There was a fabo documentary on SBS here in Australia last night about it - very informative.

They did say that the black holes within the tube thing would be proportionately compared to black holes in their own environment (which are lost out there somewhere) and the VAST majority interviewed said it was only sceptics that had any concern.

Sorry I was drunk when watching so thats sorta 80% of what they said

Looks like we're safe, at least for a little while longer.

Successful test for Europe's Big Bang collider

GENEVA – The world's biggest physics experiment has succeeded in its first major test as a beam of protons was successfully fired all the way around a 17-mile tunnel beneath the Swiss-French border.

The protons traveled the full length Wednesday of the $3.8 billion Large Hadron Collider that scientists hope is the next great step to understand the makeup of the universe. There were a series of trial runs.
  • I cannot believe that i'm up this late!

i got off work a couple hours ago, totally stressed about work, thinking fuck, i'll just have a couple glasses of wine, then go to bed. then i start reading about this shit. how could we all have not heard about this sooner? this huge experiment being built for 20 years and no one has been talking about it til the day before it gets turned on?? or maybe i just don't read the science journals....

i can't believe the shit they're going to be finding out. finally being able to prove the higgs boson theory? holy balls! matter and anti matter?? the totally wierd concept of dark matter and dark energy (which always sounded to me like a star trek or x-files episode). other dimensions? shit! this is amazing! i can't wait to see what they find out!
    okay, going to bed now...

having read up on the experiment a bit yesterday i am in no way scared of this at all.. in fact i'm slightly excited by it... finding out how the universe formed? what can be more exciting than that? well other than watching Britney Spears fuck a midget?... NOTHING!! science rules!

well, we ain't out of the woods yet... apparently they don't start actually collding particles for another 3-4 days depending on how the tests go... :D

great quotes from men in white coats in the Metro today. First, a mad scientist ;)
"Nothing will happen for at least four years. Then someone will spot a light ray coming out of the Indian Ocean," said German chemist Otto Rossler. "The weather will change completely, wiping out life. There will be a Biblical Armageddon."

Which is succinctly rebutted (by an angry scientist...)
Others seem unfazed about the possible end of life on Earth. Professor Brian Cox, who works on the project, said: "Anyone who thinks the LHC will destroy the world is a twat."

    :D
Oh yeah? Well, I've had about enough of morons and halfwits, dolts, dunces, dullards and dumbbells - and you chowderhead yokel, you blithering hayseed, you - you've had enough of me?

They were saying on the news this morning that if they inadvertantly created a blackhole today it would take 50 years to finish us off.
