    yes mooks good fights are much more entertaining than studying! :D;) now I am being distracted by WEC fights.

    but I only have 6 more days until VACATION!!! not that I am counting or anything.

    doesn't help that there was an ad for the movie "death sentence" on the mat either, eh? personally, i thought a break to check heath's cuts would have been appropriate, but instead it went on and babalu got his now infamous career ending choke...meaning ending his own career in the ufc.

    Now on to TUF7. I HAAAAAAAATE Rampage soooo hard!!! He's a cocky, arrogant SOB and I want someone to knock him out sooo bad!!! I like Forrest Griffen tho, so I'll watch it for him hahaha.

    I read about Joe Stephenson vs PJ Penn for the lightweight belt...HELL YES!! I LOOOOVE both fighters so I'm going to be pretty torn in this one.

    Lastly soooo sad to see Big John go :( Its not going to be the same without hearing him say "lets get it on!" before a fight.

    what's with no spike tv in the hotels!?! too raunchy i guess. :D

    i'm happy to hear you finally got to see the show...you could have been there live, though...;) there were indeed some excellent fights, and i'm still watching guida vs. huerta often. i had high expectations for that one, and it's not often that one's high expectations are exceeded in a match! hats off to both guys - agreed! :)

    you'll grow to love rampage, i'm sure. he's like fungus, only with more one liners and a junk yard dog chain.

    The upside for "Big" John McCarthy is that he'll be able to watch both fighters from start to finish.

    Mixed martial arts' most famous third man has traded his regular spot in the Octagon for a seat on press row.

    The legendary Ultimate Fighting Championship ref -- who made his debut, at UFC 2, 13 years ago and helped write the MMA rulebook -- was baptized into the world of broadcasting last night, adding colour to Mauro Ranallo's play-by-play of TKO 31: Young Guns for The Fight Network.

    The 6-foot-4, 260-lb. McCarthy, a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt who has a bigger fan club than many fighters, says the time was right to jump into something new.

    "It was an opportunity I couldn't pass up," says McCarthy of his Fight Network deal.

    The former L.A. cop, who trained under the famous Gracie banner for years, says there are many benefits to his new vantage point.

    "A referee does not get to watch the fight the same way a fan does," explains McCarthy, who has reffed more than 500 scraps and 100 championship fights.


    "You start off watching both fighters and as things progress, you realize, 'this guy's starting to eat it more than the other guy.' So you start watching one side of the fight more than you do the other because you're watching out for the safety of the fighter. You're not watching to see all the great shots."

    McCarthy admits he's collected a lifetime of memories in his time with the UFC.

    "The thing I'll remember the most is the fighters," says McCarthy. "I was lucky enough to see them in a way the fans don't. Sometimes they put on the facade of the tough guy and I was able to talk to them and see them for real. I saw the fears they had."

    Though he's reffed some of the defining moments in the UFC, he points to the Clay Guida/Tyson Griffin war in Ireland and the two fights between Ontario's Sam Stout and Spencer Fisher as among the more memorable of his career.

    ST. PIERRE THE BEST

    "It's the lighter weight guys I enjoyed watching more than the heavier guys," he says, adding Canadian welterweight Georges St. Pierre is the best fighter on the planet in his opinion.

    McCarthy, best known for his trademark "Let's Get it On" chant that kicked off nearly every major war in UFC history, says his famed battle cry was born the day he reffed his first UFC fight in March of 1994.

    He remembers promoter Art Davie telling him to come up with something sexy to start the fights.

    "I told Art, I got one guy standing on one side of the cage, another guy on the other and they're going to beat the hell out of each other. How about 'let's get it on,'" says McCarthy. "Art loved it and it kinda stuck."

    Will anyone else be adopting McCarthy's "Let's Get it On" call to action?

    "It's on the shelf," he says.

    TKO 31 will be available on pay-per-view Jan. 4.

    hahaha . . . when I was watching the finale my friend noticed this. I'm fairly certain it's a tattoo . . . otherwise warmachine's got a scary fungal infection.

