Would you only miss/skip/quit work for PJ? Or would you do this for any band you liked?
I'm temping on medium terms assignments so it doesn't have the same impact than with a permanent job (and i have no mortgage and no kids), but I have done all 3 for PJ.

left early/skipped a day for tickets (not so much since the sales are AM PST), and quit for tours.
06 I ended up not turning up on a Monday after deciding after the Barcelona show (Saturday) to go to Lisbon :P... went back to work the following Tuesday (was already planned to have Thursday-Monday off for a wedding), completely quit by the end of that day to get to Italy  (had only planned to do Verona, did all of them in the end).
Lesson learned and 07 and 08 I simply planned to quit for the whole tour. Will do too this year.

My agency is very understanding about it

well, considering I am one of the bosses at my firm...I just shut my office door when I try for tickets.

Being a CPA, the April 15th deadline for taxes can be incredible. Everyone is nuts. So when PJ played Raleigh 4/15/03 I worked my ass off to be in the position to make that show. So by 11 am all my client work was complete so I hit the road for the 5 hour drive to the show. I did leave the lights and my computer on in my office so it LOOKED like I was around. Great back to back shows...Raleigh and Charlotte 2003.

One of my staff next to my office is a big fan and I got him to join the 10C. He puts up with the endless stream of PJ music coming from my office all day. I need to make sure he gets promoted...

Accountants aren't all boring. We even put togeather an office band (we do suck) and play our company picnic. We close with RITFW.
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of
arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to
slide in sideways, BBQ sandwich in one hand, cold beer in the other,
body thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and screaming "Woo Hoo what a
    ride"!

Would you all do such a thing?

What if you are scheduled to work on Wednesday at 9 am and tickets go on sale at 930. Would you just not go to work? Would you go late? Would you quit?

How about if your boss refused to give you time off for a show. Would you skip work that day and go anyway? Would you quit?

Alot of people might say, "Its only a band" or "its only music". But I think, there are many on this board, and many music fans in general who would argue, music is their life. i am obviously one of them. Read Ed's commentary on Pete Townshend. He too would agree.

I am not trying to suggest those who dont quit or dont skip work like the band more that than those who would miss the show or ticket sale. But how far would your obsession with the band or music go?

Would you only miss/skip/quit work for PJ? Or would you do this for any band you liked?

I booked a half day holiday just to sit at my home computer to get PJ tickets - does that count???

I have in the past skipped work and I would skip work again to buy tickets and go to concerts but I would never quit my job to go to a concert. That is a little too extreme. :)

i have taken sick leave to try for 10c tix, but i've never skipped out on work for an actual show. i think it's too risky. i just have to think back to the june 2008 MSG shows where i had a bad fall. i WAS on vacation at the time, but i then had to take a week of sick leave following to recover. yes, i did continue onwards to my other shows - on crutches - but there was no way i could do that, daily, with my commute, to/from work. if i had played hooky at work, i don't know HOW i'd ever explain my injury....and yes, i would feel to guilty. perhaps if i was 20, with little to no responsibilities with a crap-paying job.....sure. but being where i am in life right now.....no way. i have too much to lose being that irresponsible about my own, and my husband's, livelihood. i LOVE live pj, but certainly not enough to risk my own income, home, etc. i just make sure i always save vacation time - and i do get a generous amount....and i try to keep sick leave to a minimum as much as possible for those trying days of trying for 10c tix. i could do so from work...but given my cube environment, and how work sporadically flows...i far prefer trying from home, especially since oftentimes it can take hours.
    Stay with me...
    Let's just breathe...

I am myself like you somehow

  • I have taken a total of three days off for Pearl Jam, and once borrowed my boss' laptop for "an emergency" to buy tickets.
    I did that in 2007!! 8-)
Been to this many PJ shows: Reading 2006 London 2007 Manchester & London 2009 Dublin, Belfast, London, Nijmegen & Berlin 2010 Manchester 1 & Manchester 2 2012...

... and I still think Drive-By Truckers are better.

Yes, I have pretended to be very very sick many times in order to see/hear them live:D and I surely will as many times as needed:)

I wouldn't quit my job - but I would beg until someone switched with me...

I have skipped school multiple times to buy concert tickets (for PJ and other bands)

I missed three days of school to go to the LA eV concerts - one to fly out and even though I took the red eye home for Tuesday class I was so exhausted I had to sleep.

All this talk about a Fall tour has got me worried.. there's no PTO in your last semester of college.. I know I'm already going to be missing time traveling to go visit grad schools - maybe I can double dip a bit if it works out. :)

This is the advice that I always gave my kids when they were trying to decide whather to skip school in order to go to some special event: "What are you going to remember ten years from now -- being in class on that particular day, or being at that special event with your friends? Your answer should guide your decision."

I'm in a quandry now. If I don't win the lottery for my EV tickets in Baltimore, I want to be at my computer at 10 am on April 17th when the ticketmaster tickets go onsale. But I'm supposed to be at a meeting with lots of other people at that time. So do I ask that the meeting be postponed (and inconvenience all of those other people) or do I trust someone else to get my ticketmaster tickets for me?

I timed quitting my job last year and starting my new job around the summer PJ tour.

My last day was June 18th and I saw R.E.M. with a guest appearance by EV that night. Then saw the rest of the US tour from Camden through the Beacon and started my new job - July 7th.

    Worked out well. ;)

quitting work is a bit extreme... if you can't make a show because of work go to another show maybe on the weekend. I would say many of us have skipped work for a PJ show over the years.. I have moved my shifts around to cater for PJ shows.
I'm just flying around the other side of the world to say I love you

I've requested half-vacation days or personal days for PJ business. But I would never quit my job for PJ.
