My daughter was hit by a car in Manhattan

Fortunately, she suffered only a knee injury and, so far, cannot work (bartending, waiting tables) for a few days. The worst part, however, was that it was a hit and run. Imagine hitting someone with your car, looking in the rearview to see the carnage and saying "fuck it" before driving away?
I can't. A young man chased the car for three blocks, told the driver she should return to the accident site - and when she REFUSED, yes, refused - he took a photo of her license plate. He then ran back to the accident site and tended to my daughter. She was in shock and didn't want to call an ambulance, so the young man walked her over to the police station where he gave his eyewitness account (including that he had pulled people out of the way of the errant car but couldn't reach my daughter in time), waited with her until my husband and I arrived and gave us all of his personal information (address, work info, cell and home numbers) so we can contact him in the future. My daughter was not walking against the light, either. It happens that a traffic cop actually waved the driver on so the car would be out of the grid. What an idiot ! There are now detectives on the case to find the woman and to get her insurance information. Any good personal injury lawyers who practice in Manhattan and happen to love Pearl Jam? Just kidding, but then again, I don't know any lawyers so if anyone has a referral, let me know in a PM. Thanks.

  • Sorry to sound insensitive but did the driver give a reason as to why she wouldn't come back? I mean, if it were me and I drove off and someone who saw the whole thing stopped me, I think I'd have the sense to then go back. I'm just curious to know what her excuse was.

Matt, that is not insensitive at all. The driver told the guy who chased her that she saw people help my daughter to her feet which led the woman to believe she must have been okay because she could stand up. When the guy said my daughter had a knee injury and she should return, that is when she refused. I thought perhaps the woman had a liquid lunch and didn't want to be arrested for DUI/DWI. Just my guess, but it could be for any number of reasons including that she may be heartless and irresponsible.

Maybe the latter and I'm going to throw in 'pretty dumb' too because she hasn't helped her own case much either. Oh well, her own fault. Thankfully your daughter will be fine.

I think this is where you can truly see what a person is made of.

I don't know how I could have kept on driving without thinking how serious of injury I might have cause. So heartless and irresponsible are probably the best words to describe her.

Yeah it's funny, how 4-wheel vehicle drivers always talk crap about bikers and cyclists.
I don't know but I'd rather get hit by two-wheelers than a freckin' car.

  • Wow yet again, people and their stupidity, heartlessness and lack of compassion, never fail to amaze me. Hell, I couldn't even drive away if I hit a squirrel, or any animal, let alone a person. I just don't get it.

I am really glad she is ok and so happy that one person stepped up and did the right thing for her.

I'm so sorry this happened to your daughter! Some people just have no sense of common decency. If you don't have any empathy you don't have a soul. I'm glad your daughter will be ok. Glad that guy had the compassion and decency to help her out. That gives me a little more faith in people

Cars are dangerous things for sure, im 23 year old and havent even had a lesson. Not sure i want to either, the roads are crazy!! Havent been on here in a while, had to attend the funeral of a good friend who died in a car crash last month. Dont drink and drive folks, you think you're invincible but its not worth it! I dont know if i could be be bothered with the pressure of driving, would be scared i hit a kid or something.
People say im paranoid. Well, they dont say it, but i know that's what they are thinking.

    thats fucking crazy!
Same shit happened to me in miami bout 3 yrs ago right b4 I was about to head back to NY to be with my fam for the holidays and for my sis baby.

SO sorry to hear that..at least she got helped. Me? Ha! I was coming back from work at like 4am bout 3 blocks away from my house and some stupid cornballs decided to play chicken with me at the stop sign and then waived me to GO AHEAD..so I did and the pieces of shit floored it on me, I dive backwards only to be clipped and spun around. Fell on my shoulder dislocated it and when I got up to walk I crumbled to the ground and heard a snap... lost my cell, turned back to see license plate and they busted a quick left and no one saw shit. I jumped 3 blocks home on one leg, called my best friend a massage therapist, took me to the hospital and I was revealed to have a fractured tibula.
    cool stuff huh?
gotta love the mutherfuckers out there..hope they get theirs and worse. My sis has worked for some of the best lawyes in manhattan as a paralegal and all that so let me know if you need any help. Best wishes for a speedy recovery if she got hurt bad :(
Aah, fuck it, I’m just gonna go home, turn on the fuckin’ TV...

