Is anyone else afraid the new pj record could be weak?

After reading Ed's interview in newsweek and then finding out that he's touring solo I got scared. :|

Is anyone else worried that with Ed in such a good mood the songs might be lame or will the work of Mike, Stone, Jeff and Matt be enough to overcome hearing Ed sing about how great he thinks Obama is? I voted for McCain just to piss off Eddie.

I am praying that I'm way off base here. There is nothing in this world that I look forward to more than a new Pearl Jam album. Nothing.

Somebody please put my mind at ease...

Peace

Regardless of political bent (I personally voted for the Green party), the new PJ album will kick ass again. Have they ever let us down? No.

    Chill. 8-)

you're afraid?? I mean I want it to be a good record but I'm not going to kill myself if it's not what I'm into... But the other 8 albums have been good so why not number 9?

Calm down a bit.. surely there is something in life you enjoy more than a new PJ album? PJ have delivered good album when Clinton was President so why not Obama?

Idunno, man. I voted for Obama, and excitedly so, but I sure don't think the world has been a giant hippie orgy since innauguration day. Lots and lots and lots of stuff still sucks, and there's plenty to have a snarl about.

On the other hand, babies have a way of turning people into suckers, so mebbe that's what pussifies Ed and the rest of the boys. ;)

Been listening to Vs. for the first time in a while, and am really amazed by how much of that album's snarl is missing from the last few records... even Avocado. I know, times change, people grow up, blah blah blah... I don't expect good thrashing stuff from them anymore... just good stuff.

It's still Pearl Jam, and they like the same music that I do (i.e., Pearl Jam music). It may be different, but it's going to be something that they all like & have worked hard on. So no -- it won't be weak.

I remember Eddie saying something about them having to tweak RVM so that it sounded less pop-like, and that song is incredible. These guys know what they're doing. Have faith, otter. And enjoy the ride they're going to be taking us on.

Given that the last 2 albums were very weak, and the one before that was just good, I think it's a distinct possiblity. I don't think the change in administrations has anything to do with it though. Their albums while Bush was in office sucked and the ones they did while Clinton was in office were awesome.

I hope you were joking about basing your vote on some half-baked notion that it might affect a rock band's new album.

Totally disagree, Riot Act is a brilliant album from start to finish and the avocado is pretty good too, comatose is sucky.

i agree that riot act was a very good album.
it has songs that were very meaningful to me at that time in my life

i'm not as big as a fan of the avocado as i am of riot act but i do appreciate many of the songs on it, not all, but many
i'm sure there'll be many on the new album i appreciate as well

I've heard and seen a lot of strange things in my day, but this takes the cake. Riot Act and brilliant in the same sentence? I feel like my universe just tilted ;)

No Code was brilliant. Ten. Vs. Vitalogy. Yield. Maybe even Lost Dogs. But Riot Act?

Comatose does suck though. God I hate that song. Ed needs to stop trying to sing like that and replicate his vocals from Vs. They need to find a way to still rock that allows Ed to sing like he did on ITW and Benaroya.

i am very optimistic about the new record.

it will blow us all away on many levels.
    Nice shirt.
  • Has it become popular to declare love for Riot Act or something? Don't remember much love for it when it came out, but it seems like every other thread has a believer. I still think the first 6 or 7 songs off of the self titled, hold up to just about any 6 or 7 songs off other albums...oh, besides WWS.

6-8 songs does not make an album though, and that is what I want to see changed. If you are only going to record an album every 3-4 years, please leave the Big Wave's and Bu$hleaguer's off, let songs with lyrics by other members appear on their solo records.

I have high hopes for this album mainly because of ITW. I will hold off panic until I hear it.

Comatose is a really fun song to play from a guitarist's perspective...

Yeah, all I see is them laying around being lazy...they are always off at the awards shows and getting busted blowing thousands of dollars at the strip clubs...and then there's McCready getting pinched in Florida with the 1600 kilos of blow...I wish they'd put a webcam in their studio so we could watch them to make sure they are working hard to satisfy our needs....

LoL thats not what I meant.
I meant since Ed's doing this big solo tour thing how is he gonna work on it.
Unless theyre arleady finished recording it?

Also, they all seem to have their own little projects going on, maybe they are bored with Pearl Jam right now.

    I'm just teasing ya sport....

Pearl Jam has created and earned the opportunity and privelege of doing things at their own pace...it does come with age and experience...things change a lot as you get older with a band...some things just cannot be rushed...and I, for one think the new record will be exceptional....I really like all but 2 tracks on Avocado...and on most PJ records I like nearly all the tracks...how many other bands can we honestly say that about? No other bands even come close to that for me.... ;)

Yah I like all the tracks on Avocado I dont know why everyone says it sucks I thought Inside Job was reallyreally good.
Anyways I'm excited to hear some new news about the new album.

  • The only track I dislike is come back the rest is fine and I prefer it to Riot Act although my view of Binaural is changed and I think I prefer to the S/T.

Whatever they deliver I'm sure it will be fine, I'm not sure we can expect anything like Vs , Vitalogy or Yield again but who knows?

I heard shorter tracks mentioned and Brendan is back on board so that's always a good thing in my book. I've never found any of their albums lame, I think for me RA is their weakest and some like that the best.

They have always tried to make a good record and most of the time they always deliver something worthwhile.
I guess it comes down to what you expect from them, Vs and Yield are my favourites but I'm sure some PJ fans might hate those albums.

All of us don't want the same thing, so some of us will no doubt be satisfied when some will just be disappointed.

I agree with whoever said that "Into the Wild" got them optimistic about the next PJ record.

Although, as a band gets older the likelihood of them putting out a shitty album gets increasingly higher and higher.
