    For Jeanie!

    apples and pears = stairs
all gone a bit pete tong = all gone wrong (or for none rhyming slang it's all gone pear shaped)
    me old china = mate/friend
going out for a ruby = ruby murray = going out for a curry

    More

    Trouble and strife = wife
Barnet = barnet fair = hair
    Syrup = Syrup 'o figs = wigs
Can you adam n' eve it = believe it
Butchers = butchers hook = look (havin a butchers = to look at something)
Whistle = whistle and flute = suit
So are we strangers now? Like rock and roll and the radio?

I see I'm gonna have to learn a fair bit of lingo when I start working amongst the people there...

Isn't "apples and pears" actually "up the stairs"? That's how my British sister-in-law explained it, anyway... They use several in the "English English" section of the third Austen Powers movie, with Michael Caine. :)

dunno. I guess either is fine. :)

Tim Tam slam means you got Milo too right? :D

I freakin' LOVE Milo! Why the hell don't they sell it in the U.S.....they have it at some places (VERY few) but it's hard to find! Everybody else in the world has it though!....but I'm not bitter or anything :(

i don't know if i can, but i'm going to look into it. the only Milo i can find in my area is in a can (like a cola).....it tastes like Aluminum . no wonder it doesn't sell that well 'cause that's all we've got. i'd rather find the powder in the tin so i can make it hot or cold....or sprinkle on ice cream! :p

OMG, I friggin LOVE this thread! I've got this big stupid smile on my face... more rhyming slang...

    Barney Rubble (barney) - trouble

I bought some Milo in Canada but it was from the Caribbean and it didn't taste as good... I'm sure you can find it somewhere :)

    There's another cultural conundrum...

    AluminIum becomes aluminum in NA

I'm laughing everytime you guys write "weird", my friends over here all laugh at me when I say weird, cause I pronounce it "weyud" cause we don't have a hard "R"... they've ruined that word for me, it's now become one of those ongoing jokes :)

Some much good stuff here guys, keep in coming :D

BTW, thanks Kristophed for the whole "how's it goin", "how you going" thing, I've been away a while and you start to get confused and forget which one you used to use... ;)

:D I'd completely forgotten barney was rhyming slang.

It's a word I use often instead of arguing/an argument. "You don't want to go in there they're having a barney" :o:p

LOL, it's funny how it just bleeds into the language and you forget where it came from... and I love using the word "barney" for argument ;)

Not sure if this one's been brought up....too tired to read the whole thread right now :o

My kids crack up, or get shocked (depending on how it's used), when the word "fanny" is used on American TV shows.

eg; "Yeah I just walked straight up to her and grabbed her on the fanny"

    Fanny:

    USA = bottom
Australia = ummm....front bottom (females genitals)

    :D

After school it was always arvo tea time. :D

Haha when I lived in Ireland, my housemate asked if I wanted to have my tea now. I told her no thanks, I already drank some earlier. She explained that it could be used to mean dinner/evening meal. :o Who would've guessed?

We call em eggplants here, have all my life. It wasn't till I got into my 20s that I noticed people start calling them aubergines.

It's always been eggplant and zucchini here in my world. :)

Oh but, peppers are called capsicum. :D

Yeah, we call 'em eggplant and zucchini in Oz... not sure why the poms insist on using the French words (considering they don't like each other too much, lol :P)... oh, and peppers are most definitely capsicum :D

    Couple more:

    Entree becomes appetizer
    Main becomes entree
    Coriander becomes cilantro (bleurgh!)
    G-string becomes thong
Thongs become flipflops (as already mentioned but I would NEVER say "thong" over here... not as bad as saying "fanny", but I just never would)
    Arse becomes ass

    My kids crack up

Actually "crack up" is another, I believe... there are so many slang expressions we use that aren't used over here, some others are:

    heaps (as in "heaps good")
as (adding it to the end of things "cool as")
dag (this is one I still struggle to explain to people)
    drongo
    dead-beat
    ding-bat
dip-shit (this may be used here, not sure)
    fuck-wit
    wanker
    yonks
tosser (more English but I love it)
    twat (ditto)
    prat (ditto)
bludger (eg. "doll bludger", not just the balls used in Quidditch ;))
dobbed on (OMG, you're dobbed on!)
    dibber-dobber (carry on from above)
    Nigel/Nige/Nigel no mates

I can't think of many right now cause, I regret to inform you that, I've stopped using alot of slang. I go home and hear words and go: "OMG, I haven't heard that in YONKS!." :D

More rhyming slang for ya... Barry Crocker - shocker :D

A couple of choice Aussie expressions I love to tell people are (and apologies if I offend anyone, I'm really not trying to):

    - Dry as a dead dingo's donga!
    - (I'm so hungry) I could eat the arse out of a low-flying duck!
    - She bangs like a dunny door in a gale!
    - Dry as a nun's nasty!
