Ya know, I always had mostly strait hair. Rediculous undercut hair as a teen in the nineties. Long hair down past my the middle of my back and showed some curl at the ends. Then really short hair for a couple years, grew it out a few inches last year and... wtf - curly hair. My family asking what I did... I don't know, but I like it. I just never had this hair before. I guess my dad said the same thing happened to him, but he was alot youndger and has a total afro.

as a young child, i had fairly straight hair...bit of wave, but not much. in the 5th grade my mother MADE me get a perm, fuck if i know why. i didn't want one, but she insisted. i was an afro head, it was NOT pretty. this is also back in the day if serious chemicals. i still believe it somehow permanently altered my hair, b/c from that point on it was VERY wavy afterwards, and got curlier and curlier. and even with my hair overall being CURLY...i had sections that were quite straight. i have odd hair. so who knows what'll happen now? it's amazing how much you can change over time/age. i had light brown, barely wavy hair and dark brown eyes as a child. as an adult i have very dark brown curly hair, and hazel eyes...almost green. bizarre.
helen - the japanese straightening is kind of the opposite of a perm. i do believe it lasts longer though. altho for me, perms really were pretty permanent. the stylist told me it should last 6-8 months, depending on my hair and regrowth. i am hoping for 8 months. we shall see. i think i want to do it again when it does start going back/growing...but i also don't want to damage my hair. right now my hair is uber healthy...and it looks it and feels it....and i'd like to keep it that way. however, it is just so fun being so different, and yes...it's sooooo EASY!

Yeah, that eye thing is bizarre. Never heard of that.
So many women I know, that are 20+, aren't sure what their natural hair color is from all the dying.

yes, it is rather odd.
and i KNOW! that was a big part of me holding out on dye for so long. i am the youngest in my family, and i was the only one with visible greys ...and yea, who knew for certain what her natural hair color was. once you start coloring, i think it's hard to let it grow out....b/c it probably looks like shite. thus why i wanted to go au naturale. i guess when the time comes i can chop it all and let it grow in. for now though, i am trying to have fun with it....and yes, it makes my husband happy. i had NO idea he disliked me going grey so much. c'est la vie!

Your hair looks great! Really shiny and smooth. How long does th japanese straightening take? Do you have to blow your hair out at all?

5 hours. although i will say, it's not too bad really. and i personally think worth it. lasts for months and zero fuss on a daily basis.
and...nope, not at all! bout the only thing i *have* to do is wet my bangs down b/c when i sleep they get pushed to the sides so i have to get em back in place. otherwise, how you see me is what my hair looks like when i wake up. my curly hair NEVER did that. was usually a rat's nest that absolutely needed to be entirely picked through and air-dried....product added to keep it defrizzed and under control. right now, i really don't 'have' to use any product, b/c i usually put a wee bit of freida brilliant brunette smoothing creme, just to control any fly-aways, add a wee bit more sheen, and helps keep it straight-straight. it's funny now b/c if i wear a ponytail or a bun, my hair gets kinked. i've never had that with my curls...it's funny. only thing i miss is wearing my hair with a hairstick. i used to do that a lot, loved how it looked, but right now i don't like my hair with it. perhaps when i regain more of my length.

5 hours is a loooong time...but to have no fuss on a daily basis it would be well worth it. I can never get my hair super straight - it always gets wavy no matter what I do to it or what I use...so I'm definitely considering doing this. Can they do it on color treated hair?

