i believe this is not the first time that the corby family has taken drugs into Bali. it just happens to be the 1st time they got caught. they have all travelled to bali several time, and the sister has been living there for years. they knew the penalty as it's very clearly signed in bali that traffickers can receive death. whether or not this is right or wrong it's Indonesian law, it might be harsh or fucked, but there are plenty of other laws in other countries that are worse. and you are clearly warned when travelling to bali. i think she took the rap for the drugs, thinking that they wouldn't put a "good looking young aussie girl" in prison. they were wrong.
and can i just say, you Americans have no idea what happens outside your own country and you see one 3 hour special on HBO and you all of a sudden become experts.
you guys should worry more about things happening in your own country like kids going to school and shooting each other.

Whether Schappelle is guilty or innocent, Indonesia and Indonesian law would have a lot more credibility with me if Abu Bakar Bashir hadn't only received a 2 year sentence for masterminding the Bali Bombings.
A girl gets 20 years for smuggling marijuana
A man who masterminds the deaths of 100s of innocent people and gets only 2 years?
No credibility. None.
Indonesian law has no credibillity whatsoever. I do believe Schapelle is guilty but to suggest she is 10 times the criminal Bashir is, a total disgrace. It just seems they were very happy to make a strong example of a Westerner and when I saw them all cheering when her sentence was handed down I thought it was disgusting. I am aware of their laws and I will never set foot in that country for as long as I live
Why do people with closed minds always open their mouth
That's right. They have some serious problems with their judicial system. Whether she is guilty or not, 20 years is very harsh.
Personally I feel that her family are fucking odd bods, the brother, the sister, the father or Shapelle would have to have had something to do with it I.M.O.
Well I guess we'll never know for sure. Only Schappelle really knows if she's guilty or not, although I agree that the laws in these countries are very clear, 20 years is very harsh. However if she's not guilty it's a massive travesty of justice as far as I can see given that in my opinion trafficking marijuana is a much lesser crime than blowing up 100s of innocent people to send a message of terror. I'd have a lot more respect for the Indonesia judiciary if their sentencing was consistent.
It always freaks me out though when I think about the people I know and what and who could come out of the woodwork supposing I found myself in a similar situation. I don't think it's reasonable to assume her guilt or innocence based on the company she keeps or her relatives. If she didn't have anything to do with it and someone in her family knows all about it and are still letting her rot, then they're a bunch of sick fucks entirely.

Yes, much and all as I'd love to go back to Bali and I think the Balinese are lovely, I can well do without being under the auspices of Indonesian law and order. I mean let's face it, it's not like they have been able to suitably protect their citizens or tourists from terrorist activities but then I don't think they're really trying too hard. Frankly given just how easy it's been for terrorist organizations to exist and operate within Indonesian borders it's fairly apparent that they're as close to condoning terrorism as you can be and still be considered a legitimate government.
I would love to be able to go back and enjoy the country and support its people but it's just too risky. Been there, done that and given the actions and support that the government has given to terrorist organizations, I won't be back.

I went there a year before the Bali bombings, it is indeed a beautiful place but like you, I cannot condone the actions of their govt and would never feel safe there again. I however never felt the warmth of the people, to me the vast majority were only ever nice because they saw us westerners as having money and as someone who would buy whatever it was they were selling. One day there these kids out the front were begging me for money, I felt really bad for them so I took them all to get some food, they wanted to eat Mcdonalds. I looked after them totally for that day and the following day rather than show me any respect they came out begging just like they did the previous day. Another man who I wouldn't buy shoes off gave me the most evil stare and spat at my feet. It surely wasn't a place I felt welcomed

Totally agree!!
She did the crime and must do the time. Whether we think 20 years is too long or not....she knew she was risking being put to death, so at the end of the day, she's probably lucky she only got the 20 years.
I've been to Bali quite a few times and have had family live there for years.....the laws are VERY clear and anyone who's been there (as the Corbys had, many times) would know this.
I'm so sick of her and her family being all over the TV here
Honestly...if all you've seen is that stupid documentary....you have no idea.
Yes, there have never been unjust laws in the whole history of mankind. They are all rationale and just. Maybe you should crack open a history book some day and actually read a little. The only reason unjust laws have ever been changed is because people fought back against them.
There is nothing wrong with marijuana. There is plenty wrong with the laws surrounding it. No, I won't be moving on. I fight the good fight regardless of the ignorance or odds I am up against. I just use guerrilla tactics is all.
For every person against pot being illegal, you'll find a person for it. It's a never ending battle.
Here's a suggestion for you to 'fight your good fight'......fill a boogie board bag with dope and go to Bali!!

