Eddie, on the other hand, is completely different story?

I wonder if some U2 fans hate Pearl Jam for the same reasons some Pearl Jam fans hate U2...wouldn't that be a trip?

What, other than being commercially successful their entire career, has U2 done that makes them SOOOO much different that Pearl Jam?

I'd be done for some U2/PJ shows any day.

I gotta laugh when people are critical of how U2 promote themselves, yet the same people would LOVE to see PJ on Letterman 5 nights in a row.

    I love PJ + U2 and I don't like Coldplay :o

pearl jam sell out soldier field?????

    50,000 seats????

    not in a million years.......................

I think the point D is trying to make is that if PJ had shamelessly self promoted for the last 10-14 years like U2 has instead of stepping back from the limelight, you know made videos and ipods and all that commercial crap that it is plausible that, yes, they would be able to sell out 50,000 seat stadiums like soldier field, he is not saying they could.

    Correct!

and what i am saying is...

pearl jam could have done all the self promoting they wanted to in the last 10-15 years....

they still would not be able to sell out 50,000 seats....

other than their obsessed fan base....most people think pearl jam fell off the planet 10 years ago...

    1. It's a matter of choice and I don't fault either band for doing what's right for them.

    2. As for "shameless", I don't think U2 should be ashamed at all for their self-promotion.
    See point #1.

I don't think it is that bad of thing when they do it on a special occasion every now an then, U2 in Hawaii or the Stones In Pittsburgh.
...got a mind full of questions and a teacher in my soul...
  • U2 should return the favor and open up for Pearl Jam. Remember when 10-club had the special offer to go see the PJ/U2 show in Hawaii, U2 made extra $$ from the PJ fans. Now PJ should make a litte extra from U2, just don't frig with our fan club tickets. ;)

I don't think it would happen. I know they opened in Hawaii, but that was kind of a special little thing cause they were both there at the same time. I don't see PJ opening for U2 in any main big US shows like that. I guess if they owed U2 a favor or something, but kind of doubt it.

One more vote for the new U2 album sucking. They gave way too much control to Eno & Lanois on this one. Songs 2 & 3 are pretty good, and the rest is either lame (Get On Your Boots...they put the 3 worst songs right in the middle of the album), or fucking boring. Not a fan after the first few listens.

Well, that "obsessed fanbase" must be huge then since every time they play, it is costing us our firstborns and right arm and leg to get half way decent tickets. So, don't easily dismiss the idea that Pearl Jam can't sell out stadiums. That said, I hope they never ever play stadiums again!

Pearl Jam struggled to sell out the dozen arenas they played in '06, and that was after their biggest single since Last Kiss, 20% of the seats blanketed off for being obstructed view or on the far side of the stage, and a diehard fanbase that tours with them to multiple shows. PJ would never sell out Soldier Field again.

Also, U2 is not the only band to get awards for career accomplishments rather than actually great albums. Eric Clapton won for MTV Unplugged? Nirvana's Unplugged was a bigger and better album, didn't win shit. And Clapton has done better work in his career (Layla? Cream?). Bob Dylan doesn't win for Highway 61 or Blonde on Blonde, but he wins for Time Out of Mind? PJ wins for stbc, but not Alive, or Jeremy, or Daughter? Mind your words man... PJ hasn't even gotten nominated for shit since Vitalogy, but already you can see the geezer factor creeping in... how many awards did Ed get nominated for for Into the Wild? Give it another decade... PJ will release some sort of laid back, slick, safe affair like U2 and Dylan did, it will get the shit played out of it and clean up at awards shows. It's coming...

Rolling Stone cover story (which they said would never be done again), headlining a few festivals, giving the single away for free, their own commercials.

Gotta say though, it's easy to hate U2 for all that shameless self-promotion with the ipods. They didn't take any money for the ad and used the proceeds on the U2 ipods to benefit AIDS measures in Africa... what a bunch of self aggrandizing bastards!

I am glad they won't. I don't want them to become "Stones" or "U2". And any die-hard fan who knows about this band, will know I mean "commercially".

I think they are commercially successful - just not in the same league as U2 (I'm talking commercially not artistically.)

Really, Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby are crap? You guys crack me up.

For one thing, U2 didn't get a cent for doing the iTunes commercials? It was done to promote legal downloading. Do your research. Not sure how that's selling out.

As far as promoting their new album, what do you expect? They've just poured everything into making a new album. They want people to hear it and everyone seems to be scrambling to get them on their shows.

When Avacado came out, I couldn't change the channel without seeing TV ads for the album, Pearl Jam on SNL, the band doing Storytellers.

    Which I thought was great.

It's called promotion. ANd the new U2 album is amazing. Best track: Moment of Surrender.

I love Pearl Jam, but they are not too big to open for U2.

In 1992, they were arguably the biggest and in the world and they still opened for U2 in Europe. I would live to see it happen again.
I agree with all of this except one thing:
"Magnificent" is the best song on the album. Moment of Surrender is a tad too slow tempoed, saved by Edge's solo from 5:00-5:25.

Last I heard Eddie never ruined an all time classic in one of his rants but trying to lead the crowd in a whole Muslim=Christian=Jew and that we all all the same during the End of Sunday, Bloody Sunday or never blindfolded himself on stage and searched it by crawling around on it for some imaginary fire to keep him warm to show the plight of homelessness.

Let's put it this way, I saw U2 for the first time in Honolulu when PJ opened for them and seeing that concert made me never to want to see U2 live again. I still have not been able to listen to Sunday, Bloody, Sunday since.

God I hope PJ never opens for U2 again.
