Well here's Howard over the last 7 games (including that embarrassing PH strikeout the other night)... 24 at bats, 4 runs, 3 hits, 1 2B, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 4 walks, 12 Strikeouts .125 batting average (just 40 points below his season average). Projections for the year.... 28 HR, 74 RBI, 102 walks, 231 strikeouts, .163 batting average, well worth $10 mil a year, don't ya think???

Buster Olney has an out of the box theory that says the Phillies should try to trade Howard:

RYAN HOWARD, PHILLIES: The Phillies' first baseman won the Most Valuable Player Award in 2006, and he just won the largest arbitration award in history for a player in the three-year class, at $10 million a year. Right now, he's hitting .163 with six homers, 22 walks and 50 strikeouts in his first 123 at-bats, and yet you can bet that Howard's salary will be in the $12 million-$15 million range next year, and higher than that in 2010.

Here is a discussion worth having, if you are in the Phillies' front office. Is Howard, who turns 29 this fall, going to be a player in whom you want to invest a long-term deal -- somewhere from $80 million to $120 million? And do you think Howard will be worth his projected salaries in 2009 and 2010?

If the answers to those questions posed in the Phillies' smoke-filled rooms are "no," the best time for the Phillies to trade Howard is this summer -- when the marketplace is absolutely starved for power hitters, and when another team desperate for offense might be willing to give up a couple of good prospects for someone capable of generating 40 to 50 homers. The Phillies could add depth to their thin stable of young pitchers, and they could plow ahead and compete in 2008 and in the future with the team built around Jimmy Rollins and Chase Utley.

Also, Howard was upset last weekend that the fans are getting on him. I got a feeling that unless he breaks out of this slump soon - it's not going to be pretty this summer down at the Bank.

I read that earlier and its not a bad idea, as long as Howard has terrible numbers. The problem is, if the Phils trade him and he goes on to put up a pretty nice career, we'll never hear the end of it. But at this point, he's a power hitter and that's it. He's not much of a defensive player and he loves to strikeout, it's just getting worse instead of better.

Plus, the Phils still own his rights for a few more years, so they really don't have to do anything but go to arbitration and have the arbitrator decide on a salary number. Problem with that is the cost is going to go up no matter what Howard's numbers are.

yep, relax, relax when Howard's batting average has dropped every season he has been in the big leagues and he looks no where near coming out of his current slump....

    It's getting real bad

3 more K's last night for a grand total of 50 on the year !

Move him down in the lineup ?

I honestly don't think that would help. I mean he should be getting good pitches hitting between the two hottest players on the team. He's just swinging at bad pitches and not adjusting at all. I mean I watch his at bats and can basically call what pitches are coming and what he'll do. Pitchers throw inside and he swings, they throw a slider off the plate and he swings, the finally give him something to hit, and he looks at it.

Wow best describes how bad Howard is right now.

Let's compare this year with Howard's low point last year when he was HURT.

2007 - through 32 games (this was his low point - he hit a PH Grandslam the next day and then went on the DL)

    .198/.380/.374 19H, 96 ABs, 5HR, 19RBIs, 29BB, 39K .774 OPS

The amazing thing is he had a higher on base percentage than slugging percentage.

    2008 - through 36 games and Healthy

    .165/.285/.331 21H, 127 ABs, 6HR, 17 RBIs, 22BB, 51K .616 OPS

wow, 1 month into the season and people are talking that Burrell is a hero that needs to be resigned and that howard needs to go, with Burrell taking his spot in the field

welcome to Philly Ryan Howard :)

but seriously, burrell is a dog. it is May so the slide is coming just like every other year he has played in the league. he will be down to .260 by the first day of summer... and howard will be up to .250 with 17 homeruns

dont get me wrong, i am rooting for pat the bat, have been since the ydrafted him # overall. i am still waiting for that MVP type year they kept hyping up in his first 2-3 years in the league.

this howard slump is down right scary. he isnt even foul tipping pitches. not defending the plate with 2 strikes. not even coming close to the bal;l when he decides to swing. but i have faith in the big fella

no.. take away last nights game he's a pedestrian 4 for 21 (.190) with 2 HR and 4 RBI with 11 strikeouts. No MVP stretch there, just one great game after 6 so so ones... you want an MVP 7 game stretch go look at Lance Berkman's numbers.

Another good game by Howard last night. As much as I've been a critic of Howard this year, I made a bet with a friend of mine on May 11th when he was batting .171 that he would be over the Mendoza line on June 1st for a case of Sam Adams. So far it's looking good for me. :)

fully off the hook? no... but he's playing more consistently lately and that's what I want to see. He still needs to work on his defense, man is he terrible at times. And if he keeps his strikeouts to around 3 every 7 games, I'll be very happy :D

I didn’t think Ryan was worth the $10 mil anyway, I thought the Phillies offer of $7 mil was plenty justified.

I hadn’t heard anything about the late nights though. That’s not good.

And let me go on record as saying I am a huge Burrell fan. I really hope the Phils make him an offer. I understand he has said he will take a cut in order to stay in Philly.
Don't come closer or I'll have to go

0 for 5 every ball hit the the right side of the infield now a BA of .204

Joe- I hope that bet didn't hinge on him staying above .200 for the month of June :)

Nope, bet was won when I was in Hawaii and my friend dropped off the case of beer last weekend.

I was also smart enough not to go double or nothing with him. ;) This time the bet would have been him hitting .225 by July 1st.
