i've heard you can't really compare the two because the movie basically just has the same title but little else.

    Pulp Fiction

I thought it was shit and still do. Reservoir dogs is a far superior movie. Pulp fiction is just a load of overblown guff.

Also 'The royal tenenbaums'. I hate these movies with a narrator guiding you along the whole way. I'd rather read a book if that's what I was after. I mean, how about giving the viewers imagination even a tiny bit of room to maneuver?

Yeah.. I wanna! JD is a brilliant actor. He doesn't confine his roles to the 'safe' ones. He doesn't 'try to do' anything, he does what pleases him and does it beautifully! So many different roles/characters. Truly great actor.

He doesn't rely on his beauty for his roles (though he is the scrummiest!). Maybe it's the type of films you don't like/understand. I love his work with Burton, but have you seen films like 'What's eating Gilbert Grape?' or Benny and Joon. Look up his work - there is more than the fantasy/sci-fi (though in The Libertine - I guess you could call that 'period' - he is amazing!)
No I get the fact that he chooses what he likes and fair play to him... I just don't like the same kinda stuff! I respect the fact that he doesn't play on his looks either... but I really wish he did :D cos chocolat was made pretty bearable by him playing on his looks for once :)

I have seen and liked what's eating gilbert grape and benny and joon. I can see he has talent, it's just when he makes a new film I'm absolutely NOT excited about it at all... and IN my opinion I think he WASTES his talent on crap (although I still don't think he's half as good as people give him credit for). I just wish he'd make the kinda films that I like to watch :) ok? :D

I just don't see it... I mean don't get me wrong he's a gorgeous gorgeous man... but the films he picks are far from anything I like. I generally don't like stupid/fantasy/sci fi/period films and he's done a good bit of the former and the latter.

But do you think he's a good actor?

Have you seen Donnie Brasco, Blow, What's Eating Gilbert Grape (Leonardo DiCaprio is great in this one), Benny & Joon...

    What's a period movie?

edit: I have just read that ^ post.

I think he's 'good'... I can enjoy watching him in Donnie Brasco, Blow, all the normal stuff he's done. I wouldn't call him 'great' though. I think the fact that he chooses more obscure roles and does what he want can often be confused with greatness. He doesn't do much (acting wise) for me. I'd put him in the same rank as Brad Pitt... nothing wrong with him as an actor and relatively easy on the eye... but hasn't blown me away in anything... but no more than that. But then, that's just my opinion.

Edward Scissorhands was my favourite movie when I was a kid (well that one and a whole bunch of other movies as well hehe). Then when I was a bit older, when I was really really really into mafia movies, I saw him in Donnie Brasco and I thought he was great. Then I saw Scissorhands again and realized it was Depp as well, and ever since he's made a lot of movies that I really like, or even love.

But then, that's just my opinion :D

I think Brad Pitt is a good actor. I think he's brilliant in Twelve Monkeys.

I agree with you. I don't have a big problem with Depp but I think he is respected more for doing a wide variety of roles than for any great acting he does. I don't really care about seeing his movies.

  • I forgot to say before...

    Forrest Gump.

I honestly don't know what that film was trying to do or say. Was the guy disabled, or just plain 'stupid'? The film doesn't say. And when it suggests a disability, it's the part where he's running so fast and hard that his ankle splints miraculously fall off and he doesn't need them anymore! Run forrest, run!! I know quite a few people who were angered by that scene.

    Blade Runner.

I went out and bought because everyone told me that I would love it - and usually I'm pretty easy on movies. But what a boring movie. The Blade Runner isn't even that good. He gets lucky almost every time. Maybe I need to watch it again...

ohhhh have you seen Seven? Pitt was GREAT in that film. Especially the ending. He says more with his facial expressions in that final scene than he probably has in the rest of his career with dialogue.

Seven and Fight Club are Pitt's great films, no doubt about it.

Along with Twelve Monkeys these films show he is a very good actor. Underrated I think. Though he did do crap films too.

What is the movie that really made Pitt a huge star? I have talked about this with my wife and we can't pinpoint it.

Well I agree that he was amazing in those 2 great movies.....my favorite Brad Pitt role was when he played Floyd the bong smoking room mate in True Romance....classic!!!! ;)

It pains me to see some of my favorite movies in this list: Lost In Translation, Blair Witch, Magnolia, Sideways, The Big Lebowski, Pulp Fiction, Unbreakable, Borat etc etc....guess there is no accounting for taste

One movie I HATED that everyone seems to love is....Gladiator - what a pile of crap (definitely the worst movie ever to win an Academy Award for Best Picture)

Thelma and Louise. That was the turning point in his career. Not much time on screen but he made a huge impact!

Brad Pitt burst onto the scene as the incredibly hot guy with a fantastic body in Thelma and Louise. I think he got pigeonholed and was considered nothing more than a pretty face. When people hear Brad Pitt, they think 'Sexiest Man Alive', not great actor. The fact he's actually a great actor tends to be overlooked. Sure, he's been involved in some really bad movies, but very few haven't.

And Lost in Translation was phenomenal. I related quite a bit...

REALLY????????????? Wow - 3 great movies IMO. It doesn't get much better than Pulp Fiction (probably my second favorite movie - behind American Beauty)

I can understand how people might not love Lost In Translation - definitely not a movie made to appeal to the masses. Most people dont have the attention span for a rather slow character study....but I LOVED it. Bill Murray is brilliant in it - his eyes show more emotion than most actors can capture in an entire career.....very subtle

I'm not sure why Sideways gets the flack that it does....I enjoyed every second of it. The scene near the end where Paul Giamatti cracks into his vintage bottle of wine in that greasy spoon restaurant is amazing......why waste your life waiting for the important moments - create your own moments and savour them :)

    Paul Giamatti....so funny in Sideways.
