i know we have a 'beauty' thread, but it's sooo long at this point, and besides, i want one specific to hair alone. so share your thoughts, tips, etc.
so yes...i caved and went and dyed my hair for hubby. he LOVEs it, which in turn makes me love it. seriously, i do really like it i just don't relish the upkeep. it IS really nice....my natural dark brown with red highlights. however, i would not want to spend that kinda $$$ regularly - so does anyone do highlights at home? any product recommendations, tips, etc? i took a quick look in the store, saw highlighting kits for blondes...but nothing dark, do they not exist?
also got a haircut and man....he took off 5-6 inches! i wanted off maybe 2. hahaha. it looks good, but yea......at least a year, 1.5 years worth of growth, gone. still long, but man...it's not loooooonnnnggg anymore. c'est la vie, eh?
as to *tips* that i can share:
i do NOT blow dry my hair at home....ever. i always let it airdry, i think it keeps it a LOT healthier. i always use a wide-tooth comb or pick for my hair to untangle, and i always comb thru my conditioner in the shower. i also don't wash my hair daily, i find it too drying. sure, it gets wet daily, but only actually shampooed/conditioned a couple times a week. also, for my dark hair i LOVE john frieda's 'brilliant brunette' porducts, makes my hair uber shiny! also like a few of his finishing products.

My hair is naturally curly...but I like wearing it straight...so I pretty much dry it every day...except if it's really hot - then I'll air dry it. A friend recommended the Infiniti hair dryer - and I love it! It gets my hair really straight and smooth. I don't even use a straightening iron anymore. http://www.target.com/Infiniti-Hair-Designer-Straightener-Attachment/dp/B000JUZGD2/sr=1-5/qid=1213117386/ref=sr_1_5/601-2520629-2793748?ie=UTF8&index=target&field-original-keywords=conair%20infinity&rh=k%3Aconair%20infiniti&page=1
My hair also gets frizzy really easily...I've only found 2 products that keep it smooth - frederic fekkai glossing cream (which costs an arm and a leg) and biosilk (more affordable - but will make your hair greasy if you use too much).
first off, props for the way you take care of your hair! it doesn't need to be washed daily, about 3 times a week (or every other day) will generally do, unless you have unusual circumstances. i do like john frieda's products, for a non-professional (not sold in general salons) product line, he does pretty damn well. stay away from things such as suave, V05, store brands, etc. also, if you are in a rush and cannot let your hair air dry and decide to use a hair drying or any sort of eat, ALWAYS protect it using some sort of spray on protector. CHI has some great products to deal with heat. same thing if you're in the sun, especially because you just got highlights...use a protectant. Paul Mitchell sells a sun block for your hair, white and orange bottle, should be found where you find his color care line (same color bottles).
as far as general care for highlighted hair, since your highlights are red, you'll want want to use a color care shampoo. as far as shampoo and conditioner, you can find anything that mentions color safe, color care, etc. i know you like john frieda, so that'll be fine. also, joico, alterna, matrix, and bumble and bumble have great color safe shampoos. another upside to not shampooing everyday is that your color will last a bit longer, since you're not ravaging it and tempting it on a daily basis. i'll warn you though, red fades more quickly than any other color. i'm glad you like it though, because at the same time, it's a bummer to remove if you need to.
getting your hair done is quite expensive, and these days i'm sure people are not wanting to spend extra dough to get it done. so, as far as at home highlighting products, be VERY careful. what the box says is not always the way to go. if i were you, i'd find a friend who is a stylist if you can and ask her to aid you with getting your own materials, or better yet, see if she can do it out of the salon for you, that way you will still have professional work, but at a cheaper price. to be honest with you, a tube of hair color is about $6 at cost, that's right...so the price you pay in a salon is a HUGE upcharge. you basically pay for the persons time and the tiny bit of product that gets used in your hair. so, i'm sure a friend would do it for you for a great price if you can find somebody.
other than that, some tips...i'm not sure if you part your hair, but as your roots start to grow out, play around with your part, do something funky and it'll hide the line made by the new growth. also, i'm not sure if you got your entire head done with the red highlights, but if so, you can still go to the salon to get it done cheaper by doing only a partial foil (part of the head, usually the top and a sides) for a fraction of the price. depending on your cut, people may not even see the back of your hair, so a full foil isn't always necessary.
since you just got this all done, you've got some time to think about it. generally people who get their hair done frequently do it every 6-8 weeks for highlights, more frequently for full head colors. those who do both will switch off and get highlights one month, regrowth done next month, highlights the month after and so on. so, you've got a decent amount of time to figure out what you want to do.
anywho, that was long, haha sorry for being so wordy! i hope i helped in some way, if not, feel free to keep asking away!
My hair naturally dark and I tried the home highlighting kits....Horrible! Don't do it, it never turns out the right colour and it never looks 'natural' if you know what I mean... You'll end up spending a fortune at the salon to get it corrected.
I love my long hair, but its a pain the summer and spends most of the time tied up... I'm quite vain about it and I love wearing it down, but it just gets in the way of anything I'm trying to do.

