of the last few years. He's also fantastic live. You don't see many who play with such pure joy.
I'll put Greg Dulli out there. He's morphed through three fantastic bands with Afghan Whigs, Twilight Singers and Gutter Twins.
Others: Michael Penn, oft overshadowed by his wife, Aimee Mann. And that fact that it takes him decades to put an album out.
TIm O'Reagan - the third voice of The Jayhawks
Bill Berry - I'm an REM champion, and have long fought off this correlation...but they haven't put out a truly great album since Hi-Fi, bill's last.
Lyle Lovett - He is that asymmetrical face, weird hair guy, but he's also a country-folk master. His buddy Robert Earl Keen is pretty damn good too.
i agree. vocal range is amazing. He always seemed to write the more catchy and melody-filled DBT songs
Yet, ironically, his solo stuff is quite a departure from his DBT days. That's just from my perspective however.

John Entwhistle - bassist for The Who ... casual music fans always talk about Pete, Roger or Keith first but, but The Ox was an absolute beast on the bass.
I couldn't agree more. The album 'Quadrophenia' is proof enough, but if you consider there entire catalog, he's just a monster. I remember when I first started listening to The Who, i listened to the bass and thought "damn, that sure is a different way to play the bass".

All true, but again, how is he underrated? I've never heard a "greatest bassist ever" conversation that didn't include his name early and often. In fact, I'd consider him to be the most respected bass player in the history of rock.
It makes much more sense to live in the present tense.
Ooohhhh there's a serious contender for the title right there. He's got it all too - a genuine bona fide genius. and a hell of a singer, performer, pianist, songwriter and VERY distinctive guitarist.
Are you doing another "Backyard and Lawnchair" concert this year?
