Nels Cline-I know he has gotten a lot of recognition lately for being in wilco, but seriously the guy kills on guitar and can play any kind of music. He is one of the rare musicians who can play VERY FAST, but still have soul and emotion in his speed.

Brann Dailor- Mastodon drummer guy has some serious drum chops. When many metal bands just double bass their way through a song he has amazing fills that are awesome!

Lead Signer dude from the band deer tick- yeah i don't knwo his name but he has impressed me with their first album .I can't wait to see where things go

Love the Hip, but find a lot of the lyrics cheesy and bad (not all, but a lot)

As a lyricist, Gord Downie from The Tragically Hip. Simply stunning lyrics.

I think his lyrics are a bit too Canadian for me to always get them, though he does have some great imagery/impressionism in them.

That said, I'm going to throw Rob Baker into the mix... for me, his guitar playing is what makes the Hip so amazing. He never overdoes it with guitar wanking, but he's so soulful in his playing. Listen to the New Orleans is Sinking version from Live Between Us... most other guitarists would have played twice as many notes and shown off, but he doesn't and it makes the song so much more powerful. Love this guy.

I'll also mention Dough Martsch... maybe he does get respect, but Built to Spill are the most mind-blowingly good guitar band that nobody knows.

And I second McCready/Gossard. I can't think of a single guitar duo that plays better together than these two, but they're always forgotten when it comes list-making time :(

The lyrics ARE pretty Canadian, but I think they're great..

38 years old, Bobcaygeon, Wheat Kings, Nautical Disaster, all AMAZING songs IMO. Wheat Kings especially because it's a true story...

Agree about that guitar playing he never overdoes it and is very smooth; however, sometimes I like overdoing it a la Mr. McCready

i think that Elliott Smith is one of the most underrated songwriters & guitarists of the last 15 years or so. the guy could flat-out play & his fingerpicking is beautiful. structurally, the songs are quite complex & he used harmonies better than most of his peers. and the words...wow. just my opinion, but i really wish the guy was still writing music today.

+1. Went through a serious Elliott stage a while back where I listened to him all the time. The guy was incredible.

actually, John Mayer. After seeing him play a live show on one of the music stations, he's actually a really good guitarist.

John Entwhistle - bassist for The Who ... casual music fans always talk about Pete, Roger or Keith first but, but The Ox was an absolute beast on the bass.

wasnt that a "top 20 that didnt make the original top 100" list?

Zakk Wylde. That man can shred a guitar like no other. Not to mention he plays drums, piano, harmonica, bass, and any other string instrument. His solo work is second to none and if you're into metal, Black Label Society is one of the best around today.

wasnt that a "top 20 that didnt make the original top 100" list?

    It was this list:

John Mayer : Blues Preacher, Pop Prince, Friend to Clapton

Derek Trucks ( The Derek Trucks Band and The Allman Brothers) : On Tour Since Age Nine! Jams a Specialty!

John Fruciante (Red Hot Chili Peppers) : World’s Leading Psychedelic-Funk Guitar Visionary

Luther D ickinson (North Mississippi All-Stars) : Southern-Fried Rocker (there's a space in his last name because otherwise it'll be edited)

Nels Cline (Wilco) : The Avant Romantic

Warren Haynes (The Allman Brother Band and Gov’t Mule) : Blues-Rock Road Warrior

Jim James & Carl Broemel (My Morning Jacket) : Skynard-Art Theorists

Adam Jones (Tool) : Prog-Metal King

Chuck Garvey & Al Schnier (MOE) : Space-Guitar Heroes

Kaki King : Van Halen Meets Bootsy

Mike McCreardy & Stone Gossard (Pearl Jam) : Four-Armed Monster

Tom Morello (Rage Against The Machine and Audioslave) : Iron Man Of Hip-Hop Guitar

Omar Rodriguez-Lopez (Mars Volta) : The Extremist

Ed O’Brien & Jonny Greenwood (Radiohead) : Dark Side Of The Moon Explorers

Matt Pike (Sleep and High on Fire) : Stoner Metal Ruler

Jack White (The White Stripes and The Raconteurs) : The Crawling King Snake

They really did have a good take on how Mike and Stone play together.