WOW!
awesome post!
i appreciate you taking the time to write it all..and i read it all....and chock full of great tips! so thanks! i do know red fades fast, although i've been told i have very porous hair, and my hair tends to 'hold onto' just about anything, including color. i know in the past even wash out colors, never really wash out of my hair. haha.
i do have a friend who is a stylist, but she is not a close friend. my husband even mentioned it as well. i actually went to her for cuts for a while in the salon, but then i found my nail salon now has a hairstylist - husband and wife new owners - and i actually like his technique, and prices, better. i always felt a bit 'weird' going to her before anyway, i wouldn't want her to think i am looking for a deal. her hubby is in my hubby's band, so yea....we see each other often for gigs, but not 'close' friends ya know? however, i may just ask her about pricing, products, etc...see if she offers? can't hurt. i didn't even thnk of buying sunblock, good idea! i do try to keep all of me out of the sun, i do wear hats often, etc...but not to/from work...which is a lot of walking train to office, so i will definitely look into it!
comebackgirl...i hear ya on the curly hair! i like my hair straight too, but i would only get it ironed when i'd go for a cut, i cannot be bothered with high mantainence hair at home. for curly, i still like john frieda products, both the frizz ease and brilliant brunette series...NOT the serum, way too greasy! his mousse is great - curly or straight - and has a few smoothing products, pomade-types......work really well, no real build-up....great shine!

ahhhhhh...that sucks!
i was hoping that maybe there were decent ones, and i could perhaps convince my sister to do a 'color night' say every 2 months. i'd do her hair, she mine.....b/c it's always better to have someone else. this is also why i soooo held off on coloring my hair, b/c of the expensive upkeep! i REALLY like the highlights....sooooo nice! well, hubby wanted me to and actually just earlier on the phone was going on and on how much he LOVEs my new 'do....the color....and how young/sexy i look ....so yea, if he likes it taht much, if i need to spend the $$$ to keep it up, guess it'll be worth it.
i LOVE wearing my hair up! i love wearing it down too, but i love up-dos! i used to wear my hair up quite often with hairsticks, loved em. right now i am not pleased with the missing length and don't think the sticks look too good right now, bummer....but when it grows back, definitely use em often. looks like a very 'fussy' style, and yet, twist hair, insert the stick...done! i am also getting back into ponytails, never used em much, and i now see....again...hubby loves em. all good....hahaha.
btw - this:
fantastic tip, thanks!
since i am covering grey, i am getting my whole head colored + highlights, and wondering how that would all work. haha. i've played around with haircolor often enough when i was younger, but this is the first time i've ever gotten highlights. i really, really like the highlights.

Where I'm not ugly and you're lookin' at me
I've shared the story of my hair numerous times.. and I don't think I've got any new tips.. just the same old - rinsing with cold water!! warm water sort of "opens up" your hair and cold water "closes" them so they don't stretch out so much/easily when you brush or comb them.
also, the cold water is really refreshing, gets the blood circulation in your scalp really going.
other than that.. well.. I really love my hair. one of the reasons is that I don't even have to think about highlights and stuff, me hair pretty much does that without asking.
I use Garnier Color Breaks.
It's really easy...
Not that you can really tell that my hair has "highlights" but for me...that's the point. I want it to look natural so i go easy with them.
I love the KMS curl enhancing line. It's amazing. I usually make a cocktail of products in my hand and scrunch through then let it air dry.
The past few months, i was seeing a few greys so i decided to colour (from a box) my already corase, curly hair. I ended up with hair that has the texture of a bail of hay. I bought Cynthia Sylvia Stout shampoo from Lush and although it STINKS like beer, it worked well.
I need my hair cut badly but i don't have a stylist and i've had more than my share of traumatizing trips to the salon. I can't wait to go back to my hometown in the fall and get a GOOD, relaxing haircut for a change.

Come is a verb"
We need pics though.
the other day, i noticed that we have 13 bottles of hair products in our shower. i'm really afraid to count the hair sprays, gels, amplifiers, smoothing creams, curl boosters, pomades, etc. i have a salon account, so it's just too easy to buy product.
ridiculous? probably -- but i love my hair.
just wait....you won't. hahaha.
all i will say is hubby LOVES it. i mean *LOVE*...who knew? change is good.
excellent!
glad to read that. i AM pretty experiemental/game for most anything...and hey, i did study art....hahaha...so how hard can it be? good to know!
hmmm...may have to invite you over for a 'girly night'....get some tips/pointers/assistance. i've never participated in a girly night .....but yea, whatever....dye/highlight my hair and we can drink. that always works! my hair looks definitely highlighted but it's not garish or anything. i could actually go for a bit more 'bold' perhaps...but whatever. if i could actually get similar results on my own, or with assistance , at home...i'd totally do it myself always. we shall see as the need arises.