Kuta? Just curious because there was most certainly some people I could do without in Kuta and a lot of the time I did feel that I was like a giant walking dollar sign. The children begging drove me nuts but I'd been warned not to engage them, so apart from a couple attempts to steal my stuff, they mostly left me be. I found though that going into the mountains and just dealing with people away from the touristy spots, that the Balinese themselves were lovely.
But not lovely enough for me to risk my personal safety dealing with a corrupt government with an axe to grind with me purely because of where I come from.

Yes I stayed in Kuta, a big mistake. The one place I really liked there was Ubud and at the time I really intended to return there, but my opinion has changed now
Why do people with closed minds always open their mouth
You'll find that 99% of the time, the 'un-friendly' types in Bali are actually Javanese. The Balinese people are beautiful people and I've never come across a rude one in my visits there:) The Javanese are totally different :(

I think we're very much in agreement here Pedge. I had intended to return also but not now. Just not worth it to me.
Well a Balinese guy named Ketut banged on my door at 7am after I'd had a huge night on the drink asking me if I wanted to go on a tour, that was pretty damn rude
Yeah from memory some of the Javanese people hated us Westerners and it made it quite uncomfortable at times. They even used a dodgy calculator to convert my Australian dollar over and tried to rip me off, lucky I was good at maths and was alert to their scam. I had some crazy experiences in my 2 weeks there

I'd try educating you on the subject but I think I'd have better luck trying to convince a koala to not be cute. There were people that were for and against slavery as well and for a long time the people in the right also happened to be in the minority. It is so strange having this conversation at all. It's like the issue of gay marriage. I constantly have to look at a calendar to remind myself what year it is as it seems we as a species ought to be so far past these issues by now. They shouldn't even be a blip on the radar.
However, the other side of me knows that the more cruel, ignorant, and illogical a believe is, the more likely you will have people defending it.
Anyway, I have gone against my personal philosophy on this board by even engaging in this conversation. I know better than to try changing a person's mind. I simply bypass laws I don't agree with. I do it smart and I won't ever see the inside of a jail cell.

ahhh the dodgy money exchangers LOL! I think MOST of them are dodgy and it's a rule of thumb to take your OWN calculator (don't use theirs) and double check what you're owed and count and double count what they give you
you have got to be the most ignorant, ill-informed space cadet ive ever come across on this forum!!
My older brother has severe depression and has ongoing phsyc appointments because of his pot use that stems back to when he was 13years old.
If you say that theres nothing wrong with pot...then im Eddie Vedder.

Finally someone has pointed out the negatives of this drug. It is awful to hear about your brother but that is reality. And for this Muppet to say otherwise is a joke and shows how misinformed some people are.
I was friends with this guy at school. He was smart, funny, athletic, really good at soccer and wasn't the ugliest guy going round either.
HE got hooked on the shit, and now he walks around like a zombie. He has tried rehab but it didn't work. Every time I see him he is lifeless. And now for a young man who really did have the world at his feet, he is working in a pizza hut call centre.

Its awful, isnt it...just because it grows in the ground people think its not that bad...but in realiy, if used to excess it can have such a detrimental effect on ones life....
My brother has no motivation and lets his personal hygeine take a back seat, he is beyond help, we have tried everything...but the pot has just fried his brain. For people to think that pot is harmless is just plain ignorance and stupidity....
Thanks for your words...nice to know im not the only one who thinks like this

I think it has alot to do wih all the other "hard-core" drugs that are around at the moment....pot has taken a back seat and not looked on as so bad...
When I was about 13 my Mum found out I had been smoking a bit of pot and she completely hit the roof...and at school also, if you were having a joint on the oval everyone thought you were such a rebel and a real druggie. Alot of my friends smoke it socially and they think that its just like having a cigg, and I think we have become complacent about it, you know?
Because of ICE and Coke...pot has become almost acceptable, and I think its wrong...its still a drug.
