Flyers General Manager Paul Holmgren updated the condition of defenseman Braydon Coburn on Monday from the Virtua Center Flyers Skate Zone. Coburn left Sunday’s Game 2 in Pittsburgh with a facial injury less than two minutes into the contest, and did not return. He was hit with a deflected puck.

“We’re still waiting to hear word on how his eye actually is. Right now, it’s swollen shut, there are no fractures and he’s doing better,” said Holmgren. “We have no reason to think that there’s anything wrong with the eye itself.
“Last night our doctors who were at the game thought he was fine, but we just wanted him to get checked out by an actual ophthalmologist. Assuming there are no issues there, we’ll just wait for the swelling to go down.
“I would say for the game tomorrow, he’s probably doubtful.”
Holmgren explained that Coburn did not feel well on the flight back to Philadelphia late last night, but that there is no reason to believe the defenseman suffered anything further.
“He had no loss of consciousness. At the time he was cognizant and aware when [Flyers trainer Jim McCrossin] got to him. He did have some issues on the plane last night but I think everybody thinks it was due to loss of blood. He lost a lot of blood from that injury.”
“Everything checks out, we’re just waiting to hear from the ophthalmologist on the actual eye itself, whether there’s any issues there. We don’t suspect there is, we just want to get it checked out.”

I think the biggest problem for all the Flyers lines is that the breakout of their zone has been terrible. As for the Briere line, I think the Pens have used Gil and Orpik against for the most part, which has slowed down and stopped the work along the boards. With the last change, the Flyers can get away from that matchup but I think there might be some line changes.
Maybe put Hartnell with Carter and Knuble with Briere but I don't know if there is much else that can be done... all the lines have looked weak and I'm sure the terrible ice in Pittsburgh had alittle something to do with that.
actually the terrific d had a little something to do with that. Is the ice not bad for the penguins? doesn't seem to be affecting them.

actually it would be the Pens forecheck not their D... and the ice does affect both teams, it also is nice to be able to play on that ice 41 games out of the year....
NOCODE- go back into your hole... no excuses here, this team has outperformed EVERYONE'S expectations and I'm pleased with where there are at this point. Can they go further??? why not... and if not, then I look forward to a just as good if not better season next year.

wow... couldn't clear the zone, or get an effective breakout, then when in the offensive zone it was either try to dipsy do with the puck and not take any shots or one shot and out of the zone.... unbelievable.... Also the forwards were getting too tight to the net and anytime there was a rebound it skipped by them and back to the point... kinda reminded me of the Habs after a few games of Biron stopping their chances, trying to make the perfect play or shot instead of just shooting and going to the net. The difference being that Fluery really hasn't been consistently tested by the Flyers this series.
well its not over yet but pretty damn close.... an outstanding season and alot to look forward to with the team.....

i just want to say thank you to the flyers for playing a great playoffs. i know it is not over but when your missing your top 2 defense man it is hard. i can't wait for next year. is it to early to start the 2008-09 flyers thread yet? if Pitt plays the Wings i will be going for the red wings.

The Pens are playing well and you can see it more when you're there
Their forwards are really back checking the hell out of the Flyers or clogging the lanes in the Neutral zone when the Flyers try to come out of their zone
It's reminding me of the trouble the Flyers had for years with the Devils when they trapped
It's been a great year....they surprised the hell out of me this year...great ride
Hopefully a few tweaks in the off season and we'll be back

The more I think about it, the prouder I am of this team. To come from worst last year to fighting for a Conference championship this year (I use fighting loosely), is incredible. By going out and strengthening positions of weakness last offseason through trades and signings as well as building off the core of young players already in place, this organization has done an outstanding job in a year's time. Just imagine what they could do if the Flyers were horrible for 3 or 4 years in a row and got the 1st or 2nd pick in the draft every year....

It definitely was a great year. I'd like to see them at least extend it by one game tonight.

Philadelphia Flyers defenceman Braydon Coburn could be cleared to play Game 4 of the NHL Eastern Conference final Thursday (CBC, 7:30 p.m. ET) after a puck nearly hit his eye on Sunday.
However, the second-year defenceman will require medical clearance after he needed 50 stitches to close a gash to his left eye in Sunday's 4-2 playoff loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins.
With his left eye partially open, Coburn, 23, skated Wednesday.
"We'll see how it feels [Thursday]; I had a good workout," Coburn told reporters. "I feel a little bit tired having been off a few days."
He was struck in the face less than two minutes into Game 2 of the NHL Eastern Conference final after Hal Gill's point shot deflected off Evgeni Malkin's stick and struck him near the left eye.
Coburn fell to the ice, bleeding profusely, before rising to his feet and heading for the dressing room with a towel held to his face.
Moreover, he suffered from dizziness and vomiting on the flight to Philadelphia, where he was examined Monday by an ophthalmologist.
Rookie Ryan Parent, 21, replaced Coburn in the lineup for Game 3 on Tuesday, won 4-1 by the Penguins, who lead 3-0 in the best-of-seven series.
Coburn set career highs in every major category this season, posting nine goals and 27 assists for 36 points with a plus-17 rating in 78 games. He has six assists in 14 playoff games.
Game 4 will be broadcast on CBC-TV and streamed live at CBCSports.ca at 7:30 p.m. ET.