beautiful haircut!
my husband wants me to get a bob. i've had one, maybe 2, in the past....had uber short/spiky hair....and crazy long up to two weeks ago anyway :(...and everything in between. i do look good in a bob, but i am just not ready to part with my length just yet. soon enough i am sure i will but for right now, i want to keep it. yes, i have one of those rare men who actually is pushing for me to cut off all my long hair. altho right now with the new do and color, he loves it again. he laways loved my hair and loved how much i changed it up. i guess i had been growing it for so long now - 7 years? - that not much *change* had been occuring.
wolfy...after the tour! sure to have lots of pics, i may even get in 1 or 2 ...so i will be sure to share, privately. however, i don't know how well the highlights may or may not show up. eh well.

i'm happy that i could help you! alternating your highlights will save you some money as well!
and about your friend, good idea to pick her brain a bit first and see where it goes. a lot of people will ask me questions and if i'm comfortable doing their hair out of work, i'll offer, if i'm not feeling it, i just let it go...no one wants the awkward feeling of having to sit outside of work in someone's own house feeling funny.
I have plenty!

well now i also have some hope of trying it at home...so we shall see. either way, i appreciate ALL the tips! and yes, let's totally keep it going. let's face it, hair is a big *thing*....and i love hearing what people do, products they try, etc...
collin, you have beautiful hair!
and now sadly, yours is definitely longer than mine......:p

Heh - when my daughter and I went to Lolla last year, between us we brought 2 hair sprays, 2 flat irons, a hair dryer, CHI polishing spray, Silk serum, and my Lush Trichomania shampoo, Jungle conditioner, and her shampoo conditioner. My hair is a chin length bob, undercut, black colored, no bangs. I just bought a CHI straightener yesterday and it is awesome. I usually wash my hair 2-3x per week - its on the dry side (what a surprise), and tease it up a bit with product in between washes. Hair is a serious thing!

I wash EVERY day. If I go camping, even backpacking in cold weather, I will find a way to wash my hair. If I don't wash my hair daily I get very, very cranky.
I even add some baking soda to my shampoo at least once a month, so my hair is (literally) squeaky clean.
I also blow dry my hair any time I wear it down.
Yet, my hair is not dry and does not have many split ends. However, it is not as shiny as I'd like.
Does anybody know of any good vegan hair serum?

if you have a whole foods market around you, you should be able to find something there...depends on how big the market is though, some have really elaborate hygiene/health sections, some have so/so sections.
Thanks, we have a relatively new one in downtown Seattle. I'll peruse their shelves a little more closely on my next trip.

i think it depends entirely on your hair. seems a few have posted have similar hair...curly and thick. both these attributes can easily lead to dryness if not cared for properly. now my husband, he has very fine blonde hair and if he doesn't was his hair every day, it looks greasy! funny too, b/c to look at his hair - clean of course - you'd never guess that at all. he does not have greasy or very shiny hair, just normal. so yea....really depends on your hair.
as for shiny, they do have lots of products that hlp promote, or fake , healthy shine. dunno if they are vegan or not though.

So because I have this dilemna with the growing out the colour, I think I want to just dye my hair as close to my natural colour as possible and I'm not really wanting to spend up large at the hairdressers to do it.
Has anyone coloured their hair at home OVER blonde highlights and how successful was it and what color/dye did you use? Figured I should ask and see what my options are before I go back to the salon. I'm worried that just putting a dark colour over the top of the blonde will make the blonde pink or red or heaven forbid some other hideous colour.

Me me me!
I currently dye my own hair (light blonde) but its been all colors from dark dark brown to red, to blonde and back and forth. Salon and me doing it. A dark color will take over the blonde. It will be more vibrant than putting it on a darker section. If you go say, red, the blonde parts you covered will be brighter red, go brown and the brown will be lighter and brighter.. etc..
I always use L'oreal. Its in a silver box here in America. I have no idea if you have it, or what you may have. I refuse to pay a salon every 3 weeks to touch up color! I pay 7.99 and have really pretty hair! Take it from me, you can do anything with your hair.
BUT.... PLEASE REMEMBER. When going dark, ALWAYS pick a warm tone, or you will end up ashy and greenish. Nothing looks worse over blonde then a cool brown. You'll be like brownish seaweed!
Thanks S.
I'm going to try to see if I can find something close to my own hair color, I'm not so worried about the ashy greenish look, on account it might even out my reddish cheeks. See?
We do have Loreal, I might get some and put a little on what's left of the blonde in a few spots and see what that does before I commit to doing my whole head. The old spot test.
I used to color my hair blonde at home years ago, but I guess I got stuck in the salon thing while I was working and to be honest I find the whole idea of colouring my hair pretty tiresome now. I'd love to be able to just leave it to let the colour grow out but I don't want a bunch of photos of me all over the US and Canada with regrowth hair!
