I have a question about Memphis, particularly the Cooper-Young area. I'm 24 female traveling alone. Is this a pretty safe area? So, I'll basically be taking a cab from the airport to a place in Cooper-young area and a cab to the theatre area (which is pretty safe). Is this a big deal? I've stayed alone overnight at places out of my hometown before, but this will be the biggest city I've gone to alone.
I surfaced and all of my being was enlightened.

    He did?? What bar??

I'm definitely trying for Memphis! I love Memphis, I used to live there, and most of my family lives there. I haven't been back in a few years and my grandfather wants me to come do a video biography of him and all his adventures all over town since 1925. Plus, I need to visit my great-grandmother in Arkansas. This would be a perfect opportunity to do all 3 things at once! I'd probably drive in from Albuquerque.

    *crosses fingers for tickets*

The bar was called Last Place On Earth. I dont know if its still there.

That is the coolest bar name!

Now I really want to win the Memphis lottery so I can go there. :D

Cooper Young area is not a safe place to be latley. People are getting robbed in that area. Its in Midtown. Right next to Orange Mound, not a safe place at all. Memphis is the most violent city in the US. I wouldnt walk down too many streets in Memphis. I live in the county 5 min. from the city. If you walk on Beal St. to drink dont go to far east on Beal, past the bars or you may end up with a axe in your head or rapped. Im not trying to freak anybody out but its the truth. Also alot of people try to start fights on Beal. Be safe have fun at the show.

Thanks for the tips. I'm going to be as careful as I can. The people on tripadvisor.com were saying I'll be OK and that most of the violence in in the bad parts of town and usually against people who know each other. I won't be walking around near the hostel where I'm staying, just going into the hostel I'm staying and coming out. I might walk around downtown and I hope there is some PJ fan get together like at some other shows before and/or after the show. I'm not a drinker and if I was I wouldn't drink if I were traveling alone.

But I thought Cooper-Young was the artsy section of town, is it really generally dangerous? Do you know anything about the Pilgrim Hostel that is affiliated with the First Congregational Church?

    Thanks again!

  • I was wondering when someone was going to bring up Memphis's crime rate.

I would stay downtown & travel in pairs after dark.

Cooper Young is an artsy area. A few good places to eat also in that area. People have been getting robbed when they come out of resturants, so be careful walking around in that area. You should be fine. Downtown has gotten much safer. The Orpheum Theater is a block from the river. Its a very nice place to watch the sun set You can go watch the sunset on the Peabody rooftop, its very nice. Also right around the corner from the Orpheum Theater there is the Gibson guitar factory. You can stand outside and watch guitars being made, and tour it and check out the lounge. Peabody place is also ok. Good places to eat downtown would be Hueys, its a small place that has great food, and a great vibe, they always play Pearl Jam (B side stuff, the songs you dont hear on the radio) and if you go take a marker with you because you can write on the walls. Charles Vergos' Rendezvous is great for Memphis bbq, also Corkys. I cant think of anymore places but if I do I will post them. Sorry I dont know anything about Pilgrim Hostel. In the downtown area dont go to far east and south of Beal and you will be fine.

Thank you. I love going to places knowing ahead of time about it. I love the internet :) I'll be on a very tight budget, so I'll probably only walk around downtown and take the trolley. I gotta save up for the PJ tour, what can I say?

I signed up a few hours ago after spending a Wed evening, Thursday and some of today figuring out if I should go to Atl or Memphis and costs and all that. I decided on Memphis even though is is father than central Florida because I found cheap lodging. I do have to save up for the fall tour although I HAD to go to this tour because it would have been one of my biggest regrets if I hadn't. I seriously thought the last east coast tour would be the last and was seriously kicking myself for not having any money at the time. This will be a big deal for me too on a personal level as I've gone through some personal things and hadn't been able to see PJ or EV since Oct 2004. This is sort of my getting out of "hidding" thing and it will be incredibly liberating for me in so many ways.

