Wow. There's a strong undercurrent in Philly, but it's really not out in the open like that.

How long did the veggie burger take? ;)

Not to get into a whole Philly debate or anything again. I always say how much I like this city, but I was shocked about how out in the open it was when I moved here. Absolutely shocked. I am not easily offended and make inappropriate comments from time to time myself (obviously) but I couldn't believe how willing people were to throw certain words around to people they barely or don't know. I actually haven't experienced it as much recently, but I did get in a fight shortly after I moved here over some racist shit.

Edit: I do agree with RW that it is a class thing here though.

It's all about the classes in Philly. That's why the same neighbors that call each other terrible names will still have a beer afterwards because they know theyre on the same level.

We get it ... you think the team is racist. It certanly was years ago ... was.

Except, look at the current roster ... from stars like Crawford to players like Darnell McDonald and Mike Cameron. 3 African Americans off the top of my head on a roster of 25 is 12%, which is higher than the league average (which I beleive is still under 10%), sad but true.

And I'm not even counting the Latino or Asian players.

But, you go to the farm system now to support your theory which, looking at the roster quickly doesn't support your case either. Your shit's old.

I got to agree here. The mistakes with race by the Yawkeys and Pinky Higgins and others are a thing of the past. I don't think you label an organization or city just because of one dumb comment from someone who has a ticket.

Of course his shit's old - dude comes off as nothing more than ostentatious. All because he has a PhD in a made-up degree. Congratulations. You spent an extra 4-5 years of college bullshitting people so you don't have to get a regular job.

I was just kidding about Pawtucket hence the ;)...the callups have been comical however. I wasn't kidding about what I heard in the stands...it was right there...and maybe the management stuff is (kinda) part of the past. They have done nice things like go to the DR, and get back into the good graces of the Asian market after the '03 fiasco with (over former Brewer and Red Sox great Gabe Kapler methinks), but it hasn't changed the fans...look around the Fens. Anyway, veggie burger took 8-10 minutes just like the guy behind the counter told me it would, and just like he told everyone else buying one it would.

Jimed you may think it's old but players like Torri Hunter and Gary Mathews were talking about it in '07. I got that information by going to the library and reading it...and it was only 70k for the record - phd's are half-off right now. There's a reason why the Sox still have to go into minority communities to change minds.

as for being ostentatious that's fair...what good is it to learn about this shit and not talk about it? Or talk about the hard to road to redemption? Jimed if you read my earlier posts I said good things about the Sox and a bunch of their fans. Still there exists people like this:

Racism on the way to the ballgame

HAVING HAD some spare time last Saturday while in Boston on business, a colleague and I took an evening stroll in search of legendary Fenway Park. To our delight, not only did we find the ballpark, but we encountered thousands of excited fans as they funneled their way toward the park's Yawkey Way gates.

To our left, in the street, five or six elementary-age kids rode by on bicycles. They were African-American. A Red Sox fan, who was white, yelled toward the young cyclists for all within earshot to hear, "Where's my stereo?" Everyone around him laughed as the kids kept riding.

I suppose the implication is that young black children on bicycles go around stealing stereos from white adults.

This stereotyping made me shudder, as I reflected on the walk I had taken just the previous evening along the historic Freedom Trail. I happened upon the site of the Boston Massacre where, among other brave souls, African-American Crispus Attucks gave his life in the name of freedom 237 years ago.

Perhaps it will take another 237 years for that freedom to be realized.

I think everyone's getting sick of the racist Boston fans talk. It's like talking about throwing snowball at Santa Claus - we get it.

Ahh yes. One letter to the editor 4 years ago defines a region. Well done.

Listen, I'm from Mass, my graduating class in high school was about 500 and I could probably count on two hands the number of any minority that graduated with me. After living in San Francisco for 7 years, it's actually a culture shock to go back home with the overwhelming lack of diversity back there.

I've been in that ballpark more times than I can count. I'm not going to say this stuff never happens ... even today, I know it happens far more than any of us would want to admit. But three or four comments you hear in the stands doesn't define a region (and it certainly doesn't define the organization!) ... I'm guessing, judging by the many years you been on here with these claims and how gleeful you seem when posting them, that your radar is really up for these comments. But, how many instances of no one givng a rat's ass about race go by each and every time you're there and you don't pay one bit of attention to it? Are those few horrible instances going to paint the entire picture?

Just because some Yankees fan (whom, I really like) called one of the Sox players a "homo" on this very board a few days ago, am I going to paint the entire Yankees fanbase as a bunch of gay bashers? (The answer is no)

I whole heartedly agree that in some folks, tollerance is still lacking. But, I think the amount of ignorant lugnuts is far fewer than you think ... or certianly, far fewer than you portray it to be (which feels like the majority of Red Sox fans).

Maybe the next time something like this at the ballpark, you say something, polite, but say something. I guarantee the vast majority of folks will agree with you. It sure beats the hell out of coming on a music message board and stamping your seal of bigotry on the entirety of Red Sox fandom and the organization.

Jimed I wrote this like an hour ago "that's the crazy part...like a large margin of you hate it, but a significant number doesn't care and that's what sucks." And...I do more than post on a message board...it's more venting after being around it for an entire weekend. My in-laws are great people most of the time but have a horrible attitude when it comes to this stuff...not the overt horrible, but the white upper-class underhanded comments kind.

I've worked with kids that go to the Red Sox and intern for their diversity department, and have led trips to the DR too (with many Sox fans on it) to see just what conditions many of their favorite players with different values come from. Yesterday was my first fathers day and I was with my family when I heard the Nyjer Morgan thing and didn't see that as an appropriate time to go light someone up, and getting into it at the hot dog line while my wife was waiting for her burger didn't seem right. Maybe next time I should though.

Racism? Shit. That´s been in sports from day 1 and everywhere. Including here in Guatemala.

Cases has been well documented and have been given alarm, all across europe. Spain, Italy, to name worst cases. And its always mostly against the black players. People chant in the stadium, during the game when a black player has the ball, like monkeys. I mean its not only one fan, its like hundreds! Still, we can´t judge the entire fanbase, club, or country, based on such horrible scenario.

One thing is for sure. The world is filled with racists. You can´t hide that shit. My dad has had experience with that, while living in Boston for like 20 something years. At work, in the street, everywhere. You can all talk with him about this. But don´t be surprised when he tells you how much he loves the city of Boston. And the red sox, for the matter.

Just like you should not discredit all Vancouver citizens for the recent acts of stupidity. We should, however, demand our local authorities to do something about it.

    That´s outstanding.

But what´s even more outstanding? Gonzalez. As of today, he leads the majors in avg, total bases, rbi´s, doubles, and I don´t know what else.

I must admit I was not fond of his arrival to boston. But, damn! He has me in his pocket now!

MVP numbers, of course. The yankees might suggest Granderson, who´s having an unreal season as well. But Adrian´s is far better. The yankee has more HR, that´s about it. Adrian has 26 H more than granderson wich completely overshadows him in avg. Adrian´s avg is almost 23% higher. Plus granderson has 22 more strikeouts.

Bautista is the one closer to adrian right now, IMO.

It was a no brainer the whole time. He mashed in a horrible hitters park; there was no telling what he would do in Fenway. I imagine you guys will look back and be very happy you didn't get that overpaid Texeira.
