UFC 90 bonuses: Riley, Gurgel, Stephens and Hazelett each earn $60K

Aaron Riley, Jorge Gurgel, Jeremy Stephens and Dustin Hazelett each earned $60,000 "fight night" bonuses for their performances at "UFC 91: Couture vs. Lesnar."

UFC 91 took place Saturday at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, and aired live on pay-per-view. The bonus amounts were slightly lower than the $65,000 awards issued at UFC 90 in October.

The UFC announced the bonuses at the UFC 91 post-fight press conference and were confirmed by MMAjunkie.com.

The evening's fourth bout, originally scheduled for the un-aired portion of the card, between lightweights Aaron Riley and Jorge Gurgel was a razor-thin decision that could have gone to either fighter. For 15 minutes the pair stood toe-to-toe and traded heavy shots on the feet. The effort was applauded by the fans, and though Riley edged out Gurgel for the unanimous decision win, the two each collected bonuses for putting on the "Fight of the Night."

Lightweight Jeremy Stephens survived two rounds of frustration from UFC newcomer Rafael dos Anjos en route to a stunning stoppage that earned him "Knockout of the Night." The Brazilian UFC rookie managed the fight well from the mat in the first two rounds. But in the final frame an uppercut thrown from Stephens' back pocket found it's mark, and dos Anjos was out before he hit the mat.

Hazelett secured his second career "Submission of the Night" award in his first-round win over Tamdan McCrory. Hazelett survived an early onslaught of punches and low kicks from his aggressive opponent before working the fight to the floor. Once on the mat, Hazelett quickly utilized his flexibility in working towards an omo plata. McCrory remained patient in looking to escape the lock, but Hazelett transitioned it to a straight arm-bar to force the tap at 3:59 of the opening frame.

  • I think they need to incorporate a Super Heavyweight division for Lesnar

He outweighed Couture by 50-60lbs ?

This reminded me of the old UFC when anyone and everyone fought each other

I know the other heavyweights the weight wont be that far apart but he's fighting at 280lbs

    Great night of fights overall

Stephens of course the KO of the night..anyone else think Florian looks like Ben Stiller ?? Especially in the interviews before the fight

it was a great night of fights! i had to stay up and watch it again. :)

yeah, they were estimating that brock was back to about 280 by fight time. they changed the unified rules this year to include more weight classes, but i'm not aware of any regulatory bodies that have implemented them. with beasts like lesnar, antonio silva, and shane carwin making their way into HW divisions, the 205-265 gap should be narrowed for sure. then again, randy beat a 280 lbs. 6'8" giant in tim sylvia, so i guess it depends on the athlete too.

funny you mention the ben stiller thing...i think it was goldberg who said that when kenny interviewed rich franklin in montreal..."ben stiller in the octagon talking to jim carrey..." :D
  • Best PPV they ever had!

Fight of the night : Dustin Hazelett Vs. Tamdan McCrory Crazy Sub. I watched that fight five more times today.

Lesnar looked good. Randy just got caught and thats the bottom line. He controlled lesnar the 1st round great. To bad there wont be a rematch for atleast a little while
    Tour with fucking NOFX

yeah, i'd be hard pressed to think of another card that was as entertaining from top to bottom for sure!...and they showed every fight this time! :)

hazelett vs. mccrory was my favourite from the show as well. it's good to see some of the lesser known fighters getting some air time on a huge PPV. bocek vs. robinson was another that i've watched a few times now, and of course demian maia's performance against nate quarry. (just because i like demian! :D)
  • I still cant stop thinking about that PPV. The only beef I have with it is, Brock didnt deserve a title shot.

haha, that's funny, I called him Ben Stiller during the fight...then changed it to Scott Bakula....

i'm with you still. this is one i'll watch over and over again. overall, i think the majority of people were very satisfied with the show. it's safe to say that a card that may have appeared weak on paper certainly was not weak on fight night.

i've read all kinds of strange statements today, though, like people complaining that some of the fights only lasted a round, that the main card was so weak that they had to put the shitty undercard fights on instead, people who were happy they didn't spend money on such a crappy PPV when they didn't even watch it!?!...etc. etc. it's baffling to me, but i guess you can't please everyone. maybe some of them have the idea that you're only paying for the main event when you get an mma show. i don't know. mma "fans" are a weird bunch sometimes!

yeah, i can certainly see your issue with brock challenging for the title. i can see the arguments on both sides that have merit. i don't think any other weight division would have had someone get a title shot so quickly at the moment. i guess it all depends on the state of the division and level of talent in it at the time. penn got a title shot in his fourth pro fight because the LW division wasn't what it is today and he was an incredibly talented guy. couture also got a shot in his fourth fight, but again, those were different days. david terrell got a title shot in his second UFC fight because he ko'd matt lindland.

in this case, i think there were a number of factors. werdum probably had the best claim to a title shot at one point and a rematch with nogueira would have been fantastic, but they gave mir the shot after beating only hardonk and lesnar (being the former champ helps too;)). also, i don't think randy would have come back to fight werdum. it had to be something big like this fight to lure him back. the HW division is so shallow right now that it's hard to make a case for anyone else. at the very least, we'd probably be hearing the same arguments for and against others getting a shot. most of the other guys are the kind of fighters who could potentially beat each other on any given day and just alternate wins and losses, which is what a lot of them have been doing.

    another factor..."$" :D

This was the first time I picked up the PPV special for UFC. It was awesome! I enjoyed it almost as much as watching Tyson back in the day. I can't remember the guys fighting, but there was one fight when someones clock was cleaned by an uppercut. Couldn't watch enough of that replay. Definitely sparked my interest in UFC and created a follower in the process. Now I can enjoy catching up by watching all of the great fights from the past few years!

awesome! it's always good to hear from someone new to the sport on the show. you got a good one for sure! :)

yeah, jeremy stephens is an exciting fighter to watch in the LW division. so many LW fighters are. early in the bout, it looked like dos anjos might control it, but stephens had the equalizer with that monster uppercut! junior dos santos landed one that was almost identical against fabricio werdum at the last show, although werdum was walking into it when dos santos threw it. both have been replayed many times, i'm sure.

enjoy catching up on the matches! :)
