So let me ask all the Mets fans in this thread a question: What do you guys prefer, a good season overall with meaningful September baseball but finishing in a (historic) collapse, or a season that was over by the end of May?

I prefer this as I don't think I could handle another collapse. At least this year we have a legitimate excuse with the entire team being on the DL..we were in first before everyone started dropping and it would have been interesting to see how the season would have concluded. I'd imagine less blown games down the stretch with K-Rod, Putz and Wagner for sure..

I hear you. This year I think it was better for me to have a season like this than a collapse, because I couldn't handle that kind of heartbreak again. However, I think in general, its still much more fun to root for a good team even if they don't make the playoffs than to root for a team that just blows. But either way, this isn't really the Mets, so there wasn't really any team to root for this year.

Nah. Didn't you hear, they forfeited the rest of the season 2 weeks ago, the Phillies have a baseball free weekend coming up.

  • Met fans, meet the Real Gary Sheffield:

    http://www.nypost.com/seven/08202009/sp ... 185519.htm

Gary Sheffield's future with the Mets is up in the air.

The veteran slugger was a late scratch from tonight's lineup, and a high-ranking club source confirmed that Sheffield was threatening to leave the team after the Mets rejected his request for a contract extension.

Sheffield is in the final year of his contract and has expressed a desire to return to the Mets, who are paying him $400,000 this year while the Tigers pick up the remaining $13.6 million of his salary.

The Mets are not interested in an extension because Sheffield will be 41 next season and -- though still a potent hitter -- he has had trouble staying healthy as a position player in the National League.

The timing of Sheffield's request for an extension was curious because he told The Post earlier this week he didn't expect to finish the season with the Mets.

The Mets placed Sheffield on revocable waivers last week, and pulled him back after an unspecified team claimed him.

By pulling him back, the Mets are not allowed to trade Sheffield. The Mets' only option is to release Sheffield if they want to let him finish the season with a contender.

Neither Sheffield nor Jerry Manuel did much to clear up the situation before the series finale with the Braves at Citi Field, though Sheffield was in uniform and on the Mets' bench.

    FOLLOW GAME HERE

Manuel said Sheffield asked for "a day off to kind of clear some thoughts and things, but he's OK." But Sheffield told reporters shortly afterward he was scratched, he did not ask out of the lineup.

"I'm fine," Sheffield said. "It's just the best thing for today. It's just the best thing to let someone else play. I'm 100-percent healthy."

Manuel's regular pregame news conference was delayed nearly an hour while he and the Mets struggled to handle the standoff. Manuel then tried to downplay the situation with reporters.

"I think it would do him good both physically and mentally to get a day [off]," Manuel said.

Manuel, who was bench coach with the Marlins in 1997 when Sheffield helped lead Florida to a World Series title, earlier this month proclaimed his desire for the Mets to bring Sheffield back next season But management has not been as enthusiastic, even though Sheffield has been surprisingly productive this season.

Sheffield was hitting .286 with 43 RBIs in 88 games since being signed at the end of spring training. Sheffield also has been more durable than most, although he spent 15 days on the disabled list earlier this month with a right hamstring injury.

Even that was a point of contention; Sheffield had to be talked into going on the DL by Manuel while the Mets were in Houston. GM Omar Minaya had to get involved in that lobbying effort by way of a conference call with Sheffield and Manuel from New York.
  • More:

Gary Sheffield asked the Mets for a contract extension, the club rejected the oveture and now Sheffield has threatened to leave the team and head home, two sources told the Post.

As of 6:30 p.m., one of the sources said, Mets officials and Sheffield were in discussions on how to move forward. Mets pitcher Tim Redding actually said he heard Sheffield had been released. But a Mets official told the Post that was inaccurate and that Sheffield had not been released.

Sheffield had been part of the original lineup for Thursday night's game against the Braves. But Jerry Manuel said that Sheffield had pulled himself to clear his head.

  • I wouldnt be surprised at all if he struck out on purpose tonight. Like throwing balls int o the stands on purpose in milwaukee. The mets should have released him before he left the room

yeah i was actually a little unsure about it to be honest with you. i didn't know if they were going to be able to field a team. but if they did, would they just lay down and die and let us score a couple touchdowns on them like the braves did.

your poor mets fans. how do you live with yourselves these days? even the jeagler thought you'd be in it until mid september again....

Has the Jeagler had the opportunity to take a look at our lineup? I wonder how well the Phills would be doing if every single starter were on the DL...and thus makes the loss to a single A team even more pathetic..

well we'd probably do as well as we did against the mets the last two years.

    hey. oh.

...keep in mind, we've had our share of injuries and a closer who has forgotten how to close. but you guys have been killed with injuries this year, i know. but, it's part of the game. you were healthy in 07 and 08 and what do you have to show for it? just looking at it from a far, maybe this season is good for you though. you know, maybe they need to blow that team up and start over?

happy anniversary diehard Mets Fans .
Tonight should be nice out at the new Citifield.
Svoboda was all over the news this morning,
replaying " the catch " he made in the 69 series.

its always nice to see the Mets surprise us all sometimes,
and as a result set Phillies fans in their place .
Sometimes it all goes to their cocky little heads !

    :p

    jk--
    enjoy the game.
