It's not so much that they're "expected" to sleep at certain times. It's that they actually get sleepy at certain times and they get better sleep (in most cases) if you have them on a pretty consistent schedule. The same goes for adults...but we don't build naps into our schedule. The thing is, sometimes kids don't seem sleepy but they are...they just get weird and hyper when they're sleepy...lol.

yeah I get that, I just feel bad that they don't have the power/ability to say hey, mum, I'm just not tired today and I don't want to be in my bed!

I don't really get why they don't just pass out on the floor or the chair or something when they get tired. I mean, nothing is stopping them. that's what I would do!

Well...some do just crash wherever they are. But most just get totally manic and crazy if you don't sort of wind them down and put them in a relaxing environment in which they can go to sleep.

She is a year and a half. Normally she takes a bottle and goes right to sleep, and stays that way for 2 hours solid. But yesterday and today she is not having it. I can't let her into the workout room . if I 'm on the tredmill she will try to climb up and that can be trouble .

how many naps does she usually take in a day? it's possible she's ready to give up one of those. they go through such stages.

i would buy a playpen or one of those activity/ jumper-thingys ( http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2585699 )and bring her into the workout room with you. she'll have fun watching you and be safe and entertained at the same time. maybe you can even put on blue's clues for her. my son (1 yr old) LOVES that freakin' show. :)