Ok, I am so very excited as I really love the slower acoustic stuff of PJ's more. This will be great because listening to so many PJ boots I've always wanted to see an acoustic show. I also want to see Liam Finn as what I've heard so far is good. (listen to 'Second Chance-live" http://www.last.fm/music/Liam+Finn/_/Second+Chance)

    That hurt......cold...so cold...

and now that Coach Cal is gone I doubt we'll be seeing another final four in the near future.
  • What I tell folks when they visit and go downtown is to find the FedexForum and use it as a landmark. The Forum is in the northwest corner of the 3rd poorest zipcode in the country, so being south of the Forum is pretty dangerous. Beale Street is north of the Forum, and on a saturday there will be tons of police out.
  • heading to memphis, bought plane ticket and booked hotel (westin on beale) yesterday

can't wait going to be a great weekend

I know the gibson guitar factory is across the street, can anyone suggest anything else that is close (walking distance) in terms of bars or things to do

    thanks

Good for you and good luck, I hope you win one of lotteries or get tickets from ticketbastard. I have had family and money issues and haven't been able to see anything JAMMYISH since July 2006. I really want to go to Memphis, but if I can't, I won't trip out too much.

I'm in quandry. If I don't win the lottery to one or both of the Memphis shows I would like to try with TicketMaster next Saturday. However, at 10:00 a.m. I will be out in the middle of the Southern Illinois boonies with my relay team running an 80 mile relay. I bet half of the time I won't even have a phone signal. And with my luck, when I do it will probably be my turn to run at 10:00 a.m.

I was also going to try to get tickets to the Nashville show through Ticketmast. Doesn't sound like any of that will pan out. I told my husband last night Ed will be in Nashville and Memphis and I probably won't even get to go. I know, I know, I am whining....... and I don't even know I lost yet. What a Debbie Downer, huh?

Thanks so much for the info! I lived in Memphis before I was an adult, so I'm not too familiar with the bars.

Man, I sure wouldn't want to be rapped! I don't think it would be as bad as being raped, but it still sounds unpleasant. ;)

Ha! I was thinking he really meant rapped. I was trying to figure out what that was. I thought maybe it was some urban term that a So. Il. redneck wouldn't understand! ha!

By the way my husband and I visit Memphis often since it is one of the three "big cities" that we live closest to. I am a wanderer and have walked and ran, and even ridden bikes in a lot of areas there. I have never had a problem BUT I was often told after the fact that I shouldn't have been in the places I was. That being said, I would get people who know more about Memphis than me to comment on the area south of town along the bluff. That is where I often go to run when I am visiting Memphis in that nice neighborhood along the bluff and down in the park, what is it? Jefferson Davis Park? Isn't that safe? Doesn't Sybil Shepherd own one of those houses on the bluff?

  • I had a friend that lived up on that bluff with all the nice homes. She was car jacked not far from the gate. They found her body 2 days later in a ditch off of I-40.

I grew up just north of Memphis. I've really never been frightened while traveling there. All though, last year while visiting the Gibson factory a pan handler wouldn't leave me alone. Finally, a man walking down the sidewalk got the pan handler to walk off with him & to stop bothering me. I have had many friends have their purses stolen & another held at gun point for a gold chain (seriously). Both of these incidents happened in the parking lot just south of Beale. I just think a female needs to be careful in that area day or night.

Also, a great place to visit with in walking distance of Beale is the Civil Rights Museum & the Loraine Motel.

Christ on a cracker! Making me nervous about possibly visiting Memphis. But I still want to win the lottery. Hey, I'm from Detroit, I ain't skeered of Memphis. :?

Anyway, I'm glad you mentioned the Civil Rights museum and the Loraine Motel, I definitely want to check those out.

  • You'll be okay in Memphis "Whitepants". I've been to Belle Isle in Detroit. My bestfriend worked in Birmingham & I had nothing to do....so, Belle Isle looked really appitizing. She called me & told me that Belle Isle is a place I DID NOT need to be.
I wish I were the verb "to trust" and never let you down
