Nope, I got over those fears back in the 90's. I have finally come to terms with my PJ love, that I will most likely like all of their new music. So far, that has rang true. Sure, i have a favorite album, which by nature I have ranked them, but i do love them all.
Yep, what aNiMaL said.
"Hello Oregonians. Hello Washingtonians. Hello Portland..where the fuck are we? We're in Ridgefield!"
I loved Riot Act and the Avocado. I think that there are songs on those albums that prove that they still have it one way or another. After the Roskilde Festival, we all knew they were going to take it one of two ways. They could come back all guns blazing and heavy, or tone it down with some sentimental songs about love and hope. We all know it hit them hard what happened that day and I personally look at this album as a piece stuck in time. Don't get me wrong, I love the whole acoustic feel and whatnot when I need it, but I can't help listening to this cd without knowing what was going on through their minds when they wrote these songs. Regardless, this album truly shows how creative they were.
As for the Avocado, you can see that they were trying to get back into their roots. It was certainly heavier then Riot Act and for good reason. They had some stuff to be angry about this time around. The war was still going on, and even though it was in 2002 with Riot Act, except for BushLeaguer their really wasn't any political songs depicting how they felt. So, naturally we all had to expect that was coming in Avocado. But there are songs on this album that give me hope that this next album is going to be even better. I personally love "Severed Hand". I think it shows that they know where they came from musically and they can advance that as a group. And to stay on their emotional side, "Come Back" is one of my favorite songs by them. It's just so beautifully written and put together so perfectly. So I can honestly say without any hesitation that I think this next album is going to kick our asses one way or another, and I personally am looking forward to an Eddie Vedder footprint on my ass for years to come

Riot Act shows how creative there were? It doesn't have anywhere near the creative depth of their middle period. Vitalogy, No Code, Yield, and Binaural show how creative they can be. Ten and Vs are just great rock records. RA, as a whole, is somethin else entirely different. I can't knock someone if it's their favorite, I just don't consider it to be in the same league as their earlier albums. S/T has alot of the aspects of a great PJ record, imo. I just don't think they really nailed it like they have in the past. I still like it considerably more than RA, though. I like alot of the album. But in several of the songs there are small parts that I don't really dig. Kinda nitpicky, but they have made perfect albums in the past.
It's not impossible that they make a career defining album, but history isn't really on their side. I'm not holding my breath, but I won't be shocked.
EDIT: Just curious, but how old are you? You look quite youthful in your avatar.
I am 21. And by no means is Riot Act my favorite album by these fine gentlemen. Vs. is and always will be. I know I was too young for it to hit me when it came out, but personally on so many levels, that record has changed my life. I just think that Riot Act showed they could make an album based on their acoustic qualities and make it decent. I love "Save You", "I Am Mine", and "LBC". And to be honest "Thumbing My Way" is how I got my gf into Pearl Jam in the first place. I just think that if you didn't know who Pearl Jam was till 2005 like me, that you can look at it in an entirely different light. It seems to blend into the mix a little more.
Edit: I realize that the 3 songs I listed off of the album that I like are not acoustic haha.
I love Riot Act and Avocado. I don't know when it became fashionable on this forum to bash the newer material and worship the "middle albums" as the be-all, end-all of existence, but nothing I see on this forum really surprises me anymore.
I'm a little unsure only because I am not a big fan of the studio albums, I listen to live shows 99.99% of the time. When I listen to the studio tracks they all sound kind of flat to me. So I'm a little curious what this new album experience will be like for me.
I think the new album will rock hard. They all seem to be less stressed now so I see them getting back to basics and singing about what they feel and enjoy. I am surprised that no one has considered that the up coming tour will be short and a ways off so he has time to tour a small bit for a month or two. Seems to me that he albums is probably nearly done. I am also surprised no one has entertained the thought that he may kick out another solo album at years end or early next year. Anything is possible in the Pearl Jam world but crappy? Never!! It will not happen! Only the best can come from the guys.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I love the 2 abovementioned albums and think they're great, but people on this forum have to whine and moan and complain for the sake of it. I don't know why they bother being fans of PJ if all they want to do is bash them. I'm sure the new album will be just as good as the others, but no matter how good it still won't please everyone and there will still be plenty of people who bash it. I'm sure I'll love this album like I love the others. Sure PJ have put out a few weak songs, but no one band on the planet has a repertoire of nothing but brilliant songs, PJ have way more good songs than bad. So I'm looking forward to the new album and sure it won't be "weak", but the band won't be able to please everyone no matter what they come up with.

Why can't people talk about what albums they like AND dislike? If you don't think there is a difference in the quality of their albums, why do you bother being a fan?
You're sure the new album will be just as good as the others? What the hell does that even mean?
To ANYBODY that says anything along the lines of "turn down the lights, smoke a bong, strip off all your clothes etc etc and give it another listen", why? I'm all for givin an album some listens to kinda get a feel for it, but there are too many albums that I really enjoy listening to "waste" time trying to dig something. I've gone back and discovered some stuff that I overlooked, but once I've given somethin a fair chance, it's not often that I go back on it.
I think there has been some pretty solid debate and nobody else has brought up whining and complaining til now, so why start? Nobody has really insulted any albums or its listeners.
I've got my fingers crossed that the new album will be as good as "Vitalogy."

