I was about to grab a soda out of the fridge and realized that is one of the things I really don't need right now. Anyone following the Catholic school tradition of giving something up for lent? I may do candy...don't think I can do soda with booze at the same time.

i'm not a very practicing religious person, either, but i always observe ash wednesday/lent. haven't been to church in months but you can believe i won't eat meat for the next few fridays! :) some things were ingrained pretty deep!

i'll be getting my ashes at lunchtime. and i think this year instead of giving something up (usually chocolate) i'll try to get back to going to church regularly. i always feel better when i do.

If there was something I felt I should give up I would, but there is nothing I can think of....well apart from alcohol, that aint gonna happen though.
    Astoria 20/04/06, Leeds 25/08/06, Prague 22/09/06, Wembley 18/06/07,
    Dusseldorf 21/06/07, Manchester 17/08/09, London 18/08/09, LA 06/10/09, LA 07/10/09.

Ain't gonna be any middle anymore.
  • I don't do lent anymore, but I never thought that you should give up something that you've been thinking about giving up anyway, I don't know why, that's just never how I understood the tradition personally. One year I sacrificed pearl jam. I didn't listen to any pearl jam for 40 days. If it came on the radio I turned it off. It was hard.

that's a good point... you're supposed to sacrifice something that you don't want to.

Giving up soda for Lent a couple years ago was harder for me than giving up alcohol when I was a bartender in college.

I went through really withdrawal and had the shakes.

I'm not sure what I'm giving up this year.

I already went out for Ashes this morning. I'm not very religious and am a holiday Catholic, but during Lent I at least practice the Lenten rituals.

alcohol is never even a thought since st. patrick's day always falls within lent. i'd give up catholicism before i'd give up beer on st. patrick's day. ;):D

I stopped one year when st. patrick's day fell on a friday and the arch bishop of boston said that everyone could eat corned beef. I was like "what the hell, if it's that arbitrary why I have I been doing this for so long?"

LOL, usually the bishop in Philly offers a dispensation on St. Patrick's Day. But you would have to give up Parade Day though. ;)

I remember the Red Sox one year got the bishop in Boston to issue a dispensation on a Friday in Lent because it was Opening Day and they didn't want the fans not to be able to eat Fenway Franks.

Gotta love the Church sometimes. ;)

The one year I give up booze did and worked the Erin Express (Irish Bar Crawl in Philly St. Patrick's Day weekend), I made about 400 bucks more in tips than I normally did the years when I was drinking behind the bar while working ... lol.

or I feel like you shouldn't give up something bad for you or something...

but yeah I was REALLY catholic in high school. where I grew up everyone was of irish, italian, hispanic, french, or like greek orthadox decent so I had some friends who would condemn you to hell if you ate meat on a friday.
