If I was going I'd definitely want to see Metallica - they are an important band! If you're worried about the fans, just stay back a bit - the hardcore will be upfront no doubt. I can't imagine a band that would make me stay away from a festival, unless it was headlined by Insane Clown Posse or something.
Now, I wouldn't see them whilst there simply because they were a huge/'important'/influential/etc. band. I would attend the show if I actually sincerely enjoyed their music, but I do not. However, I wouldn't say that ALL OF IT drives me up the wall. I can understand why some people love their music. They ARE good, no doubt, at what they do. I just don't happen to dig their thing. From trusted sources (for instance, friends who are fantastic musicians who like their music), the consensus is that they are terrific live, and I don't doubt it.
Unfortunately when the headliners play, pretty much everything else does shut down (well, other bands don't play). On the plus side, that doesn't matter because there's going to be thousands are amazing folk who will still be having a good time elsewhere.
05/30/03 Van, 09/01/05 Gorge, 09/02/05 Van, 09/04/05 Cal, 09/05/05 Ed, 09/07/05 S'toon, 09/08/05 'Peg, 07/22&23/06 Gorge, 06/14/08 'Roo, 08/08/09 Cal, 09/21/11 Cal, 09/23/11 Ed, 12/02/13 Cal
i'm splitting hairs, and borderline talking shit here, however, wouldn't you say if Kid Rock was also a headliner, or Nickelback, or otherwse, that you would simply see more knuckleheads? I'm generalizing horribly here, I know. Luckily there are at least SOME intelligent Metallica fans, and at least everyone there won't be there because of Metallica, so yeah, I'm still going.
ohhhhh. that would be awesome. Speedy's Nickleback jokes would be priceless. keep me entertained for hours
I'm going because there wont be any fire breathing hippies there. Any by fire breathing... I mean Greatful dead chicks with their unshaven armpit hair blowing in the wind like fire breathing dragons. So since Gerry is in the ground and the greatful dead aren't going to play.... then I'll go.
Stereotyping sucks... don't it? Everyone is going to cry now. So easy it is... and yet they do not see.

exactly! for those that don't want to watch metallica, i'm sure you will still have an awesome time doing something else!
There will be plenty of things to do and see other than Metallica that night at Bonnaroo. (Hint: The people who got the best spots for the Flaming Lips' midnight show last year skipped The Police entirely and went up to grab their spots for the Lips. There will be somebody/something cool at midnight Friday night this year too.)
Liberace was great on the piano but he sucked on the organ.
Metallica's a good band. I'm not a Lars fan either (mostly because I hate the way he drums as opposed to his attitude) but James is a nice guy from what I can tell and so are the rest of them. I'm definitely considering going to Bonnaroo after hearing about PJ.
I pledge to you a government that will not only work well, but wisely, its ability to act tempered by prudence, and its willingness to do good, balanced by the knowledge that government is never more dangerous than when our desire to have it help us blinds us to its great power to harm us.

hahaha brilliant.
speedy, you do realize don't you, that over at the metallica forums, they all have signatures that read something like 'SPEEDY MCCREADY '08'
they love you too
for the benefit of the people who are now rushing over to the metallica forums to check...this is not a true story.
See now that shit is good hearted and funny. Speedy you are always universally funny. I have a lot to learn from you. You are like the yoda of funny man message board guy. You always get your point across without being offensive. I am more like a punch you in the teeth kind of guy which gets me in trouble. (In Yoda voice) Much to learn from you, I have.

i was really into metallica when i was about.....13, i dunno...there cool and all becuase they're metallica and they set a good point in metal music but i'm really over it...and i think they are too. in my opinion, metallica hit the down side of the hill years ago.
plenty of bands at bonnaroo i'd much rather see than metallica.
i've never seen my morning jacket before and i love them.

Gonna have to agree there. Even the majority of big-time Metallica fans have been disappointed with what they come up with in the past 16 years... all the more reason why I'm baffled that they're playing at Bonnaroo. Then again, if the music they're playing is good in your mind, then it really doesn't matter when it was written. Not to mention The Police playing there last year, who grossed like $212 million doing a cheesy sell-out tour.
There, I effectively argued against my own goddamn point.

i was worried but now im not. i dont think Mettalica is going to draw that many people to a hippy festival
alsoi think Metallica will result in there being fewer people there, so it wont be so crowded.

Metallica have many many more fans than Pearl jam by a considerable amount. You'd be surprised.
