PETA targets Seattle tradition: Pike Place fish throwers

PETA has taken a stand against one of the most popular tourist attractions in Seattle - the fish market at the Pike Place Market that tosses salmon.
PETA spokesman David Shirk says you would never see a mammal being tossed around, so why is it ok for a fish? "The fact that it's ok to do it with fish is kinda inconsistent."
PETA heard that the American Veterinary Medical Association planned a Pike Place Fish Market demonstration at next month's convention at the convention center.
PETA sent a letter to the association saying people who care about animals are appalled fish would be treated as toys. PETA believes veterinarians should show compassion.
"We're asking them to not engage in this pretty absurd fish toss," Shirk said, "and if they are bent on still doing it, PETA has offered to buy rubber fish for them to use instead."
An assistant manager at the Pike Place Fish Market, Justin Hall, says workers there respect fish because it's their livelihood and they take pride in having the best seafood.
Taho Kakutani has been tossing fish for four years, he says potential customers get into the tossing and the shouting, so they're sticking with it, but he did say "You know, I have nothing against PETA... really they're in support of life and really how can you, ultimately, disagree with them."
the fish are dead, no?
i mean, i understand that yea, most wouldn't go around throwing around dead cats or pigs.....eeewwwww. but given the fish are dead, wtf difference does it really make? i am all for respect, but i think this is taking it a wee bit too far. i think there are bigger fights to be fought for animal rights than dead fish throwing, but hey, that's just me...
Not perfect...they are far from it. The idea behind it is noble as are some of the actions, but as with many of these types of groups, they end up going crazy on us.

What mammal do Americans consume on a regular basis that could be tossed in such a manner????? Cows? Pigs? Deer? Elk? Goats? The only one that comes close is rabbit, but it is a fringe meat..as in it isn't consumed by a large percent of the population...ever heard of a "rabbit market"? Another dumb-ass statement from the group that leads the world in outrageous and stupid statements. PETA members have brains about as advanced and large as a fish.
All the world will be your enemy, Prince with a thousand enemies, and whenever they catch you, they will kill you. But first they must catch you, digger, listener, runner, prince with the swift warning. Be cunning and full of tricks and your people shall never be destroyed.
PITA apparantly has no members with gills since there is no outrage over Glen Beck who
Sliced a large fish, salmon I think from the chin all the way through the belly to the tail.
then took the dead animal and moved its mouth with a silly voice to demonstrate how silly politicians can be
then turned this animal over, showing its exposed insides... then tearing the spine out to show that fish have a spine while politicians did not seem to.
if it were a young girl gutted on television, people would be upset
if it were a kitten yes
but apparantly it a fish is not one of God's creatures, it is fine to mutilate them for fun in public.

PETA's done a lot of good. check out their wiki page.
i don't agree with everything they do, but most of what they've done has been a positive step for animal rights.
A University was testing car accident injuries on monkey's...they used to take a hammer to a live monkey's skull to test fractures and things like that-PETA put a stop to that.

stop
concur!!!
Sometimes it takes extreme gestures to realize that animals give their sacrifice. I think twice about my relationships with our four legged and marsipial friends since being exposed to PETA, but a while back it came to my attention that we as Humans, sometimes need fluids to live by, in such cases as Diabetes, or even a rattlesnake bite. I only hope and pray that people who are in the field, appreciate and love the sacrifice that is made by our friends. If one would say, " I am selecting you with high respect and forgiveness, because you are part of me and one day, I will be part of you. But because of your generosity, today may not be that day."
If nothing else, but to give thanks.
If someone is cruel to animal, they are certain to be cruel in other realms...peace.

I heard PETA's getting on Obama's case for swatting that fly during his interview. It's a fucking FLY!!! It's not like you can take it home with you, pet it and name it Charles.

