I've gotten the impression that the other format (HD-DVD) is the underdog.

Not that I've done research on the subject, but that is what I've observed...

  • Could be. It's waaaaaay to early to tell right now. Both the HD-DVD and BluRay players are overpriced and extremely buggy so I'm waiting for the format war to be over be for I buy ANYTHING. More companies have thrown their support behind BluRay if that means anything.
    So this life is sacrifice...

It's safe to say that if Blu-Ray is the next Beta than the PS3 is screwed! Personally I think they'll eventually make dual players and we won't have to worry about buying two different DVD players.

That was the thinking a few months back, but Blu-ray is out selling HD 2 to 1 now.

what the hell is the deal here? i finally get on board and build a dvd collection and now they're already going to phase that shit out for their fucking hd bullshit. damn the man!

I've read many reports where Blu-ray is outselling HD-DVD 3 to 1 now.

Considering Sony/Blu-ray has a lot more movie studios and production companies with a great deal more support for 3rd party software and hardware companies...I'd say the odds are Blu-ray will be the next popular format. HD-DVD hit the market first, but without as much support, it will probably exit first as well.

Both players support the current DVD technology. You're collection...and MY collection will work on next-gen systems.
  • I have a 100+ inch home theater setup, so I have both HD-DVD and Blu-ray players. It makes a HUGE different at these screen sizes, but I can't imagine the average person upgrading to any of these formats. On my friends tv's most can't tell the different between a good DVD player and an HD player.

So, I imagine both will remain a niche market until we get super low prices or screens get really huge.

I dunno. A buddy of mine has a Blu-ray player and while it's nothing I can afford, it looks freakin' AWESOME.
I watched Casino Royale at his place a week ago...my god it was sweet!! He has the same TV as me (only 5 inches bigger). I have a Sony 50" SXRD HDTV and if I had the cash I'd get a Blu-ray player tomorrow....or at least a PS3. :p
  • I see so much advertisement for Blu-ray, and especially support from Best Buy and Circuit City. They always have displays up for it. I hardly ever see any commercials about movies coming to HD-DVD, but tons for Blu-ray... I think that may be the problem with HD-DVD right now, not enough marketing.

HD DVD adherents concede they missed a golden opportunity in 2006, when delayed Blu-ray hardware was stumbling into the marketplace.

"We missed the holiday season" by not getting enough players into stores," Graffeo notes. "We were all disappointed by it."

Blu-ray movie titles were selling twice as fast as those on HD DVD. "We're very rapidly going to see it become a one-horse race over the course of the year."

"We're really starting to put some distance between (Blu-ray and HD DVD)," adds Sony Home Entertainment worldwide prexy David Bishop. "We project that ratio will only continue to widen."

17 of the top 20 titles from 2006 were only available on blu-ray

oh and it outsells hd-dvd players 3:1

which basically solidifies ps3 and the winner of the next gen race not next gen sprint. (think SNES eventually beating Genesis)

They both are capable of 1080p, so I could careless. I just with one format would die already. This battle only hurts the consumer.

I don't have either and won't get anything until I am forced to. Or until I save enough money to buy a PS3.

You can still play regular DVD's on a Blu-ray or HD-DVD player. They are basically just DVD's with more space so high definition content can fit on one disk, but there is more to it than that.

Yeah, I'm going to still buy regular DVDs until I get my PS3 or Blu-ray player. At that point I will get Blu-ray discs and keep my DVD collection as is.

I read a while back that at least one vendor is producing a drive that will play both new formats. The early reviews weren't so good, but Its reasonable to think that we may be able to buy players that are fully fuctional and play both in the future. Blu Ray and HDDVD have been slow to take off so maybe the player technology will catch up in time to avoid another VHS vs. BETA situation.

I think they are already selling one that will play both. and honestly, it isn't terribly much more expensive than one that just supports one format.

I nearly bought an HDTV a few weeks ago, but I am glad I hesitated. I really think I am going to not upgrade anything for a while. I am happy with my 27" standard-def flat screen Samsung, with a regular DVD player (S-Video) and a PS2 (component).

Why not? Current HDTVs are amazing.
Cable or Satellite broadcast in 1080i.

My 50" Sony SXRD is one of the best purchases I've ever made. The thing is gorgeous!

According to Home Media Research Sales Figures, Blu-ray Disc is the first next-gen DVD format to break the million-disc-sold milestone, an accomplishment less than a year in the making. According to the same sales data, Blu-ray accounted for 70-percent of the high-def movies sold in Q1 2007. Since both formats' launch, seven of the top ten selling HD-movies were Blu-ray releases.

Well a DVD has a red laser which reads the data, guess what colour a blue ray one is?:)
Apparently it can read more data all so, about 25gb to a disc.:p