it is. however, i looked at it as this: i would have stick-straight hair for a minimum of 6 months with NO work on my behalf. granted, i would never be bothered straightening my hair on my own, haha, but still. i cannot believe how easy it is. so even with my 'no-fuss' curly hair....i still spend WAY less time on it. even in the shower! washing my curly hair, then combing thru the conditioner, etc.....difficult. now, comb glides right thru my hair..done...presto! so it's 5 hours in one day, at most 2x a year....and no work the rest of the year. for me, i like that math.
and yes, i do believe they can. i'd look into it if i were you. if you really like your hair straight i think it's worth it, probably keep your hair in better condition too rahter than struggle with it daily. people have mentioned it's very damaging, but my stylist disagreed with that assessment. i just know for my own hair, it was healthy/curly......now it's healthy/straight. dunno if i get it done over and over if that will still be the case, but i'll see as i go along. my hair wasn't colored when i had it done, but it will be next time. also, definitely ask around and shop around. it IS pricey, but again, i think worth it. i know i really looked into it and my stylist happened to have the best pricing, to the tune of $100-$150 less than anywhere else.

I'm definitely gonna look into it. I think it's worth it - the amount of time that I spend "trying" to straighten my hair is ridiculous...and I'm sure the heat from my hair dryer and straightening iron is damaging for my hair - the process will probably make my hair healthier in the end! I'm pretty sure my salon does this - I'm going to ask my stylist about it the next time I go. Thanks!

I guess you've got a pic in this thread somewhere from the complements. I'll have to go check that out. My fiance has quite a bit of gray. She dyes it black, which I love, but the grays start to show up fairly soon after. This woman at a health food store told her that she needed to take a vitamin b5 supplement, and its actually seems to be working. The grays never bothered me, but there are way less since her last dying and its been twice as long as usual between dyings. She's happy. Early graying does run in her family, though, and that was something the health food lady asked.

hey, if i can handle it...anyone can. i think we've established my non-girly-girlness. haha. although i do love being pampered. manicures/pedicures/massages = BLISS! sure i like to pretty myself up, but i am far too lazy for too much of anything.
personally, i think you'd love the results. definitely share pics if/when you get it done! i had my hair ironed straight maybe 5-6 times over the last 1-2 years.....and the japanese straightening is waaayyyyyy better.

nah, no pics. i never post. just people who saw me on the this past pj tour.
B5 eh? do you happen to know the dosage? i'd be interested. i have more than just a few greys at this point. i've got a smattering about and one significant streak. again, i kinda liked it....but my husband did not. it may be a bit too late for vitamins to take effect, also at my age it may just be a done deal. however, i'd be interested in trying it. my entire family is prematurely greyed as well. i found my first grey at age 16. obviously, wasn't until my 30s that they kicked into high-gear, and i'd say late 30s especially kicked it up a notch. appreciate any info you have to offer.

500mg a day. The lady didn't give us an exact dosage. We just went and picked up a bottle of it at gnc. The family history and the streak are something she has too. She's 28 now, and found her first grays at 18 or so. It seems to be working very well.

i currently take centrum multivitamin, so i will see just how much B5 is in that. i don't like to over-supplement, b/c that can be bad too. so a multi-vitamin and fish oil are my 2 dailies....but i definitely will check into the B5. could be well worth it!
and yes, i am way past 28 ......39, turning 40 the end of this year! so always up for things that assist in aging well.

Well... for the aging thing, I hear that HGH(its not anabolic steriods) is the "fountain of youth"... its FDA APPROVED FOR: lower blood pressure, reducing body fat, reducing cellulite, improving vision, increasing bone density, accelerate wound healing, bla bla bla let me skip a few, GROW NEW HAIR AND RESTORE COLOR. I started a thread about HGH a while back; I was just trying to get some testimonials, and everyone here was against it. I'm working out and I'm going to take it. Everybody that I know that has taken it has really loved it. You may not be interested in that considering that you don't want to over supplement, but I thought I'd throw that in.

