obviously i don't know the exact figure since i've never planned one, but i was hanging out with one of my friends who just got engaged and he was telling me about his planned wedding for next year and the ballpark figure of everything was in the neighborhood of 100,000.

I guess it's fine if you have the money for it, but I had no idea these things can cost that much. shows you my ignorance on the topic.

  • Some can. Myself I think that money could be better spent. I feel so many people place the emphasis on the wedding than the actual commitment to someone else for LIFE. Myself if I do get married it will be a small do.

i think the ammount of $ spent on weddings is crazy - i-can-do-it-bigger-and-better-than-you in the extreme
it would be far better spent on a house or suchlike

if i ever did get married it would be a bikini and boardies and prawns on the bbq at the beach affair
    impatience is a gift ........

    Same here. :)

I couldn't live with myself if I spent that much money on all that hoopla just for one day. And it's not my thing anyway.
Small and intimate and lets get on with the marriage thanks. :)
    NOPE!!!

  • Mine certainly didn't cost that much, but some do. The average is around $25,000 these days. People take out loans to pay for them, even! I can't even imagine taking out a loan for a party.

My wedding cost almost nothing. :)
  • Weddings are what you make them. I got married in a teeny tiny ceremony in the Valley of Fire State Park in Nevada, and spend the week vacationing in Vegas. It cost next to nothing in the scheme of weddings. I would NEVER pay tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars on one day. But some people do. I just could justify using that money in a million other ways.
  • i'd spend that in a million other ways too. I was just taken aback or stunned that it was even that costly.

Seems once you mention the word wedding to a lot of places they add a premium to the price tag anyway.

I've been to a couple of weddings that felt like the only reason they were getting married was to have a big wedding. Its kinda sad. The best weddings always seem to be the small ones.

I have seen so many girls get soooo much more excited about planning their weddings than marrying their husband. It really is sad.

I was actually engaged briefly to my college bf, and I can honestly admit that I was more excited about the wedding than I was the prospect of becoming his wife. *shivers at the thought* Luckily, I realized that before it was too late and called it off! :D

Thank god you called it off. I have a few friends I really wish would have came to their senses. You can tell their not happy at all.

The most fun I had a wedding was my friend's in Vegas. It was small so I got to interact with everyone there and it didn't go on and on.

depends on the wedding. The best weddings I've been to were simple, and allowed for the bride and groom to spend all their time with friends and family, dancing, eating, socializing, introducing, etc... You can do this with an expensive wedding also, but I think in the end it's what is most important. I say save the money for a house, children.

who is this person and let me do their wedding flowers..... shit...
  • My housemates are getting married in November and it's costing them a small fortune. I'm seeing all the plans from flowers, to venue, to even single glasses of wine... shockingly expensive... Dress alone? £1,800...

PERSONALLY, I think weddings are what you make them. Spend £100 or spend £10,000 as long as it's special to the two people getting married it shouldn't matter :)

they're a lot more expensive than I thought. We're getting married in a couple of weeks and I had an idea of how much I'd like to spend but thats been well blown out of the water....you just have to say the word wedding and people triple the price...but its worth it...I'm sure :D

Actually thats a really good point...right the weddings off.....*heads off to EB to find a EMEK*

  • They CAN be expensive, that's for sure!

But when the focus goes from the person who you are marrying to the event, there is a problem IMO.

I definately spent more time planning my day around having fun and making sure we enjoyed every bit - as opposed to being the perfect-out-of-a-magazine hosts. And it was very reasonable while being beautiful. And we had a blast! (Got absolutely trashed to boot!)

Big or small, expensive or thrifty - it's about the commitment.

I used to be a Director of Food and Beverage. I sold a lot of weddings. There are ways to do it in a less expensive way.

Even simple, small weddings cost quite a bit. By the time you reserve space, buy a dress, flowers and some invitations, you've already spent quite a bit.
The only people we should try to get even with...
    ...are those who've helped us.

Right 'round the corner could be bigger than ourselves.
  • No reason to pm. Are you even getting married?
Anyway, Most places have menus for Weddings and for Banquets. Request both so you can compair them. The difference is that the Banquet menus do not have the open bar, hordourves or the champagne toast included in them. This way you can breakdown the costs and see what you really need or not.
If you wedding is four hours, and you want open bar the entire time, you only need it for three hours. Cocktail hour, then close it for a half hour while everyone is seated and they introduce the wedding party. Then open it for the rest of the night with the exception of the last half hour so people are not swigging one down right before they get ino a car.
You can also save money buy ordering Vegetable and Cheese trays around the room instead of having butlered hordourves. You also do not need dessert since you have a wedding cake. Some places offer one included in their packages but you can find places that can do it for little cost but you gotta search around. I think the average cost is around $4.00 per person for a Wedding Cake.

Hope this helps you or anyone else getting married.
Anyone can pm me with questions if they are getting married.

    They can be.
It really is silly what vendors will charge when it is for a wedding. It is a big game to them.
I do bridal makeup but I would never, ever take advantage of a bride's situation. I have also done a few gratis because they were not in the financial position, but really liked my work.
But don't go passing that around. :o

100K seems ridiculously extravagent, unless you have been talking with jeter or some other big player. :p

Agreed, you can have a nice wedding for 10K easy.I have even seen them for 5 to 8k and they are still nice.

My suggestion, go to vegas or somewhere nice, just the two of you or with friends and family.

  • yes it's becoming more and more common to spend about $100,000. I've been to really really simple, small, cheap weddings and even those cost around $20,000.
