its nice to see todays responses show i'm not crazy for thinking like this!!
some people just dont get the concept.
for instance when Hinny and i were in seattle we were trying to head to benaroya from where we were dropped off after the bus ride from vancouver. we asked a few people how to get there and most responses were to take the bus... we decided to hoof it instead of wait for a bus. everyone would tell us, its not in walking distance, theres no way you can walk there etc.
we were there in 10 minutes! and thats with big travel backpacks on!!!
like its said in the story of b, if we're going to save the world its only going to be if we change minds and our way of thinking.
maybe if youre too much of a bitch to handle walking for five minutes in the cold then you shouldnt live in fucking chicago. oh no its ok coz we all have heated SUVs that we can drive in just remember that one barrel of crude oil holds 42 gallons but yields merely 19 gallons of gas 28 PEOPLE HOLD THE SAME AMOUNT OF BLOOD the next time you fill up your car to drive what you could walk in five minutes do the math on how many gallons of blood the over 4000 us soldiers and 1.5 million iraqis have died since 2003 hold.
but you're from vancouver, its always sunny there isnt it?
Example - my kids' home school is a no bus school. All houses are within a 10 block radius. We're on the far end of that - 10 blocks away. My daughter rides her bike, younger son goes on his scooter, always accompanied by one of us parents. When we arrive at school - there is a line of cars going out into the street. Some of these folks have driven two or three blocks to sit in line and waste gas!
So when the kids were creating their own "laws" for a government unit, my little girl created her "law" that you must walk or ride a bike if:
* the trip is less than a mile
* you are not handicapped or elderly
* you do not have small children
She had her law passed by the other students. Mommy was so proud
cute!
raising a little environmental lawyer are ya?
It doesnt end there though... my bigger pet peeve is people taking an elevator for 1 or 2 floors. I'm sure walking up those flights of stairs is just too much to handle.
I've walked and biked to work for the past four years, I love it, I don't depend on a car or public transportation. It takes anywhere from 20-40 minutes, time that I would otherwise be spending in traffic anyways. Sure its horrible in the winter and sometimes I may jump on the bus, but after all I do live in Ottawa, which I'm sure can compare to Chicago winters
i've worked in ottawa in the winter ... tried biking one year but my gears wouldn't work nor my brakes ... it was fun but in the end - it was too much of a slog ...
I live in a 3 floor building....and see people taking the elevator all the time!
i love the opposite in europe..
north americans baffled that people actually rely on the stairs with there not being many 'lifts' over there.
so many hostels people would be like, WHAT? NO ELEVATOR?
ahah.
that made me laugh... and i'm assuming that fuck you was a lighthearted "i really am not offended at your point" fuck you
Actually it wasn't "lighthearted" at all........it was more of a mind your own business..........and let me live my own life to my standards and not yours.......I'll let my car sit and idle all afternoon if i choose to.......

oh god, i don't have to post the stereotypical 'its me and my family and friends and world that is going to get cancer from the pollution so it is my business' comment do i - that's usually a given.
let me guess, Escalade and a one-size-too-small affliction t-shirt? yah, you're a waste of oxygen if you're going to give me the "mind your own business" rebuttle.
and of course you can choose to do that, just as much as you can choose to be ignorant, choose to be lazy, choose to be irresponsible. so you don't have to tell other people to fuck off when they get irritated by ass holes, if you choose to be one then well, i guess that is the standard you're setting for yourself.
I walk to work every day I can, and it's about a 20 minute walk. I drive in when I work the night shift, just because I don't like walking into work at 23:30... Potentially too dangerous, and when you work Security and tell people not be that stupid, you shouldn't either. A lot of people are shocked that I walk in, and I frequently turn down rides home... But I love walking! I also walk downtown all the time, which is about a 30-40 minute walk from my house. I have too much Scottish in me to justify driving a distance I can walk and paying to park.... There are times when my car sits in the driveway and only gets used once a week, to drive to my brother's house.

haha, that's awesome.
school is a bit far away so i take public transit. but when i go out to get groceries, errands in the area etc done i walk. i also have a 80 lb dog who will make me feel guilty... i work and go to school and spend most of my spare time doing homework, she doesn't get walked as much as she should so i try to walk wherever i can so she can come along
oh yah, and i prefer not to pollute whenever i can - imagine that! what a concept...
-i guess i'm not like the cool kids and let my car idle.
ooh yah shuffle and continuous repeat!
not to mention walking playlists... running playlists etc!
there's a harsh winter season here in new england so i do most of my walks about 3 months a year. fall is way too chilly and spring rains too much...the variety is nice that way...

haha, everything you described happens in about 36 hours in vancouver...
i've seen snow sun rain hail overcast wind and sun again all in the same day! but then again it is a place wehre you can ski and swim in the same day as well... this place is confused!

yeah but your "own standards" or so you call them affect the rest of us negatively, all of us, like the entire world. so technically they're not you're own standards and if you can't see that then not only are you ignorant, you're a fucking idiot.

I'd be more concerned about who is dumping what into your drinking water and what mill or other industrial plant is pumping god knows what into the air.........than i would about.......car exhaust.........ever see a semi take off from a dead stop........I'd worry about those before cars........even trains.......now if you don't mind i'm going to stand outside for a half an hour.....spray some aerosol into the atmosphere.......fuck the ozone layer.......

hahaha, thats the worst argument i've ever heard.
like saying, i've lost both my legs i might as well just cut off my fingers as well.
and i am concerned about who is dumping what in my drinking water - but why make it worse? and ps, its not just an environmental thing... if you are an able bodied person that cannot walk one block without taking your car then the only thing you and your standards represent is a sad fucking state that our society is coming to.

i used to work at a job that was under a mile from my home. i drove every day. why? b/c i had too much shit to bring back and forth - i was an art teacher - and b/c i far preferred sleeping later and only having a 5 minute commute as opposed to a 15-20 minute walk.
however, i have ALWAYS preferred walking when time allows. i LOVE living in a community with many things that are 'walkable'...and in my current job, i LOVe that i never use my car. i walk to/from the train station and to/from my office. it's fantastic.

see when you have a reason its fine, too much stuff to carry you need a car, youre not driving for the sake of driving or because youre too lazy.

Arizona summers can be a bitch, and even in a car it takes forever to get anywhere here.
I miss my old college town. Being able to walk literally everywhere, not worrying about cars, gas, etc. That was great!
plus, you can observe life in its full nature, it feels so good...

nature is pleasant!
i also carried portable CD player, a walkmen-type.
now with all the iPods and mp3 players, the walks can be everlasting...
