I am glad they won't. I don't want them to become "Stones" or "U2". And any die-hard fan who knows about this band, will know I mean "commercially".
pearl jam tried their damdest to be commercially successful last tour....

any die hard fan would know that.....
and any die hard fan would know the 06 tour was there worst ever. i hope to god they dont promote this new cd like they did with the self titled. although i think j/sony/epic had alot do to with the promoting of the self titled. i dont see this happening seeing at all nor do i want it to happen.

OMG I'd sooo be there if PJ opened up for U2...that said I dunno that it will happen since PJ has no new album in the near future. I'm hearing the Summer rumours, but nothing from here as of yet so I everything I've heard till know I'm taking with a grain of salt.
From where? I posed a A Toronto summer tour rumour yesterday. Isn't Toronto your "here"?

Eddie, on the other hand, is completely different story?

I wonder if some U2 fans hate Pearl Jam for the same reasons some Pearl Jam fans hate U2...wouldn't that be a trip?

What, other than being commercially successful their entire career, has U2 done that makes them SOOOO much different that Pearl Jam?

I'd be done for some U2/PJ shows any day.

Last I heard Eddie never ruined an all time classic in one of his rants but trying to lead the crowd in a whole Muslim=Christian=Jew and that we all all the same during the End of Sunday, Bloody Sunday or never blindfolded himself on stage and searched it by crawling around on it for some imaginary fire to keep him warm to show the plight of homelessness.

Let's put it this way, I saw U2 for the first time in Honolulu when PJ opened for them and seeing that concert made me never to want to see U2 live again. I still have not been able to listen to Sunday, Bloody, Sunday since.

God I hope PJ never opens for U2 again.

You're right, he just ruined about a dozen classics in 03 by bringing Corrin Tucker onstage ;)

You're right. But having never seen them live before and being used to the PJ format of music, occasional Ed rant, music, I kind of pictured U2 would be the same and not as theatrical. It just seemed really absurd but
I guess casual fans of PJ think the same thing when they see us act out during DTE for example.

I was referring to all the promotional activity. Not the shows themselves. Then of course we had the whole Verizon thing last Summer. I don't want to get into that right now since it has already been discussed to death. Overall though, more limelight is not necessarily a good thing.

I wouldn't mind having Pearl Jam open up for U2 at Gillette Stadium since I am going to be there anyway. 8-)

YUK!! U2 smells like hot garbage...

Rule Number 1 when choosing an opening band. Don't choose one that rocks more than you do :)

I've seen U2 on the last 3 tours. And all I can really say is they seem pretty inconsistent with their live shows. Some are pretty good and some not so good.

I seriously think pearl jam has alot more consistentcy. Even on a bad night they still kick alot of ass. And pearl jam's music is a little harder than u2's, so u2 coming on after pearl jam might seem really mellow.

So I don't see it opening. I've never seen a good opening band for u2. And they'res a reason, they don't want to be outdone :)

Nice to see that U2 is trying to take care of their fans, although not quite as well as PJ.

Tour pre-sale info came out today. Unique pre-sale codes for members, three levels
of access based on seniority and a limit of 4 tickets for one show on the tour. It won't
keep the scalpers completely at bay, but at least the ones who purchased memberships
just for this tour will go to the back of the line.

They'll begin their tour in Europe, so plenty of time to work out a PJ pairing in the U.S.

When I first saw U2, they were much in the vein of what we get from Pearl Jam, just the 4 guys playing music. Once they got huge and football stadiums were gonna become the norm for their shows, the shows changed from straight ahead rock shows to as Speedy would say something more "theatrical". So the blindfold thing as Speedy says, is just part of the show these days. The first version of this was ZooTV, which was visually spectacular, truly groundbreaking stuff. Now as a long time fan my criticism of that tour was that the spontanaiety of the setlists disappeared as the show was tied in to the video screens.
Actually on the Vertigo tour (at least in Boston) there was a touch more flexibility in the setlist. The basic bones of the list were the same night in and night out, but they varied a little each night. (They aren't PJ, lets face it few bands are that spontaneous). In fact on my birthday in 2005 (Dec 4) they played Boston and someone held a sign from the GA saying "Bono be more spontaneous with the setlists" or something to that effect, Bono grabbed the sign, tore it in half and said "how's that for spontaneous"...quite funny. But they also proceeded to do their only 3 encore show of the tour that night, ending with the Bonus track "Fast Cars" from the deluxe version of HTDAAB, something only die hards would appreciate. (akin to PJ closing with something like "Brother").

At the end of the night, theatrics and lights/video aside, I've yet to be disappointed with a U2 show musically, and I've seen them 22 times.

Thats for Europe, in the US you can buy a total of 4 tix to up to 4 shows. (A pair each for 2 shows, 4 singles for 4 different shows for example).

Well, I don't think you can actually say "Chicago doesn't mean squat" but no, Pearl Jam is way too big to open for U2.

I don't believe PJ is too big to open for U2. They just opened for Rolling Stones recently and U2 is as big or bigger than RS. Plus I think U2 would want a "established" band like PJ versus a "smaller" like KOL in a stadium versus an arena because I know someone like me won't go to a U2 stadium show unless a PJ caliber band is the opening act. Just the thought of Ed singing Sort of Homecoming again is enough for me.

I really like their new song "No Line on the Horizon"..
  • God, I hope not. U2 is such a whiny annoying band. I sometimes wonder if Disney writes their lyrics. But, I do think it is "somewhat" good as to what Bonno is doing in his charity work...

  • Ummmmm....U2 should open up for them.
