This may not come as a shock but it's still happening despite the law against it. I think the rule is that they're allowed to shoot the fox but not chase it. So the people that partake just say 'well the dogs come along and if they should chase the fox (which of course they do) then we're unable to stop them. *wink wink*

As for the protests, I was told that it was just a class thing, that people that are against the sport, actually just don't like the richer country community. That had never crossed my mind at one point but now I'm starting to think the hunters who generally ARE country folk believe they're above the law.
My father in law (a JP!!!) told me 'yeah sure, it's not right and it's against the law but there's ways around it and if there's no one there that can enforce the law, it doesn't matter'. So I said 'so I can go and murder someone but if no one sees, it doesn't matter? Great! Can I borrow your gun'? ;)

It's really not about class, it's about an innocent animal being terrified, running to save it's poor life, only to be torn apart by a pack of dogs. I'm preaching to the wrong people, I know but I had to get that off my chest. :D

P.S.

Oh and it gives me such a warm feeling inside to know my boyfriend's dead against it, being as he grew up in that kind of lifestyle. :)

I misread your title. I thought that you hated fax hunting. I was about to go off on a rant about how people at the office should just leave faxes that do not belong to them in the tray as opposed to throwing them in the recyclable bin so that I don't have to hunt them down! Then I actually read your post and got sad. :( Hey, Fuckers, Leave them Foxes Alone!! :)

HAHA! Now stop ruining my threads! I was ready to bash some heads together and now I'm just giggling. You did this to CornishMan's birthday thread. It ended up being about people that smell of various foods. hahaha

I just want to know who waste their energy chasing a fox when it's far easier to just set a trap and sit back and wait..........

I am all for hunting........Some of the ways i don't understand.........but to each their own

And as far as the killing the human comment.........THERE IS A BIG DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A HUMAN AND A FOX

who told you that... Liar McHearsay?

thats bollocks... people who protested were mainly from animal right groups.. or at least were affiliated with them

anyway, i hate them.. not "just dont like".. i actually loathe them :)

Well yeah, that's true but it got my point across about people turning the other cheek.

And dunk, I can't loathe these people because apart from this, most of them are pretty cool. If I hated everyone that did somethig I didn't like, I'd hate everyone.

I'm full of ham handed comments because I'm not very good at expressing myself. Maybe dad in law thought the same thing because he didn't say anything back.

Of course I think most if not all the animals rights people should be locked up in a mental hospital............

the only kind of hunting i don't like are caged hunts.........
  • that's a rich person's sport.....

I wouldn't go that far but as a meat eater, it would be a bit rich of me to complain about people that hunt and then eat what they've caught. Unless of course you're a bad shot like Madonna. I'd rather that than the animal being locked in a pen and treated poorly.

In our countries though, I don't understand hunting souly for sport. I mean, take up darts or something? Tradition doesn't mean much really, we're not living in third world countries.

the landed gentry are not cool.. i know this...

You forgot that most of them own a Labrador. Not that there's anything wrong with that! It's just that they do.

Most of them are pretty cool though. Like when I was house sitting for them and the place flooded, boyfriend was at work and I was there alone with our newborn baby, most of the neighbours came round and offered help at draining the water, making drinks, watching baby at times, etc. There's more but I won't bore you with it. :o

  • Fax Hunting is a great sport...fills up hours of a work day - all to find out that the resulting fax was used as some sort of coffee cup coaster by what I would classify as a possible "trainable"

fOx hunting, on the other hand is barbaric and cruel...no one eats the foxes...it isn't used for sustenance at all. As a matter of fact, the fox hunt was expanded to include the "newly rich" middle class who wanted the prestige of being "landed gentry" but lacked the acreage to hunt deer (which could actually be eaten) The use of dogs was to preserve the pomposity of the gentry who felt it was beneath them to hunt "vermin"

there has never been much purpose behind the hunting of foxes, even as population control...they had to import a different variety of fox which interbred with the native English foxes creating a strain known as the European Red fox.

Hunting foxes becomes even more ridiculous in this century...and for people to claim that it is because of tradition or culture makes me wonder if they feel it would be fine for them to essentially request some form of compensation (dowry) for their daughter's hand...do their wives vote? In the U.S. would we be able to own slaves?? that could have been a tradition too!

oh, by the way - I AM comparing the barbaric fox hunt with slave ownership and the categorical subjugation of humans based on race, creed, economic class. Yes, they are animals...but, ahem, so are we.

using another animal for food -with respect and NEED, I do not have a problem with...I personally do not do it, but I am fortunate enough to be able to have multiple choices regarding sustenance...

MCKB - kick those jerks in the shins for me!

I'm not a big fox person, I think they're rotten little fuckers. A lot like a river otter that way. That said, I don't agree with killing for sport. Now, if I had seen the fox that ate my kittlen last year, I probably would've shot it, but then who am I to tell one fox from another?
I really screwed that up. I really Schruted it.

I do hate "fax" hunting....Ive been doing a lot of that since in my new office.:p

But anyway to stick to the topic..I think fox hunting is cruel..but anykind of mistreatment of animals saddens me.

it is cruel and done for all the wrong reasons. Hunting for food and a way of life vs sport are two different things.

I say the foxes should get together and start hunting some of the richies.

I live right smack dab in the middle of the land of hunting. Everyone owns guns, everyone shoots everything and think they are pretty badass. I personally think hunters are, by in large, a giant pack of pussies who are afraid of any competition on equal footing. Hunting is only a sport if me challenging a quarapelgic to a game of basketball is also a sport. I'd like to see these same hicks (or big city transplants) get in the ring with another human.

Now, don't get me wrong. I am an avid outdoorsmen and I'll bet you dollars to doughnuts that I could out hike and out survive any of these guys. You want to try something hard? Try sneaking up on animals close enough to get a great photograph. That's hard. Killing something with a gun is not. Also, in case you think I'm some kind of peace loving hippy you should know that I probably have more guns than most of the hunters, I just don't use them on the 4 legged critters. Now, if I was starving and it was really about survival and not just one species bullying another, I'd eat anything - including another hunter. Don't worry, I'm part Cherokee, so I would be respectful of the life I took and thank the gods for the delicious hick.

    Tish,

I've ridden steeplechase and hunter jumper for most of my life...you get the cool clothes, you don't have to shoot at anything, and by the way, the damn hats are heavy and give you a headache. :)
