I've asked the lone Giants fan in our office to give up talking about them for Lent. I'm happy they beat the Pats, but jeez, this is going to be a rough year, especially since everyone else here is an Eagles fan.
But seriously, I'm thinking about sacrificing more of my time towards doing things that I normally wouldn't do (i.e. volunteering, helping out at my grandmom's nursing home, etc.). Hell, anything beats giving up alcohol.
"If you love someone, set them free... if someone loves you, don't fuck up" - EV
Giving up soda for Lent a couple years ago was harder for me than giving up alcohol when I was a bartender in college.
I gave up soda a few years back for Lent and it was far more difficult for 40 days than it has been avoiding alcohol for over 17 years. When you pop into a fast food place for lunch at work you suddenly realize how much soda is a part of your daily routine.
I'll do the no meat thing today and the next several Fridays, but I'm not sure if I'm gonna give anything up.(maybe I'll give up "Lost"....NOT!) I am far from religious, but tend to observe Lent as my one religious deed each year.
Just a normal Wednesday for me. Except, this is the one day of the year where I'm not the only person walking around with smeared charcoal on my forehead. It's nice to fit in for a change.

LMAO!
But, but, weren't you an extra in 'coal miner's daughter'?
And speaking of coal mines, anyone see Jackson TN got whacked with a twister yesterday? anyone in the RM hear from 'tha corrance'? hope he's alright.
One day in jr high I told a girl she had something on her forehead  I honestly thought she had something there.. how was I to know??? Poor little Protestant girl .. thank goodness I grew up to be heaten.. or well hedonistic as I like to say

OMG I nearly spit out my coffee when I read that! bahahaha!
I stopped one year when st. patrick's day fell on a friday and the arch bishop of boston said that everyone could eat corned beef. I was like "what the hell, if it's that arbitrary why I have I been doing this for so long?"
What the arch bishop of boston does concerns me more than what the arch bishop of Boston says.
... and the will to show I will always be better than before.
yes! i'm a quarter irish!!! and was closest to my 100% irish grandmother so i feel more irish than anything. she started us early on the irish songs and making a big deal about st. patty's day. it's my favorite day of the year! (again, when scranton celebrates on parade day....the saturday before)
i don't know how i missed this earlier, but i'm 3/4 irish...we're a perfect fit!!!

I am from a very big Catholic family, but I don't belong to any religion now. I stopped that years ago. Most of my family observes lent and are going to church tonight. I just don't get "it" (religion) anymore.
And so the lion fell in love with the lamb...,"
"What a stupid lamb."
"What a sick, masochistic lion."
Born and raised Catholic here. Even raised my 2 sons Catholic but I kinda stopped going to church just this past summer...............so I guess I am not observing this year.
So I'll just lie down and wait for the dream Where I'm not ugly and you're lookin' at me
my grandmother used to have me convinced eating meat on a friday during lent and killing were equivalent offenses. mortal sins!!
like i said...some traditions...deeply ingrained...
I think I have memories of my grandmother calling it a mortal sin too.
my mum on the other hand, as religious as she is, would ALWAYS forget. Or she'd try to be good and order pizza and then accidentally get pepperoni.

All the nuns in my grade school as well as the priests at my church and my grandparents on both sides would call it a mortal sin. Let's just say I had a lot of people pointing out everything I did wrong as a child.
Alot of it is harmless if truth be told( eating meat that is). I remember the priest saying it would be alot better for people to be better people than giving up something
Oops. Thank goodness I'm on here or I would have forgotten. Last year I gave up fear. I ended up running the longest run in my life, and I ended up running the most mileage within a week in my life during Lent last year. So, that was good. I'll probably do another running-less-fear goal this time.
Thanks for reminding me!

I was, until Spacek filed that damn restraining order! So maybe it was an overkill for me to ask her everday if after the shoot I could mine her coal, but I thought it was funny!

One of these years I'm going to have to make it up there. I think I'm going to Boston the week before and staying in Philly this year though.
It's going to be three great weekends in a row because March Madness starts the next week.

Old habits and I guess trying to justify that if you act good for a little more than a month that it makes up for the rest of the year.
