I don't text (I don't even have a cell phone, but if I did, I still wouldn't text, unless it was cheaper than calling, haha).

I get unlimited free texts ;)

    £30 a month.

I'm pay and go so I top up £30 credit and get unlimited texts as well as the £30 of calls.

I also get free downloads and free facebook time.

... AND I get 10% of my topped up credit back every three months (last month I got £10 back)

oh! and when I lost my phone last week, I got £30 off the cost of a new handset because i'm a 'loyal and valued customer' :p

I have a pay and go phone too, but it's been deactivated for, um, 5 or 6 years. I used it actively for about a year. Better than contract, but I have almost no use for them.

I text everyone. My family, friends, co-workers. Hell even my landlord texts me.

Usually its for little information, so you don't have to make chit chat, but get a question answered or information out. It's like email. I will arrange get togethers, send jokes, or communicate with people at times when I can't be on the phone..

I agree. I like talking on the phone but, I hate small talk. Texts are also wonderful for just saying "I'm thinking about you". No need to call and interrupt. Everything has its place and of course everything can be abused..

How does anyone NOT text these days?

It's a lot cheaper than a call for a start, and a lot easier to do when busy.

its actually an awful deal your using. I recently got a 3 contract. they gave me the smartest phone i've ever owned and for £20 or so i get unlimted texts and so many minutes phone calls.

my wife is on Orange and she pays £15 per month, got a new Samsung U800 phone that does everything and for that £15 a month its unlimited texts and 100 minutes call time.

a call is the same price as a text? well it is on my network. 12p per minute or 12p per text is the charge.

Aye but it normally takes me more than 1 minute to say in speech what I can in a single text, what with the lure of digression and random small-talk. I can't afford to spend precious money on mere humans.

Also, I fear my calls are 20p per minute to my 12p per text.

fair enough amigo.. all networks are different and stuff arent they.

    my phone conversations are normally

    "coming oot the night?"

    "aye"

    "right see you at 8pm"

    "aye"

Aye well, being at university, I have to phone my parents once in a while to indicate my continued existence. I normally one-tone them and get them to phone back but sometimes they don't and I have to spend credit discussing stuff like the price of lager in London and my increasing distaste for students :o:p

Also, any Goodfellas reference in a random thread = win :)

I like texting. Then you don't have to spend time with the extraneous stuff about 'how are you bla bla bla' before you can cut to the purpose of the communication.

I probably use my phone for texting about 80% of the time and only 20% of the time actually calling people. I hate talking on the phone.

I'm not a fan of phone chatting either.

Face-to-face conversation is still the best way of communication.

Yes but 3 have awful coverage in the Midlands and do not have UK based call centres, o2 do... added bonus, not only do the people you speak to at o2 speak with a discipherable English accent, but they also know what they're talking about.... oooooh, imagine! (Dave is on 3, I've heard his rantings about their poor service)

Out of interest, how much (once you've gone over your so many minutes calls) are your calls per minute?

    Mine are 2p flat rate.

I also have a rather nice, smart phone which does eevrything, that I bought with my discount thanks to being a loyal customer.

oh, and i'm not tied into an 18 month contract I don't want to be in.

    Win-win all round for me.
