Back from the shore. It was good to be forced to ge away after that farce.
Fixer, who was right about everything, said the Phils would destroy the Cards in the div series. And the bullpen, which was terrible, gave up I think one meaningless run the whole series.
Cliffy, the Yanks still had a significantly higher payroll than the Phillies so I don't see how you can "rub it in". :?
Don't underestimate Ruben. He will retool the bats. Will still have great pitching next year. But, yes, this team blew a golden opportunity. I'm sure they are all kicking back on a beach already.Spectrum 10/27/09; New Orleans JazzFest 5/1/10; Made in America 9/2/12; Phila, PA 10/21/13; Phila, PA 10/22/13; Baltimore Arena 10/27/13; Phila, PA 4/28/16; Phila, PA 4/29/16; Fenway Park 8/7/16; Fenway Park 9/2/18; Asbury Park 9/18/21; Camden 9/14/22; Las Vegas 5/16/24; Las Vegas 5/18/24; Phila, PA 9/7/24; Phila, PA 9/9/24; Baltimore Arena 9/12/24; Pittsburgh 5/16/25; Pittsburgh 5/18/25

and our gold glove centerfielder dropping a tough but catchable fly ball
and the greatest baserunner we have ever had and your man crush make an boneheaded disasterous base running mistake in a one-run game

and our 4 aces giving up something like 17 hits to 3 fucking scrubs in 5 games

It could be another 25 years before the phils get the opportunity they blew the last two years (especially with so much dead money tied up to howard). It sucks and I'm frustrated. sorry for saying so
this is definitely one case where it was not fun being right
dude ... there are no guarantees in most sports, especially baseball ... anything can happen in the playoffs ... especially a best of 5 series ... all you can really hope for is a chance ... it's like tiger woods says - all he wants is a chance on sunday ... you guys gave yourself that chance ... brought in a big bat at the trade deadline and went with what you got you into the post-season ... the cards were no pushovers ... they lost pujols and holliday for chunks of the season which put them where they are ... but they are somewhat healthy now so, they were gonna be a tough matchup ...
exactly.
some people in this town are spoiled by 2008. fixer likes to make fun of the new bandwagon fans but he acts just like them. it's hard to win a world series. 08 was the exception to the rule, not the norm. every season doesn't end in a parade down broad street. that is all the more reason to appreciate what you have and enjoy the ride. those that did, got some joy out of this season, despite the huge disappointment at the end. i love baseball too much not to enjoy 102 wins. people like the fixer were miserable. then again, he's seemed miserable since he started posting in here a couple years ago.to me, life's too short for that shit.
whatever. just admit that you were wrong about this team. You were waving your pom poms and talking shit in all the other threads all year. now you act like one of the biggest chokes in MLB playoff history not a big deal (the phils were -360 in this series...you just don't see favorites that large in MLB playoffs)
meanwhile I just said that this team's lineup sucked since day 1. and their bullpen wasn't good enough. and the manager is an idiot. all of which were proven true in the playoffs. but I speak the truth and I'm miserable.
what do you think of the ryan howard contract now?

on to the future.
Madson the only free agent i would even consider bringing back even though i think the price is going to be too much. can always find a stop gap closer. also need another lefty in the bullpen.
Rollins I'm patting on the back but letting him walk. This team must get younger. Strap Galvis in at short. Defense and pitching will carry this team to 90 wins so don't worry too much about his offense just yet. Rollins offensive philosophy will not work with the others in this lineup. we need to mix in some speed and someone who will take some pitches once in awhile. rollins not that player.
Polanco probably needs to be replaced but nobody is taking him so at best he needs to be an 80-90 game player. plug him in at 3rd and 2nd at times. the bench needs a serious upgrade. one thing about the cardinals is they at least had 25 major league players on their roster. phils bench just not good enough. we need to get quality bench players to rest our aging players. polanco and utley have got to sit more. and charlie needs to learn to do that.
left field has got to be a younger speedier player. mayberry will most likely start the season playing some 1st. like the galvis comment above we need to get younger and faster.
there are only 2 tradeable commodities in the starting 8 in victorino and utley but i highly doubt they are going anywhere.
charlie needs to grow some balls and sit some of his veterans more and take halladay and lee out early to mid-season when they've thrown a ton of pitches. way too many games where those guys were throwing 120-130 pitches too early in the season.
obviously, for at least a few months next year, we will find out once and for all how easy it is to drive in runs from the 4th hole on this team. i suspect no one will come close to the production we have gotten over the past 7 years.
with the pitching this team will win enough games to be in the race next year with almost anyone at short and left. have to take a bit of a step back a bit. get younger and faster at those positions and hopefully get hot come playoff time.0 -