sounnds interesting and while i am an optimist and sure, a dreamer ...i still am a bit of a realist who follows the old 'if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.' i definitely am wary of over-supplementing and more 'unknown' things. quite honestly i've never heard of HGH...so while what you say sounds good, i most definitely would have to know a LOT more. more than likely tho, you're right, i'd skip it. don't like to do too much. appreciate the info tho and may read up on it. thanks for the B5 recommendation. that i might more readily give it a shot. if it actually helps reduce my grey hair...yay!
WOW  I'm DEFINITELY looking into that Japanese straightening... I much prefer my hair straight but, at the mo, I'm destroying my hair from the constant blowdrying/straightening so this sounds fantastic
I'm also looking into the vitamin B5 have one or two greys starting to appear

oh how quickly minds change.
a while back i had a poll about striahgt/curly hair....getting ideas, opinions...and you told me straight hair was kinda boring. perhaps you were trying to make me feel good about my curls? i loved my curls in any case...but change is good! and fun!
and yes, if you truly prefer your hair straight, i'd definitely look into the japanese straightening. i NEVER blow dry. i never did curly either, but if wanted anything besides curls, i would have to. now....just straight, easy!

Let me introduce you to the Ojon Restorative Hair treatment. Your hair will never be the same. It's not cheap, but it's amazing! I also really like the shine serum.
I bought my first little tub of the stuff in NYC at Sephora and I swear by it. You rub the stuff into an oil and rub it all over your hair. I toss my hair into a shower cap and leave it on for 20 minutes. The smell is kind of strong, reminds me of hippie (in a good way) slightly musky, patchoulli, very natural. Then shampoo it out. But it leaves my hair SOOOO shiny and sleek and even my hairdresser is absolutely amazed. I use it once a week or even every 2 weeks so a little goes a long way. Well worth the price.

I shaved my head last year--no, not on a drunken outing. I did chemo, and shaved it pre-emptively (I am sure that is not spelled correctly, but WTH).
Anyhoo...I ended up with this new cowlick right in the front of my head. It wasn't so bad during the "pixie" stage, but as it has grown out, it ends up looking like Donald Trumps bangs at the end of the day. A BIG swoosh.
My stylist told me/showed me that if I use a round brush and roll it the way the cowlick is going (back, in my case), it will lay flat. What?!? It actually worked. I had been trying to make it go the opposite way, which did nothing.
Not that anyone else is planning on shaving their heads, but this should work for any cowlick, or funky area.
Take care,
I still want you all to "take care"--I am just damn tired of typing it.
that's as close to me really posting a pic of myself here as will ever happen.
can't really see the highlights too much in the pic, but they are there and a lot more visible from the front.

Well... for the aging thing, I hear that HGH(its not anabolic steriods) is the "fountain of youth"... its FDA APPROVED FOR: lower blood pressure, reducing body fat, reducing cellulite, improving vision, increasing bone density, accelerate wound healing, bla bla bla let me skip a few, GROW NEW HAIR AND RESTORE COLOR. I started a thread about HGH a while back; I was just trying to get some testimonials, and everyone here was against it. I'm working out and I'm going to take it. Everybody that I know that has taken it has really loved it. You may not be interested in that considering that you don't want to over supplement, but I thought I'd throw that in.
sounnds interesting and while i am an optimist and sure, a dreamer ...i still am a bit of a realist who follows the old 'if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.' i definitely am wary of over-supplementing and more 'unknown' things. quite honestly i've never heard of HGH...so while what you say sounds good, i most definitely would have to know a LOT more. more than likely tho, you're right, i'd skip it. don't like to do too much. appreciate the info tho and may read up on it. thanks for the B5 recommendation. that i might more readily give it a shot. if it actually helps reduce my grey hair...yay!

oh how quickly minds change.
a while back i had a poll about striahgt/curly hair....getting ideas, opinions...and you told me straight hair was kinda boring. perhaps you were trying to make me feel good about my curls? i loved my curls in any case...but change is good! and fun!
and yes, if you truly prefer your hair straight, i'd definitely look into the japanese straightening. i NEVER blow dry. i never did curly either, but if wanted anything besides curls, i would have to. now....just straight, easy!

Take care,

can't really see the highlights too much in the pic, but they are there and a lot more visible from the front.
