SHUT UP. Like the band needs you to defend them?????
It's a fucking game. Not even put out by them.

the way i see it is if you don't like it, don't play it.
if you don't want it, don't buy it.
this applies to pretty much everything that this band or any other band does. whether it's promo stuff, posters, bootlegs, stickers, etc. if it annoys you, then leave it alone.

I totally agree. People should just stop bitching. Nobody is forcing you to play the game or buy any merchandise! Get a life people!
Yeah...this was a Sony/Epic thing, not a band thing. So they really aren't involved with this other than having to go along with someone else's promotion scheme....that's business for ya....
Lots on here have enjoyed it. If you like games I guess it's pretty fun. As others have said, if you don't like it don't play.
"I'd rather be with an animal." "Those that can be trusted can change their mind." "The in between is mine." "If I don't lose control, explore and not explode, a preternatural other plane with the power to maintain." "Yeh this is living." "Life is what you make it."
Although I'm in complete disagreement with all the marketing stuff going on with this re-release, I know Sony is the one pushing this stuff forward. As such, I'm not worrying too much about it. As far as this "game" goes, although it is a bit of a pain to run in google chrome, so I switched to firefox, the music is actually pretty cool. The songs range from live versions like SOLAT, to a live partially acoustic version of even flow, to the remix of once. Give it a shot, some interesting stuff.
this is SONY cashing in. not the band, not the 10Club. why is this so hard for some people to see?
to be fair - the band is going to make a lot of money of this reissue. And to be fair, they are going above and beyond to promote it and to provide a ton of different venues to buy it.
I'm not offended by it and really don't care so much, but I also can't say there's no truth to those who say these gimmicks (the game, etc) are odd. It's like the Verizon sponsorship from the last tour... its not the same band that made Letterman give them a sponsor free slot on his show. But that's not the worst thing in the world either.

This is a comment that invariably comes up in every discussion, and I'm getting pretty tired of it. We're all here to discuss the band, that's the only reason for this board. I understand what you're trying to say and even want to agree with you, but telling others to stifle their opinion just makes you look like an ass instead of making a valid point to counter their argument.

But here's the thing. In this situation, if you're interested in validity, I'd say the argument itself is invalid, due to the fact that the likelihood of the band being the pushing factor for all this marketing is slim to none. The more likely scenario is that Sony/Epic is trying to make some more money. I don't know how to find out, but I'd be willing to bet that the pearljamtengame.com domain is owned by Sony/Epic, rather than Pearl Jam. That said, I think, as far as "horrible marketing ploys" go, I think it was a fun and creative way to market the reissue. Even if the band was responsible, I have nothing against them "selling out to the man" to make some money. Making quality music for nearly twenty years entitles a band to make money, too. I'm a bit tired of people who think the only good artists are the ones that are starving, a bit naive when we're all living in a capitalist society.

It's getting harder and harder to defend this band I swear to god.
I totally get what this guy means. He's not complaining like he's forced to play this game or whatever. He's complaining about the fact that when lame shit like this is associated with the band, people, friends, whoever (all of whom know that PJ's your favorite band and like to bust your balls about it) will give him a hard time and it's hard to defend the band.
Like when Riot Act came out. Tons of my friends were like "Pearl Jam? How can that be your favorite band? Their first 3 albums were good, but that's it! And their new album is TERRIBLE!!!" And it's hard to defend anything with lack of recent evidence to point to.

I agree. I think the game is pretty cool in that I get to hear the remixed and live tracks. It's a creative way for us to preview the re-release. Also, I dig the how they, whether Sony or the band, are promoting the hell out of this thing by pretty much giving us the the remixed and unreleased stuff for free. If I were the just the casual listener I honestly wouldn't buy the re-release despite their marketing efforts. But then again I very, very rarely buy music; torrents...

in my opinion, i'm not the one that sounds like an ass here. the OP didn't say that it is SONY that is pushing this so hard, he called out the band.
i was just making the point that if you're going to say something, have your facts straight. but i guess that makes me an ass???

Great, if stone sees this post we are fucked!
"wahhhhhhh my favorite band has a free interactive online game ...wahh"
seriously? its a game....
besides, if i mention pearl jam to people that have just met me, they still go "oh, is that band still around?" i've also gotten "isn't that the band where the singer killed himself?" so obviously those "marketing ploys" really ARE doing their job. how many people know about this game? the people on here so.... at most, 150, 200 people? no matter what sony does, pearl jam is not going to be as relevant as they were in the early 90s. grunge is over (which is what people associate pearl jam with) and more and more people are listening to hip hop and rap. so if pearl jam decided to be more like kanye west (ha!) then maybe people will turn their heads. but for now i think it's safe to say that the only people who actually know about these things are all pretty much right here. and have you noticed that the only guitar hero/rock band songs that are out are all on ten? the only one that isn't is life wasted and it was covered. and seriously, who the hell is gonna buy Ten for rock band? (i mean besides us freaks and those people who will buy every edition of rock band out there.) i'm sorry, but its neither relevant nor is it such a stunning, fantastic piece of music that you'd be crazy not to own.
also... people evolve. if pearl jam was still the pearl jam from 20 years ago, that'd be pretty pathetic in my book. so what if theres more marketing today? maybe they didn't want marketing before because they, as they themselves have stated (i'm pretty sure they have, correct me if i'm wrong), were too immature and inexperienced to handle fame and didn't want to be in the spotlight. fast forward 20 years. they're not popular anymore. they will never be that popular again (i'm pretty sure of myself). and as i've said, i'm not too sure sony with all their "marketing ploys" will ever make them that popular again. theyre just not appealing to this generation of hip hoppers. plus, their music doesn't reach out to many people because of their lack of use of hooks and noticeable choruses and their experimental sounds and deep lyrics. i think sony can pretty much do whatever, it ain't gonna work.
and besides, who CARES if they use marketing ploys? what should really matter is how their music effects your heart and soul, how pearl jam can make your worst feelings go away in an instant, how you can connect with other people who feel the same way and just "get it".
wow.. that really wasn't supposed to be a rant, i swear