But we won the ring in 2008. I'm satisfied for the next decade or two after that. Of course I'd love to see them win again and this year seemed like as good an opportunity as any. But I will NOT turn into a Red Sox-type fan who thinks I'm owed championships. Remember how all they ever wanted was to see their team win one championship? That's all every Red Sox fan ever wanted. Then they win two and suddenly the fans think they're the 1950's Yankees who should win every year. That's what our fans are turning into: post-2004 Red Sox fans. I understand we have a great team and I understand that if you have the best regular season record, no matter what sport it is, and lose in the first round of the playoffs, you've choked. Okay so they choked. Big deal. At least they don't flat-out suck like the Eagles.2000: Camden 1, 2003: Philly, State College, Camden 1, MSG 2, Hershey, 2004: Reading, 2005: Philly, 2006: Camden 1, 2, East Rutherford 1, 2007: Lollapalooza, 2008: Camden 1, Washington D.C., MSG 1, 2, 2009: Philly 1, 2, 3, 4, 2010: Bristol, MSG 2, 2011: PJ20 1, 2, 2012: Made In America, 2013: Brooklyn 2, Philly 2, 2014: Denver, 2015: Global Citizen Festival, 2016: Philly 2, Fenway 1, 2018: Fenway 1, 2, 2021: Sea. this team isn't changing much. ibanez will be replaced by a mayberry/brown platoon. galvis can't hit dude...no way they go into the season with him as their starting SS. Rollins has them by the balls. amaro loves overpaying for aging players past their prime (ibanez, polanco, howard), so I'm scared to see what he gives him.
I could care less about madson. Boras is his agent and he's gonna get overpaid (plus his wife hates philly). I'd let him walk. Maybe sign one veteran fringe closer type and a LH specialist (something they needed this year) and give the bullpen to the kids (schwimmer, defratus, stutes, rosenberg, etc).
Sign Pujols/Fielder or trade for Votto (who's apparently available with Yonder Alonso ready to play every day at 1B) to play first. Oh wait, we're stuck with $125 million of dead money at that position. Awesome.
Tell Oswalt thanks for nothing and decline his option. Worley is the 4th starter next year, Kendrick in the 5 spot. Get Hamels locked up long term (gotta figure he is their best trade chip with his contract expiring after 2012...that may be the only way to take another serious run with this core...remains to be seen what they could get for him, but I'm sure it would be big).
Bottom line is that it's hard to see this team being better than it was in 2011...and especially in 2010. Their star position players are another year past their primes and the bullpen could have more question marks than this year (which is a scary proposition). Other than the bullpen there is no discernible MLB ready talent in the minors...with their payroll capped out that means it's going to be tough for them to improve from what they currenly have.
At least they made the playoffs this year though. Apparently that's all that matters around here. Not sure when this became the Arizona Diamondbacks thread.0 -

that is why i think you have to let Rollins walk. no need to tie up salary and years in a player when your flexibility is already near zero and he has already lost a step. aging players get hurt too much, cost too much and some lose it really quickly. i don't see how signing jimmy will be a good deal. and even if galvis can't hit a lick all i need is good defense with this pitching to still be a contender for a division title. and if he isn't the answer yet than get a stop gap shortstop. as we saw in the playoffs scrubs like ryan theriot can be effective at times. love jimmy for what he has done here but i just don't see anyway how paying him 12-14 million per year for a minimum of 3 years is going to be a good deal for this team (and yes i know your feelings on the other contract but not a fucking thing can be done about that).0 -

Game 3 the bullpen allowed 2 runs as well. Like I said all year, they had 1, maybe 2 reliable RPs for the playoffs. Anyone want to argue that point?0 -

so now you agree that howard and his contract suck?
their lineup scored some runs against teams like the marlins and mets and everyone was led to believe that they were good. All you had to do was watch the games and you would have realized that wasn't the case.
but it's OK...they made the playoffs (I really can't believe people are saying that)0