    ST-PIERRE LOOKING SHARP IN TRAINING

    MMAWeekly.com was on location to observe a traditional Friday sparring session at the Tri-Star gym in Montreal, Canada. On hand were Georges St-Pierre, Rashad Evans, Denis Kang, Patrick Cote, Jonathan Goulet, David Loiseau, David Pariseau, Jacob MacDonald, Steve Claveau and more.

    Coaches Greg Jackson and Mike Van Arsdale were also there to supervise the proceedings. From an on-lookers vantage point, it seemed clear that Jackson is St-Pierre’s closest advisor these days.

    The initial pairings as directed by Coach Jackson included Evans versus St-Pierre and Loiseau versus Kang. The fighters began by working mainly their striking and occasionally shooting in for a takedown attempt. Every five minutes they would take a short rest and find a new partner for the next round.

    Of note, not one fighter (including Evans) was able to take down St-Pierre and it definitely wasn’t because of a lack of effort. On the other hand, it looked as though St-Pierre took everyone down almost at will with probably a 95% success ratio.

    St-Pierre’s standup also looked crisp. Although he doesn't throw a lot of combinations, the strikes he does throw land clean and often. Perhaps one minor note of criticism is that his feet are not always grounded thus reducing the amount of weight behind his strikes.

    There was also some speculation around the gym, although St-Pierre did not confirm this, that he had actually been anticipating the possibility of Serra pulling out of the fight and thus had been going through his regular intensive training rituals for 12 weeks leading up to the fight. This is interesting because his Dec. 29 opponent, Matt Hughes has repeatedly stated that one of the factors he chose to take the fight was that because he felt St-Pierre may not have had sufficient time to prepare. If what St-Pierre’s teammates are saying is true, Hughes may be in for a bit of a surprise.


    CATCHING UP WITH DENIS KANG

    MMAWeekly.com also caught up with Denis Kang after the sparring session was over. Kang mentioned that if he had a choice, he would be living and training right now with American Top Team in Florida. Unfortunately, due to some visa issues, he may be unable to enter back into the United States for some time. Therefore, he decided to visit with St-Pierre for a few weeks before heading back to Vancouver, British Columbia, where he will remain until his visa issues get sorted out.

    He was expecting to fight on the K-1 Dynamite card this New Year’s Eve, but only recently learned that it was not to be. He speculates that his next fight will be on a K-1 Hero’s event scheduled for March.

    Asked about the Ultimate Fighting Championship, Kang commented that he and his manager did everything they could to seal a deal with the UFC. They waited on an offer, which they received and were pretty happy with. K-1, however, showed how badly they wanted Kang by tripling the UFC offer. He went back to the UFC to give them an opportunity to match, but it just wasn’t in the cards. Kang is currently on a multiple fight contract, which likely precludes him from fighting in the UFC for at least the next year.

    Asked about his thoughts on the upcoming Hughes/St-Pierre fight at UFC 79, Kang responded, “I think Georges is looking really sharp right now. I just don't see what Hughes can do to him this time around. It will probably be a lot like their last fight."


    BIG JOHN COMES TO CANADA

    Highly regarded MMA referee Big John McCarthy was in attendance for TKO 31 as he and Mauro Ranallo worked the broadcast booth for the Fight Network’s pay-per-view scheduled to air on Canadian television in January.

    At the TKO weigh-ins, it was almost comical to see the reaction amongst fans and fighters to McCarthy’s presence. There were more people (including fighters) lined up to talk to him and take a picture with him than any of the athletes actually competing on the TKO card. It was definitely an impressive testament to the respect everyone in the MMA community has for the legendary UFC referee, turned full time broadcaster.

    His good friend and fellow referee Yves Lavigne remarked, “You ain’t seen nothing yet! Wait until you get a load of the things Big John has planned. It’s going to be really big and it’s going to be great for the sport!”

    “It’s been great being here,” remarked McCarthy. “Everyone seems so nice and I’m really impressed by the TKO event. Merci Beaucoup Montreal!”
