Asante Samuel - DB - Patriots
The St. Petersburg Times "has it on good authority" that free agent Asante Samuel will sign with the Eagles.
In the last hour, there were all kinds of unsubstantiated reports coming out of Philly that the sides have a deal in place. The Birds may wait a few more hours or (ugh) until tomorrow to announce the agreement formally. Feb. 29 - 12:13 am et

The Jets are reportedly poised to make free agent G Alan Faneca a deal averaging $8 million per season.
Interestingly, the NY Daily News notes that the Jets are expected to "outbid the Rams and 49ers," neither of which we've heard linked to Faneca. Niners GM Scot McCloughan is outspokenly opposed to giving guards monster contracts. The Rams are needy there, but in poor salary cap condition. Feb. 29 - 12:27 am et
That's what I was thinking. I had ESPNews on at midnight hoping for some news but so far nada. Hopefully Sportsnite has something at 1am but considering there are no official reports anywhere yet, it's looking like it won't be announced until tomorrow. I will miss Lito if he goes.

I like Lito as well, but Samuel would be nice
Let's just hope they do something !

SAINTS SNAG VILMA
Tom Rock of Newsday reports that the Jets have struck a deal with the Saints for linebacker Jonathan Vilma.
Vilma will go to New Orleans, apparently for a conditional pick in the 2009 draft.
The conditional nature of the selection suggests that there are lingering concerns about Vilma's knee.
Dolphins signed G Justin Smiley, formerly of the 49ers, to a five-year, $25 million contract. The deal included a $9 million signing bonus. Feb. 29 - 12:43 am et

Taking to the air: Vikings flying Berrian in for visit
His jet does not get the publicity in NFL circles that Daniel Snyder’s does, but that doesn’t mean Zygi Wilf’s wings will not get it done.
The Minnesota Vikings sent Wilf’s personal aircraft to California Thursday night to pick up free-agent wide receiver Bernard Berrian, prompting one league insider to suggest a contract is already in place.
Berrian will meet with Vikings officials at the club’s Winter Park, Minn., facility Friday and a huge contract could be finalized before he leaves the building.
Losing Berrian would crush the Bears, who badly hope to retain him, and losing him to a division rival in need of a deep threat to open up an offense led by running backs Adrian Peterson and Chester Taylor would be even worse.
There has been some bad blood between the clubs when it comes to player movement in recent years, although the Vikings’ front office has turned over in part since the checked-box incident involving wide receiver D’Wayne Bates and the offer sheet Minnesota signed kicker Paul Edinger to in 2003.
Stay tuned because the action could be fast and furious now that free agency is here. The Bears are believed to be anxious to match a contract offer for Berrian to a certain point.
In addition to Bernard Berrian, free agent DE Justin Smith is believed to have set up a visit with the Vikings.
The Vikings will try to keep Berrian and Smith in Minnesota by locking them up right away. It'll be difficult, but the Vikings have deep pockets. They're also said to have FS Madieu Williams and FB Thomas Tapeh on their wish list. Feb. 29 - 1:04 am et

Someone familiar with the situation tells Newsday that free agent S Gibril Wilson is expected to sign a deal with the Raiders.
The deal would be for $6-6.5 million a year, more than he was initially thought to be seeking. It looks like Oakland will keep Michael Huff at strong safety in 2008, rather than move him to his more natural spot on the weak side. Feb. 29 - 1:14 am et
