or I feel like you shouldn't give up something bad for you or something...

but yeah I was REALLY catholic in high school. where I grew up everyone was of irish, italian, hispanic, french, or like greek orthadox decent so I had some friends who would condemn you to hell if you ate meat on a friday.

I went to an all boy Catholic High School and this one Christian Brother who everyone hated would patrol all three lunch periods and give out detentions if you were caught eating meat on Ash Wednesday or any Friday during Lent.

yes! i'm a quarter irish!!! and was closest to my 100% irish grandmother so i feel more irish than anything. she started us early on the irish songs and making a big deal about st. patty's day. it's my favorite day of the year! (again, when scranton celebrates on parade day....the saturday before)

my grandmother used to have me convinced eating meat on a friday during lent and killing were equivalent offenses. mortal sins!! :p
    like i said...some traditions...deeply ingrained...

I love paddy's day...my mum always made a big deal of it because she thought that since our last name was italian we'd always feel more italian. lol I think she over did it because I've always felt way more irish.

I like to get raging drunk on paddy's day and find a guy with an irish accent to hook up with. (the last 2 years in NC that was kinda impossible, so cooked corned beef and cabbage for like 25 people. stinky.)

Giving up something for 40 days isn't solely a Catholic custom as I know quite a few Protestants that do this as well. As for myself, I've never tried it. I've never really seen the point in giving up something that you will pick back up and if you're having to give up something that's harmful to you, you should give it up regardless of religion.

As for the no meat on Friday.....well, that's just crazy talk. :)

I'm gonna try really hard not to bitch. As I've gotten older, it's become increasingly more difficult. :)

I've asked the lone Giants fan in our office to give up talking about them for Lent. I'm happy they beat the Pats, but jeez, this is going to be a rough year, especially since everyone else here is an Eagles fan.

But seriously, I'm thinking about sacrificing more of my time towards doing things that I normally wouldn't do (i.e. volunteering, helping out at my grandmom's nursing home, etc.). Hell, anything beats giving up alcohol.

One of these years I'm going to have to make it up there. I think I'm going to Boston the week before and staying in Philly this year though.

It's going to be three great weekends in a row because March Madness starts the next week.

Giving up soda for Lent a couple years ago was harder for me than giving up alcohol when I was a bartender in college.
I gave up soda a few years back for Lent and it was far more difficult for 40 days than it has been avoiding alcohol for over 17 years. When you pop into a fast food place for lunch at work you suddenly realize how much soda is a part of your daily routine.

I'll do the no meat thing today and the next several Fridays, but I'm not sure if I'm gonna give anything up.(maybe I'll give up "Lost"....NOT!) I am far from religious, but tend to observe Lent as my one religious deed each year.

Just a normal Wednesday for me. Except, this is the one day of the year where I'm not the only person walking around with smeared charcoal on my forehead. It's nice to fit in for a change.

Old habits and I guess trying to justify that if you act good for a little more than a month that it makes up for the rest of the year. ;)
