Is it necessary for people to continue to try and play God????? There is really no need for their little experiment.

Play god? Exactly the opposite. It is called science. I'm looking forward to reading about their discoveries regarding matter and energy. There could be some interesting findings, or it could be a giant money pit.

Yes I said play God and and the little experiment isn't necessary. Yeah it might be interesting but then what? Why don't the scientist put their time to good use?

They are - they're pretty much recreating the big bang for Christ's sakes! If that isn't a good use, then I don't know what is. Plus, what God? I don't believe in magic.

Shouldn't BIG, IMPORTANT news like this be in the Moving Train forum?

We could use some of the opinions over there!!! ;)

They aren't just doing a little experiment. They will be using this for many, many experiments for many, many years that have all sorts of implications. I'm sure you would have been pissed at Galileo or Davinci for playing god and going against the church had you lived back then. But thankfully they went against the religionists and made many important discoveries. There are still discoveries to be made. Why would you be opposed to better understanding the world we live in?

Sorry I guess we have a difference of opinion. I agree that it will be interesting but I still think its pointless.

As I said before, they are hoping to be able to come up with a cure for cancer and a solution to global warming - are those not worthy causes?!
  • I'm trying not to get too excited by this because I know nothing will happen. It'll all be so boring and everything will be business as usual. Yawn.

Still, the scientists did say that one of the things they hoped to get out of it was the creation of time travel - that'll be cool I guess.

My son thinks he has figured out time travel... I have a recording of it sounds fairly possible ...still need the bugs worked out of though... I told him astral travel makes life easier than science....

Kilgore Trout and Billy Pilgrim are the only people to have ever figured out time travel.

well, if increasing our knowledge of how the Universe works is pointless then you're right...
Oh yeah? Well, I've had about enough of morons and halfwits, dolts, dunces, dullards and dumbbells - and you chowderhead yokel, you blithering hayseed, you - you've had enough of me?

  • This is really thrilling, one of the greatest human accomplishments.

If the LHC did make a stable black hole it would be much much smaller than an atom (sub-atomic) then gravity would pull it down to the center of the earth. It would take millions of years before earth would be engulfed as the black hole would have to increase in mass at random intervals hoping to bounce into particle after particle. These particles are oceans apart.
Humans would never know...one moment when it reaches that critical mass poof!

If successful this will turn a corner in science, hold on to your butts.

On Wednesday the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) will send out a full particle beam, in preparation for an experiment that will re-create conditions just after the Big Bang.

The LHC will smash two beams of particles head-on at super-fast speeds. Scientists from Cern - the European organisation for nuclear research - hope to see new particles in the debris of these collisions.

There have been concerns that the experiment could open black holes that would swell in size and swallow up the Earth, but physicists stress that the planet is not under threat.

    :p
  • Scientist debunked the whole end of the world scenario by explaining that this reaction happens all the time in our upper atmosphere when space particles clash with earth at much greater speeds than they are experimenting with. They are doing it down here only to take readings from a controled test.