WASHINGTON – The group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals wants the flyswatter in chief to try taking a more humane attitude the next time he's bedeviled by a fly in the White House.
PETA is sending President Barack Obama a Katcha Bug Humane Bug Catcher, a device that allows users to trap a house fly and then release it outside.
"We support compassion even for the most curious, smallest and least sympathetic animals," PETA spokesman Bruce Friedrich said Wednesday. "We believe that people, where they can be compassionate, should be, for all animals."
During an interview for CNBC at the White House on Tuesday, a fly intruded on Obama's conversation with correspondent John Harwood.
"Get out of here," the president told the pesky insect. When it didn't, he waited for the fly to settle, put his hand up and then smacked it dead.
"Now, where were we?" Obama asked Harwood. Then he added: "That was pretty impressive, wasn't it? I got the sucker."
Friedrich said that PETA was pleased with Obama's voting record in the Senate on behalf of animal rights and noted that he has been outspoken against animal abuses.
Still, "swatting a fly on TV indicates he's not perfect," Friedrich said, "and we're happy to say that we wish he hadn't."
Deputy press secretary Josh Earnest said the White House has no comment on the matter.
When I opened this thread I really thought it was going to be all about the fly, but I remember this little bit of info coming out about PETAs really high kill rate. It's true the members of PETA can be very passionate and sometimes extream and criminal. Overcrowding is a major problem, (I mainly blame humans for this.) but it seems ass backwards that they would put down so many animals for this reason. There are extremists in everything but sometimes they go to damn far. Doesn't a fly live for like 3 days? My karmic loop hole is to bless them to a higher existence thru prayers
I currently work at an animal shelter, and I can tell you right now that a 95% euthanasia rate is ridiculous, and if our shelter had a 95% euthanasia rate we'd all be fired. Our shelter doesn't have money for a vet on staff, xray machine, and many other things that are vital to a shelter, but we make do with what we have. I can guarantee you right now that if we had the budget that PETA has we'd probably have a 0% euthanasia rate.
It's funny that this thread is on here today because I had a really fucked up day because I had to euthanize a cat(at the end of the day to top it off) who about 5 days ago was a healthy cat. I felt really bad about doing it, and when I went to euthanize him he gave me a pitiful meow, and it broke my fucking heart. When I got home and told the story to someone else I couldn't help but cry. If our shelter had PETA's budget we could have saved that cat, but instead I come home feeling like a horrible person thinking that there may have been something else I could do(even though in reality, I could do nothing because our budget doesn't allow it). So fuck PETA for making me feel like a shitty person, and shame on them for spending their money foolishly. They should be ashamed.
Was waiting to see if someone from a shelter would be here and sorry to hear about the kitty. I hope you have less and less of that need in the future and that there was more I could do for you. I've known several people who work in shelters and for vets and almost all of them are there for the right reasons. Many are simply overwhelmed.
About 8 yrs old- the neighbor's stray had three kittens during winter... Another neighbor boy said "LOOK!" and the jackass drop kicked one.  My fist was in his face and my foot in his ass faster than he knew what to do with. I picked up all the kitties tucked them in my coat and told him not to fuck with me or cats again or I'd beat his ass worse. Luckily, life worked out that day. When I told mom what happened she for once agreed to something and let all three stay.

if i have to put up with them being concerned about flies if it means monkeys won't get hit on the head with hammers anymore, i'll take it. small price to pay.
Except every moment, uslessly spent bitching about fly swatting or fish throwing is a wasted moment that could have been spent trying to stop monkeys from getting hit in the head with hammers (or any other actual form of animal cruelty). It also kills their credibility, so that if tomorrow they were to issue a press release about something important (like monkeys getting hit with hammers) more people would dismiss it as more crazy crap from PETA.
Before founding PETA, Newkirk was chief of animal-disease control and director of the animal shelter in the District of Columbia.[76] She has said that she was shocked by the way the animals were treated in the shelter, and by the methods used to euthanize them. She told Michael Specter of The New Yorker: "I went to the front office all the time, and I would say, "John is kicking the dogs and putting them into freezers." Or I would say, "They are stepping on the animals, crushing them like grapes, and they don't care." In the end, I would go to work early, before anyone got there, and I would just kill the animals myself. Because I couldn't stand to let them go through that. I must have killed a thousand of them, sometimes dozens every day. Some of those people would take pleasure in making them suffer. Driving home every night, I would cry just thinking about it. And I just felt, to my bones, this cannot be right."[80]
The nerve of her.

whatever the details, i'm glad PETA is around. they may be wasting their time, but that' isn't always the case. i think its about sensationalism, the very popular president swats a fly, they try to save the flys, trying to stay relevant, even if its a worthless cause.