  • Thanks everyone for your replies. The bruising looks bad, but she is doing okay. I gave up driving when I moved back to Manhattan from the suburbs and I don't miss it at all. The ironic thing is my apartment comes with a free parking space. LOL. Free parking in Manhattan and I no longer own a car !!!

Anyway, Sticky, maybe I'll see you at Coogan's on Monday or Tuesday. I would take a referral if you speak to your sis. Hope, too, that you are okay :)

The silver lining is the guy that helped her. Here we focus on the garbage driver that hit your daughter and we should, but the guy who ran the car down, waited, gave his info etc.

Good for him. Situation brought out the best in that guy.

Hope your daughter is fully healthy first and that this woman is caught and dealt with by the law.

I am glad your daughter is okay. That must have been so scary for her...

Who in the hell hits someone and then leaves?!? I cannot even imagine doing that, or even knowing someone who would. I hope they get her really quickly so that they can blood test her to see if she was drinking. Either way, she is an idiot.

She might have gotten just a little slap on the wrist had she stopped. There has to be some sort of extinuating factors as to why she didn't.

    Keep us posted,
I still want you all to "take care"--I am just damn tired of typing it.

thats a damn fine point...i was so incensed by the piece of shit driver i forgot that there are still some excellent people out there.....:)
  • glad she's doing ok...sounds like you might have a very hefty lawsuit against the nypd as well as thr woman who hit your daughter. the officer appears to have been negligent to wave the driver through the intersection while pedestrians were crossing. this negligence is especially evident in that the cop didnt even know there was an accident in the intersection right where he waved the driver through

The guy is an angel ! It was a Friday @ 5:15 PM in Midtown near Penn Station. Thousands of people around, all just wanting to get home to start the weekend. Then here is this one guy, who has to travel home for an hour and half by bus out of Port Authority and who will miss part of his nightly routine with his 2 and 1 year old children (he'd now be home after their bedtime), unselfishly gives it up for my kid. What a guy ! I want to send something to his home and thinking perhaps something for the kids. Don't want to send flowers. Any suggestions?

Right, Kerry (my daughter) said the TWO traffic cops on duty did not even respond. They went on directing traffic. I am going to check with the good samaritan to see if he included this in his statement - which I believe he did because he was also almost hit.

Later on, while we were in the emergency room and Kerry's thinking was clearer, she laughed and said she had just remembered what she was thinking before she got hit, "The traffic cops do a good job of keeping the cars moving".

holy crap Mama. I hate to say that it doesn't surprise me so much there are some jacked up people in this city, but thank God for that Good Samaritan, he truly was her guardian angel. I am sorry she was hurt, but thank God, it sounds like it could have been so much worse. I wouldn't have thought of a lawyer, I would have just thought to thank God she's ok.
    Hang in there mama.

My daughter was on her way to her job as a bartender and stood to make quite a bit of money for her shift. Now she stands to lose a couple of thousand dollars because she can't return to work just yet. Believe me, I was more than happy she was okay, but insurance is there for a reason. My daughter should be compensated for her injury and lost wages and the only way to get compensation is to hire a lawyer

Besides, this was a crime - a hit and run and an error the part of the traffic cops. It shouldn't happen to anyone. And, yep, we love our guardian angel :D

oh, wow. I'm so sorry to hear that your daughter was hit :( I'm glad she's ok.

How could any decent human being not stop if they hit someone??? Especially after they were informed about an injury involved - and the woman had to know that she would be reported. Perhaps she did have something more to hide - drinking or similar. And police on the scene not doing anything? Crazy!

Kudos to the guy who helped her out!
