Allie, I read about this all the time. I just don't understand it at all.

whoa. I don't remember that at all. But I grew up on L.I.
Maybe they didn't publicize it out there, or if they did I don't remember it. What an amazing thing and how scary that must have been for her. That is my worst nightmare, I try to avoid standing near the edge of the subway at all costs.
That article is such a time capsule...they don't list addresses like that anymore, and a photo lab? Folks today have no idea about dropping your film off at the Photo Hut!

FYI, my first instinct was to get to my daughter's side and hug her because I still had her in my life. While you are certainly entitled to your opinion, I choose to not comment on anything else you have said because until you walk a mile in someone's shoes...so the saying goes. Thank you for the good wishes.
You're right, usually not their first instict it's their second. As for walking in someone's shoes, growing up in the city you could imagine what I have walked through. When I was a kid, I got hit by a car playing in the street, when I woke up and everyone saw I was ok, my dad kicked my ass for running in the street. When I was a little older, riding my bike a lady decided to switch lanes into mine while I was next to her. After falling off the trunk of her car bouncing and sliding to a stop I pick my head up to see her driving off. Luckily, someone got her liecense plate number and my first thought wasn't about suing her but making her pay for leaving the seen of the accident and she was charged with vehicular assault. Served a month in jail and 2 years probation, I was satisfied. Sure I got money for my medical bills and my bike but I wasn't looking for anything extra even though lawyers said I could, it wasn't about that, just wanted what was owed to me, a new bike and my medical costs.
I drive in the city a lot and people just walk oblivious to whats going on around them, or they just don't care. Cars try to cross intersections and sometimes get caught up in them, lights change and people start walking and cars start moving, when the cars have a chance to move out of the intersection they can't because people who have the walk signal think they have the right of way, and they do but if they stopped for a second and the cars could move then everyone can be on their way. A lot of the traffic in NYC is caused by pedestrians walking (anyone who drives in the city knows what I am talking about) or them just piling up on corners a lot of the times right off the sidewalk in the street for people trying to make a turn who can't because of people blocking the road. When you honk at them to move so you can pass, you get an attitude and you're the asshole for wanting them to get on the sidewalk where they belong.
As for people crying about muggings, why would you expect someone to stop and help? If they're desperate enough to be out on the street stealing they are desperate enough to do anything so why expect someone to stop and risk getting their life getting taken for a couple hundred bucks and your make up or whatever, that doesn't belong to them? You give up your stuff, you call the cops, file a report, you get on with your life and you chalk it up to cost of living in the city. There are many people in the city willing to help someone in crisis (me included) but for a mugging, what you have on your person, it's just not worth it. One of my drivers was held up for the truck he was driving and didn't want to give it up for some reason I just wont understand and he was shot in the back for it. Luckily he is still alive but it could have turned out a lot worse and all for a truck with it's contents that are all insured.