After reading Ed's interview in newsweek and then finding out that he's touring solo I got scared.
Is anyone else worried that with Ed in such a good mood the songs might be lame or will the work of Mike, Stone, Jeff and Matt be enough to overcome hearing Ed sing about how great he thinks Obama is? I voted for McCain just to piss off Eddie.
I am praying that I'm way off base here. There is nothing in this world that I look forward to more than a new Pearl Jam album. Nothing.
Somebody please put my mind at ease...
Peace
Well supposedly, according to Jeff, there is a track called "The Fixer" that he loves. My $ is that track is about Obama
I'll be happy with a balance, I like the odd short song, yes Inside Job showed an almost Floyd like sound to the band. I don't mind if they do epic songs or short ones, as long as they are good. When they say they are working on shorter songs, I'd be surprised if they make a whole album of them, it's just not their style. Brendan's return is the most promising news for me. His last album was Yield and that is alongside Vs their best album to date in my view.
I'm not sure how people can determine the mood of the band form Ed doing solo shows. Why will this make the album not important to them. The album could be in the finishing stages, the fact they are putting it out could mean it will just appear like The Raconteurs did with Consolers all of a sudden, the vinyl only for the first few weeks would be cool but unlikely.
The new album could be allot nearer than we think.
I'd like to see them recreate the same release pattern for Vitalogy re-release as they did with the original release, vinyl first then CD a few weeks later, nothing to lose there, it's a re-release so only fans are going to buy it.
I'm not dissing RA, in fact I'm going to give it a good listen and see if my view as changed of it. It's just it hasn't clicked with me yet, Binaural took until a few years ago for me to start to dig that, so who knows.
The only reason why the band did that with Vital/Vinyl release, was bc when they released 10, they werent allowed to issue it on vinyl. As they got tremendous and started to sell millions of albums, they had sony by the balls during Vital. So they released the vinyl version 2 weeks before the CD release. You will not see that again. Do you guys remem ST? they didnt release the vinyl till 2 months AFTER the CD release!
As far as "how good" the new album will be, its NEVER going to be like anything prior to NO CODE. I know alot of you on hear like YIELD, but to me that was one of their weakest releases! it has not aged well at all! VS/VITAL were their best albums (if any of you on here were fans back then when those albs were first released will probably agree with me)

I don't think Ten and Vs have aged half as well as Vitalogy-Binaural.It could be b/c I came into the band late in that run, but I actually got the album in order of release and pretty well got into each one before the next, sans Live on 2 Legs. Ten and Vs are very immediate and if you go track by track they're virtually unbeatable, but there's a bit more to an album that and the middle stuff has whatever that may be.

listening to the albums in order is not the same as being a fan DURING those times. During the times of 10-Vital the band was more "mysterious". Eddie Vedder was different then. Ill never forget the nite i saw PJ play HAIL HAIL on Letterman. I WAS SHOCKED TO SEE VEDDER THAT WAY! He was "happy" ......dressed better.....it was someting people werent used to seeing . Those on here that remember can understand what im trying to say........
From then on, Vedder has never been the same as he was from 10-Vital.......It was almost as if he did it on purpose. Grunge was over, and that "depressed/ angered/pain" bit was played out for all that it was worth......
im never worried...but I have to say I've never been a fan of the self titled album...I was never a big Riot Act fan either, but I would take 1/2 full over any song off the new album...especially in concert!

The new album will probably take months to surface on vinyl although Sony surprised me with getting Ten out simultaneously last month. I will be interested to see how they handle releasing this over seas, I don't wnat to wait for it to come to my door days after release. They will need to set up something to get in stores day of release.
I disagree I find Vs to still sounds fresh as it did, as I said in another post I knew someone would dislike Yield and they appeared. I guess a band who have changed their sound quite significantly will have those who love some albums and others who won't get it at all. I think all their albums have been good with a varying degree of of how good amongst them. I'm an original fan so I was their from the beginning pretty much and Vs up to Yield will always be special, although the Ten redux has certainly made me appreciate that album allot more.
RA just happens to be the album I dig the least but over time I may come to get it more.
I watched Imagine in Cornice yesterday, can't say I gave much attention when I bought it when it had been first released but I found it really enjoyable.
The band seem to be really into performing a real interesting and somewhat document of the tour as opposed to the traditional route, which I think the Band was trying to avoid. That bonus with MMJ with Eddie doing a Quick One is incredible. I watched my Who classic albums Who's Next DVD straight after it got me in the mood so much.
I was fearful for no reason. The album is beautiful. Thanks Pearl Jam.

Please play all the songs in Pittsburgh
