Don't think it helps when everyone raves on about how good a film is then you watch it and think uh? I'm just not a fan of 'stupid' humour - I prefer dry scathing sarcasm ;)
agreed completely. I hate most of Jim carrey's films but have been slyly manipulated into watching most of them like 'oh no, liar liar is NOTHING like his other films... it's MUCH funnier' eh no, it's not... he's still the same fucking annoying bollox he always was. I'm slowly warming to Adam Sandler... only cos my sister forces me to sit through at LEAST one of his films EVERY time I visit...so I think my brain is just telling me 'ya better start liking him or you're gonna be miserable'

Have you seen Truman Show, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind or The Number 23. Those are truly different. Not comedies.

Actually, I DID like the Truman show. Eternal sunshine was bearable... never saw the number 23.

Haven't seen the number 23 yet but my uncle who hates Jim Carrey saw it (he was tricked into seeing it :D) and he recommended it to me and he even said Jim Carrey was good.

The Aviator .... load of bollocks!
Brokeback Mountain ..... load of bollocks literally. Apparently the working title was "2 brownhatters go camping" but they thought that might offend.
The 3rd Pirates of Carib film. Walked out half way through. Utter bollocks!

But people, I see "The Departed", "Lord of the Rings" and "Lost in Translation" mentioned here

Yeh, I'm not a big fan either... I've loved some of his films and he's made some pretty decent ones... he's just hard to watch. Same with Russell Crowe and Renee Zellweger for me... cinderella man was a nightmare  my housemate and I after about 5 minutes kinda looked at eachother and I got the remote control.

Although I like renee in bridget jones and jerry maguire.. I just don't like her accent when she's thin  it goes stupid! And I thought he was brilliant in american gangster, only film I've liked him in.

    Yes. Twice, apparently :D

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ElUBr6-GLU (or are you still without speakers?)

I do need to tell myself 'it's Jim Carrey in a serious role' otherwise I'm just waiting for him to pretend like he's speaking with his ass.

Haven't seen the number 23 yet. I read you didn't like Secret Window but I thought it was ok. Not great, or even good but enjoyable.

"didn't like" is far too weak, thought it was utter shite as well. ;) and hey, i am ALL for making up your own mind.....but you are forewarned, that's all. :p

Everyone told me how great I Am Legend was but I was a bit disappointed really.

I'll see the number 23 eventually. I'm not going to rent it anyway :)

:D the secret window IMO was pure shite... absolutely agree 100% there.

TBH, and watch THIS post shake the thread up :o I can't stand Johnny Depp films in general. I dunno what he's trying to do... and for the love of god, somebody tell me WHY he's trying to do it! (cmon Rita, ya know ya wanna :p )

Because he's brilliant, that's why he does it. ;)

And of course, it's a fun job.

i am legend didn't disappoibt me, b/c i never expect much from flicks in that genre. :p so, for what it was, i found it entertaining enough. just not rally my kinda flick, bt gotta let hubby make some movie choices from time to time. compromise eh? ;) i think i've helped influence/improve his movie choices :D...but sure, i am a lot more open to flicks that normally i'd pass on. not to say i've grown to like any of em, haha, but with a different set of expecations....can at least be *enjoyable*

however, films of ANY genre can end up being utter shite. :)

in regards to johnny depp.....eh well....we all have different tastes. to see the beginnings of depp and his appeal/greatness as an actor, go see what's eating gilbert grape...tis the beginnings of his growth and appeal as an actor. he also takes some very interesting roles...some end up to be clunkers, but otehrs end up daring and exciting.

I just don't see it... I mean don't get me wrong he's a gorgeous gorgeous man... but the films he picks are far from anything I like. I generally don't like stupid/fantasy/sci fi/period films and he's done a good bit of the former and the latter.

    read all the posts here.

My movies that I can't stand are:

Pirates of the Caribien - nothing interesting to me, felt like I was too old for these movies
    Lord of Rings
    The Matrix
    unbreakable
scarface - didn't do anything for me, bunch of cheese

Movies dissed here that are great:

    Crash
Departed - best movie I've seen in a long time
Old school - funniest movie in a long time

Crash is horrible (more proof the Oscars are a sham).
    Departed " " " " " " " " "

    Old School is hilarious.

Yeah.. I wanna! JD is a brilliant actor. He doesn't confine his roles to the 'safe' ones. He doesn't 'try to do' anything, he does what pleases him and does it beautifully! So many different roles/characters. Truly great actor.

He doesn't rely on his beauty for his roles (though he is the scrummiest!). Maybe it's the type of films you don't like/understand. I love his work with Burton, but have you seen films like 'What's eating Gilbert Grape?' or Benny and Joon. Look up his work - there is more than the fantasy/sci-fi (though in The Libertine - I guess you could call that 'period' - he is amazing!)

    It really is all subjective.
I haven't seen Old School but LOVED the other 2 you mention.

Now me, I cannot stand Starship Troopers or anything that involves those kids playing hockey on top of the convenience store.
