I stopped one year when st. patrick's day fell on a friday and the arch bishop of boston said that everyone could eat corned beef. I was like "what the hell, if it's that arbitrary why I have I been doing this for so long?"

What the arch bishop of boston does concerns me more than what the arch bishop of Boston says.
... and the will to show I will always be better than before.

I am from a very big Catholic family, but I don't belong to any religion now. I stopped that years ago. Most of my family observes lent and are going to church tonight. I just don't get "it" (religion) anymore.

Born and raised Catholic here. Even raised my 2 sons Catholic but I kinda stopped going to church just this past summer...............so I guess I am not observing this year.

my grandmother used to have me convinced eating meat on a friday during lent and killing were equivalent offenses. mortal sins!! :p
    like i said...some traditions...deeply ingrained...

I think I have memories of my grandmother calling it a mortal sin too.
my mum on the other hand, as religious as she is, would ALWAYS forget. Or she'd try to be good and order pizza and then accidentally get pepperoni.

All the nuns in my grade school as well as the priests at my church and my grandparents on both sides would call it a mortal sin. Let's just say I had a lot of people pointing out everything I did wrong as a child. ;)

Alot of it is harmless if truth be told( eating meat that is). I remember the priest saying it would be alot better for people to be better people than giving up something

Oops. Thank goodness I'm on here or I would have forgotten. Last year I gave up fear. I ended up running the longest run in my life, and I ended up running the most mileage within a week in my life during Lent last year. So, that was good. I'll probably do another running-less-fear goal this time.

    Thanks for reminding me!

That must be a rare priest to have such a level headed outlook on things.

But, but, weren't you an extra in 'coal miner's daughter'?

I was, until Spacek filed that damn restraining order! So maybe it was an overkill for me to ask her everday if after the shoot I could mine her coal, but I thought it was funny!
