I hadn't really considered this at all. Funny to think that after taking a pass on Europe for six years Pearl Jam has been here the past two summers now. While we may not get them this summer as well, it may not be as far off as we might otherwise believe.

    good point!

add to that festivals that pays them good money for minimal organisational husstles and less overhead (no need to get your stage around, so less crew, less trucks).

and of course there's the athmosphere ;)

now we all have a reason to want the dollar to stay weak :D

lets just call it as it is, theyre never ever ever going to play the south again.
Whereas we will have Bi-annual European tours in summertime (my educated predictions)! WOHOOO, europe is the land of milk & honey

pinkpop 2008 , rage against the machine, foo-fighters, and high on the list PJ...but because the german festivals havent made their minds up about contracting pj, its to expensive for pinkpop to make a decision right know....

This is interesting actually. I had originally read somewhere that Radiohead were going to do a US tour before a European one. The reality meanwhile is that the Europe tour has been announced and tickets have gone on sale. I'm sure there will still be some sort of US tour in the cards but since this issue goes both ways, ticket prices will likely be steep.

  • i am not from the south so i have no vested interest in it, but i do hope for the south this is unture. while financially it certainly does make sense, i am sure other factors get weighed in, especially for a band such a pj. also, it seems to b=me they are taking a well deserved break, so who knows where the dollar will be when they are ready to tour again? it's all pure speculation on anyone's part as to when/where pj will tour next. i hope however it plays out, the south gets some well-deserved shows...and that pearl jam continue onwards wherever they enjoy and all have a blast. :)

doing a festival tour would probably work out cheaper alright. In Europe, PJ would have the potential to play: Electric Picnic, Oxegen, Leeds/ Reading, V Festival, T in the Park, Glasto, Pinkpop, Novarock, Rock am Ring, Rock im Ring, Frequency, Graspop, Hurricane, Southside, Rock Wercheter... and these are just the major ones I can think of at the mo!

Are there no festivals in the states??

Many "famous" folks are negotiating their deals with Euros instead of dollars now.

Last summer I thought this was one of the reason they headed back to Europe to do some performer-friendly festivals.

    I wouldn't mind 3 years in a row, or 4..
6 years was long to see them again.

I read about Rage and Foo Fighters too, but not that PJ was in the picture too, would be an even better line-up and a reason return to Landgraaf.

those they played this year (or last), so no chance.
I would hate them for playing Glasto (though I want to go next year..unless I got to Bonarroo :p), because even if I got ticket, many people wouldn't..as a community, we'd be srcewed!

and I sure hope they don't play the shit that is the V festival!
T in the Park would fit though (want to do that one too anyway ;))
there's other festivals..Benicassim, several ones in Scandinavia (that they painfully ignored the last 2 years!!), pukklepop...

US has festivals, but asside from Lolla, Bonaroo, Coachella, and South by Southwest and the new one in Jersey I think.. for the size of the country.. I mean we have more famous ones in the UK alone!

I hope they come back (and festivals being at weekends, they'd fit some solo dates like this year ;))..but my wallet probably won't be able to make another festival tour so soon!

the pukkelpop line-up the last two years was brilliant, was gutted i couldnt go this year. Apart from Hovefestival (Which looks like amazing craic), Roskilde and Hulstfred are there any other scandanavian festivals?

Heard a little rumor about Radiohead, WPB and a Saturday in early May.

    Hove Festival (Tromøy, Norway)
    Quart Festival (Kristiansand, Norway)

I thought they'd do one last year..seeing as they had ignored scandinavia in 2006 and lots of Swedes followed the tour.

I'm considering going to pinkpop though I've already got a ticket for Rock AM Ring. It was the first euro date RATM announced so I bought it as soon as I heard. For all I know it may have been the only date they would announce and if I held out for another festival and they didn't play it? Well, put it this way, remember that scene in Total Recall when arnie got outside and his face exploded? My reaction would have been similar :)
I'm hoping the foo's play Rock AM Ring, the new material is fantastic.

Its wierd every time I hear american artists or concert goers talk about the difference in euro and american festivals they almost all say the euro festivals are much better in terms of atmosphere etc. I'd love to know what it is about us festivals that makes so many people hold that opinion

    ain't just the festivals buddy.

frankly I was shocked how tame people were at Lolla!
I had more room around me (front barrier) than at virtually any regular show I've ever attended.
you act at GA shows like if you still were having your own little reserved seat space (even the Vic compared to the Astoria...whole different world)

plus we treat festivals as a huge party (well, they ARE a huge party..esp as camping ones are the rule, not the exception), the music is only part of it.

RATM aside thats the thing I'm looking foward to the most about Rock AM Ring, hanging out and having a laugh with different people, hell its what made this summers pj tour so much damn fun. Hope its nice sunny weather, the idea of hanging out on the grass in the morning in th campsite is something I'm looking foward to.
What about you, ever been to Rock AM? I'm curious about the atmosphere and the organisation compared to some of the other euro festivals.
