youve got that wrong helen. one has to have only attended a funeral in order to answer the query about what to wear to one. dead people have no opinion nor do they care what they wear in the coffin. :)

    fuckin knowitall bitch :p

What if I'm a funeral fashion expert but had never attended a funeral? :D

Besides, I'm definitely not one to give advice... I like to wear bright colours at funerals. Black is only needed if people aren't actually glum about the funeral. A funeral should be a celebration of the life so I want mine to be colourful :)

I don't. I don't advise anyone what to wear. I've made my own decision on the appropriate attire for a funeral... doesn't make it right :)

A whole lot of black and white talk going on in this thread. Shades of gray folks, shades of gray. You can indeed get expert advice on the raising and spanking of children from someone who does not have kids of their own, just like you can get horrible advise on the raising and spanking of children from people with 10 kids. I don't put a lot of stock in the parenting advice of a lot of the trailer trash I see and sadly, am related to.

Now, what you deem to be good advice as an individual is going to vary widely from one person to the next. You can also raise two kids the exact same way (say, no spanking in this scenario) and have one of them turn out to be a peach and the other a monster.

    Shades of gray...

i agree... but when the thread is entitled "parents, how would you deal with this" or "any divorcees out there? i need advice" then the person is wanting the advice of those specific people.

if i start a thread "Drivers: automatic or manual" then i dont care if some snotty 15 year old posts on it saying "my dad says auto is the best" ... but i'll take the advice of a driver before that of a non-driver.

again... not saying non-parents cant give advice on spanking... but i'd rather listen to a parent's experience of spanking or non-spanking. how did they feel AFTER they hit the kid... did it work.. would they do it again... etc

now i have to go as somebody has started a "periods.. advice please" thread and i'm the fucking master of all things vaginal. ;)

Pearls of wisdom can appear in unlikely places, sometimes from the source you would least expect. I'd say rather than eliminating a perspective outright because it doesn't fit a particular demographic, hear what they have to say and then use what you like and discard the rest and/or insult their intelligence while you're at it.

As Jeanie said in the 'why?' thread... some of the best advice she got was from people who knew nothing about what she was going through. I'm with you 100% eyedclaar and I've never really understood this kinda argument.

anyhoo, i agree....those ALL are very lazy ways of debating, b/c they are NOT debating points. knowledge comes in MANY forms, and experience is only one amongst them. while i DO think it's valid at times to stress first-hand experience over merely observational/academic knowledge......it still in NO way means that one's opinion is not valid on a topic.

unless of course someone asks "who has tasted a blueberry" and 20 people who have NEVER tasted a blueberry post away, going on and on what they THINK it may taste like. ;)

Just a few I've picked up on in the past couple of days:

'Your opinion is null cos you've never experienced it.'

'You said something bad about America, therefore you hate America and take every opportunity to bash it... I mean why else would you say something bad'

EVERYBODY'S opinions are valid... and sometimes an outsider can tell you more about a situation than somebody who's in it so don't knock it :)

Anyway, I know there's a few more... and it'll come back to me I'm sure. Any more? :D

one that i have seen more than a few times...something along the lines of:

"you're either a troll or you just have no idea what you are talking about because of your lack of posts"

and btw, i will give my opinion on any matter i want to...as long as someone asks me for my opinion on sais matter...and i mean personally asks me...it's not often that i have been involved in such matters on a message board where i don't know the person asking for advice.

hmmmm the rape crisis one is a good point... probably very highly trained, probably offering emotional support rather than a direct knowledge of the rape itself.

put it this way... i'd rather have advice from an ex-junkie about coming off drugs... i'd rather take the advice of an ex-alcoholic about quitting booze...

rape, death, cancer, etc... horrific things that require specialist support.. not like the 'advice' given on here which is kinda like asking Stephen Hawking for dancing tips...

i remember a thread about a weird heart thing i had a few years back.. i had tons of advice but the one that i took and the one that jumped out at me was a guy called DocChicago... he knew what he was talking about... the others just offered supportive advice... he offered knowledge.

if i want advice about literature.. i'd ask Finsy... i wouldn't ask Irish Al as he only reads scud mags :D

    wow....dunk and i agree on occasion. ;)
    exactly.
sure...there are *experts* out there with a fantastic wealth of knowledge on certain topics....there are people who can sympathise, be supportive...offer insight/advice....but sometimes...you just want to hear from someone who's *been there* as well. not saying it's 'better'.....just different.

    nothing.
it just means i know. :)

ummmm...my favorite form of 'lazy debate' is people who simply completely disregard posts as if they are not even there, rather than address what the post points out....and/or when one selectively picks and chooses JUSt what to address in a post, and leaves out the pertinent parts of the debate. b/c yea...that really furthers the conversation.
